The Instituto Cervantes, the official Spanish Government Centre, is a public institution founded in 1991 to pro-mote Spanish language teaching and knowledge of the cultures of Spanish speaking countries throughout the world. It is the largest worldwide Spanish teaching organization and has 40 branches in five continents.

Pierre Gonnord es un fotógrafo autodidacta. Decidió residir en España a partir de 1988. A finales de 1998 inició un proyecto muy personal —definitorio de su trabajo— sobre rostros humanos con muy diversas series de imágenes.

Pierre Gonord is an self-educated photogra-pher. He decided to live in Spain from 1988 onwards. In late 1998 he began a very per-sonal project -defining his work- about hu-man faces with a several series of images.

MY FIRST STEPS (3 - 5 YEARS OLD)

Aimed at children, this workshop series will teach them to develop Spanish ways of expression. By means of several methods such as mime, intonation techni-ques and body language, children will learn to say their first words in Spanish.Participants will be able to enjoy these amusing sessions while stimulating their cognitive development. These workshops are based in learning through playing. The objectives are to blend body language and spoken language, and introduce the children to learning Spanish.Saturdays 10:00 to 11:30 am.

MiS PRIMEROS PASOS (3 - 5 AÑOS)

Taller dirigido a los más pequeños de la casa, en el que se les enseña a desarrollar formas de expresión en español. Me-diante herramientas como el mimo, técnicas de entonación y expresión corporal, los niños aprenderán a decir sus primeras palabras en este idioma.Los participantes podrán disfrutar de sesiones realmente divertidas en las que se estimulará su desarrollo cognitivo. Jugar y aprender serán las bases del taller. El objetivo es mez-clar el lenguaje y la expresión corporal e iniciar a los niños en el aprendizaje de la lengua española.Sábados de 10:00 a 11:30.

PASOS AVANZADOS (4 - 6 AÑOS)

Aprender y mejorar el español de forma divertida y amena es posible gracias a este taller. En “Pasos avanzados” los alumnos podrán ampliar sus conocimientos de la gra-mática, la expresión oral y la comprensión del idioma mediante juegos y recursos didácticos de lo más innovadores.Sábados de 11:30 a 13.00.

La Salsa es un baile que mezcla influencias africanas y euro-peas, a través de sonidos y danzas que conforman sus raíces. Normalmente se baila en parejas, pero también de forma indivi-dual o como Rueda de Casino.Este taller enseña desde los pasos básicos, ritmos, interpreta-ción de la música, hasta la forma de llevar o dejarse llevar.

Salsa dancing mixes African and European influences through the music and dance fusions that are the roots of Salsa. It is norma-lly a partner dance, although there are recognized solo forms as Rueda de Casino.These workshops aim to make one understand basic steps, pos-ture, timing and interpretation of music, partner dancing with leading/following freestyle.

El tango es un tipo de baile originado en Buenos Aires (Argen-tina) y Montevideo (Uruguay), que se expandió por el resto del mundo poco después de su aparición. Pocas danzas precisan de tanta complicidad y compenetración, de ahí que se diga que para bailarlo es necesario “escuchar el cuerpo” de la pareja.

Tango is a musical genre originated in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Montevideo (Uruguay), and spread to the rest of the world soon after that. Few dances require such a level of complicity and rapport as the Tango, from there it is said that in order to tango, you need to listen to your partner’s body.

The Edgar Allison Peers Symposium is dedidcated to Spanish contem-porary poetry and cultural production. Spanish poet Luis García Monte-ro will participate the Symposium. During the event, the documentary about the poet, Aunque tú no lo sepas, will be screened. Afterwards, a Q&A session will be hold with the director Charlie Arnaiz and the poet.

El Flamenco una forma de baile disciplinado, para el que no se necesita pareja. Aprender bien la técnica es esencial, a la par que divertido. Las sesiones en el Instituto Cervantes le permiti-rán familiarizarse con el baile y sus diferentes estilos, y le pro-veerá de un amplio conjunto de posibilidades para disfrutarlo y para expresarse a través de él. Cada sesión incluye una práctica de movimiento de brazo y el trabajo de los pies, una coreografía corta por cada baile (Palo), etc.

Flamenco is a disciplined dance form, usually performed without a partner. Learning good technique is essential, as well as fun. Instituto Cervantes’ sessions will allow you to become familiar with a dance form and style, and will provide an ample scope to enjoy and express yourself. Each session will include practising arm movement and footwork, short choreography for a dance form (Palo), etc.

Este proyecto pretende acercar la música a los alumnos de pri-maria y secundaria de Manchester a través de un taller práctico sobre flamenco. En este taller, el flamenco será usado como una puerta de acceso a la cultura y la lengua españolas con el fin de ampliar el horizonte de los alumnos en sus últimos años de es-cuela, y ayudarles a tomar decisiones sobre su futuro inmediato y a largo plazo.

This project will bring music performance to schoolchildren from Manchester through a hands-on workshop on Flamenco music. Flamenco will be used as a doorway to Spanish culture and language in order to broaden the horizon of pupils in their final years at school, helping them to make decisions about their immediate and long-term future.

El Instituto Cervantes de Manchester presenta un taller coral que aunará el aprendizaje de canciones corales con ejercicios de respi-ración, vocalización y afinación en sesiones muy prácticas. Guiados por un profesor, el coro tendrá la oportunidad de conocer algo más la cultura musical española y latinoamericana basándose en un re-pertorio muy variado, que incluye piezas populares y obras de auto-res como Falla, Lorca y Yupanqui.La combinación perfecta para aprender español y disfrutar formando parte de un coro. Las canciones se trabajarán a través de partituras, aunque no es imprescindible saber leerlas ya que también se traba-jará con archivos de audio.

Instituto Cervantes Manchester presents a choir workshop that will deepen into the learning of choir songs and breathing excercises, vocalizing and tuning in practical sessions. Guided by a teacher, the choir will have the opportunity to get to know a bit more about Spa-nish and Latinamerican musical culture based on a diverse repertoi-re that includes popular songs and works by authors like Falla, Lorca and Yupanqui. The perfect combination to learn Spanish and enjoy being part of a choir. The songs will be taught with sheet musics, although it’s not essential to know how to read them because they will be taught as well with audio archives.

Certamen de fotografía, organizado desde la Universidad de Huelva en colaboración con el resto de Universidades públicas andaluzas, a través del Proyecto Atalaya, y la Dirección General de Universidades de la Jun-ta de Andalucía, Contemporarte es un certamen de creación fotográfica contemporánea que nace en 2009 con el objetivo de promocionar a los artistas que componen la comunidad universitaria andaluza. A través de este proyecto, se plantea el propósito de impulsar los valores estéti-cos y creativos de dicha comunidad.

Photography contest organized from the University of Huelva and in collaboration with the rest of the public universities from Andalusia through The Atalaya Project and the Junta de Andalucía. Contemporarte is a contest of contemporary photographic creation, born in 2009 with the aim to promote the artists from the undergraduate comunity in An-dalusia. through this project, the intention is to inspire the aesthetic and creative values of this comunity.

¡VIVA! regresa en marzo 2017 con una gran variedad de eventos cinematográficos, musicales, teatrales y expositivos de la cultura española y Latino Americana.Esta vigésimo tercera edición cuenta con un programa que incluye más de 26 películas de países como Argentina (El Ciudadano ilustre, Chile (El Cristo ciego), Cuba (Santa y An-dres), Mexico (EL Comienzo del Tiempo) y España (Cien años de perdón). El Festival también incluirá, entre otras cosas, un apartado dedicado a las mujeres cineastas y otro al cine vasco.

¡VIVA! comes back in March 2017 with a wide variety of cine-matographic, musical, theatrical and expository events of Spa-nish and Latin American culture.This twenty-third edition counts with a programme that in-cludes more than 26 movies from countries like Argentina (El ciudadano ilustre), Chile (El Cristo ciego), Cuba (Santa y Andres), Mexico (El Comienzo del Tiempo), and Spain (Cien años de perdón). Rural Zombies is the name of the band that will be opening the VIVA Festival 2017. Originally from Gipuzkoa (Basque Country), the band has become one of the most popular of the Indie Rock Panorama in Spain. Their first album, Bat, was launched in 2015, and they have been getting better ever since.

El ácido hialurónico (HA) está involucrado en la salud y la funcio-nalidad normal de la piel, ligamentos y el sistema inmunológico, entre otras muchas. Sin embargo, este azúcar natural también ha servido para incorporarse a otros campos, como la investigación del cáncer. En esta charla, el investigador Julio Ríos de la Rosa hablará sobre el uso y composición del HA en terapias para el envío de medica-mentos anti-cancer, especialmente dirigidos a células malignas, a la vez que reducirá el daño del tejido sano.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is involved in the health and normal function of skin, joints, and the immune system, among many others. Howe-ver, this natural sugar has also found practical applications in other fields, such as cancer research. In this talk, researcher Julio Ríos de la Rosa will discuss about the use and design of HA-based therapies for the delivery of anti-can-cer drugs specifically into malignant cells, while minimising dama-ge to healthy tissue.

The collaboration between AIE and LIPA includes IC Manches-ter this year to bring El Twanguero, who will travel this May to the Liverpool Institute of Performing Acts and will play his songs along with a band of pupils from LIPA. Afterwards, they will play at IC Manchester and they will tour around Spain with four per-formances.

El régimen de Franco se llevó a 30,000 niños de los izquierdistas entre 1939-1953 y usó familias adoptivas o orfanatos Franquistas para volver en contra de los ideales de sus padres a los niños. Estas desaparicione se convirtieron en una empresa criminal: entre 1952 y 1990, doctores y enfermeras vendieron alrededor de 30,000 niños y los dieron en adopción.

The Franco regime took 30,000 children from leftists between 1939-1953 and used adoptive families or Fran-coist care homes to turn the youngsters against their parents’ ideas. These removals morphed into a criminal enterprise: between 1953-1990 doctors and nurses sold around 300,000 children into adoption.

El fútbol es una de las pasiones compartidas por britá-nicos y españoles. Va más allá de los estadios y se ha convertido en un fenómeno social, económico e incluso identitario en ambos países. El Instituto Cervantes de Mánchester organiza estas jornadas en las que compartiremos experiencias y dis-tintas perspectivas de este deporte. Para ello contamos con profesionales del fútbol del más alto nivel que nos hablarán de temas como el fútbol de alto rendimiento, fútbol base, la relación con los medios o el fútbol femenino.

Football is a passion shared by British and Spanish peo-ple. It goes beyond the stadiums and it has become a social, economic, and even identity phenomenon for both countries. Instituto Cervantes Manchester organises these confe-rences where experiences and different perspectives about this sport will be discussed. To do this, several football professionals at the highest level will talk us through issues such as professional football, grassroots football, the relationship with the me-dia or women’s football.

FOTCIENCIA 13 es una colección de 49 fotografías cientí-ficas expuestas actualmente en el Instituto Cervantes de Mánchester desde el 24 de mayo hasta el 20 de sep-tiembre y que sirve de escenario para la celebración de una serie de debates sobre arte, ciencia y sociedad.

Por muy independientes que las artes y las ciencias pue-dan considerarse, la intersección entre ambas genera un terreno fértil para que florezcan proyectos colaborati-vos y multidisciplinares que conectan especialmente con el público.

En este proceso, artistas y científicos piensan sobre sus disciplinas con otra perspectiva, a la vez que se explican conceptos científicos complejos al público de maneras simples, creativas y didácticas, representando así una formidable herramienta para la divulgación y la comuni-cación científica.

FOTCIENCIA 13 is a collection of 49 scientific-themed pictures that is exhibited in the Instituto Cervantes Manchester from 24th May to 20th September. The exhibition represents the perfect environment to host a cycle of debates around arts, sciences, and society.

However unrelated as arts and sciences may be considered, the intersection between both sets of disciplines generates such a fertile land where collabora-tive and multidisciplinary projects thrive and are able to outreach the general public.

In this creative process, where both artists and scientists get to think differently about their own disciplines, complex scientific concepts will be explained to the general public in creative and comprehensible ways, representing a great tool for science outreach and communication.

El Instituto Cervantes de Mánchester organiza por dé-cimo año consecutivo una jornada de intercambio de experiencias y materiales para profesores de español del Reino Unido e Irlanda.

Este décimo encuentro tendrá lugar el viernes 30 de Junio de 2017 y albergará dos sesiones plenarias -de-dicadas este año al efecto que el discurso del profesor puede tener en el aula y a la creatividad en el proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje de una segunda lengua-, y una selección de talleres prácticos de una duración de 50 minutos cada uno.

Ponentes: Lourdes Miquel: catedrática de español para extranjeros (ELE) en la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas “Barcelona Dras-sanes”.

Alan Maley: trabajó para el British Council en Yugoslavia, Ghana, Italia, Francia, India y China hasta 1988. Actual-mente se dedica a la formación de profesores y dirige en Oxford University Press la serie de libros Resource Books for Teachers.

Singing with people makes friendship bonds stronger, singing in harmony makes peace with oneself. That (and much more) is what the choir at ICM has to offer.

On Friday 21st of July do not miss the opportunity to get a grasp of what the ICM choir sounds like. Who knows? Perhaps you will want to join us next course and start singing yourself!

It is a free event, and everybody is welcome. No need to pay to enjoy a 6-song repertoire full of Spanish culture and touching melodies.

El miércoles 12 de julio te invitamos a la inauguración de Serie América, una exposición de grabados del artista chile-no Alejandro Guzmán. El acto, que se desarrollará en caste-llano, tendrá lugar a las 18:30 en el Instituto Cervantes de Mánchester y finalizará con un vino de honor.

Estos 20 grabados son una selección de la serie América, realizada entre los años 2012 y 2016.

Las temáticas de la obra nacen de la profunda admiración del artista por el arte primitivo y especialmente de las cul-turas precolombinas. También de los ensayos y del trabajo extremadamente experimental de Paul Klee y de Joan Miró, entre otros.

Durante tres años el artista ha explorado cuestiones concre-tas de soporte, percepción visual, color, luminosidad y com-posición. Las imágenes obedecen a la temática de la figura humana, especialmente el rostro.

En cuanto a la técnica, existe una aproximación a los experi-mentos de Stanley Hayter, sobre todo en el trabajo de terra-zas. Las 20 obras son aguatintas y aguafuertes, realizadas con matriz de cobre.

En el debate “¿Es una mayor cultura científica la solución para las crisis?” nos preguntaremos si un mayor pensamiento crítico y conocimiento científico en todas las esferas de la sociedad podría ser la solución para las crisis. ¿Cuál sería el papel de los científicos, ingenieros e investigadores? ¿Existen realmente las economías basadas en el conocimiento? ¿Qué países se benefician de ellas? ¿Cómo podrían las administraciones públicas, empresas privadas y comunidades académicas desarrollar enfoques másinnovadores? ¿Qué podemos aprender de las presentes y de las otras crisis a lo largo de la historia?

Fever Dream fue seleccionada para el premio internacional Man Booker 2017, y Granta ha calificado recientemente a Samanta como una de las mejores jóvenes escritoras de español por debajo de los 35. Originariamente de Buenos Aires, las tres colecciones de relatos de Samanta han ganado numerosos premios y han sido traducidos a 20 idiomas. En este evento Samanta responderá a preguntas y contará su experiencia como autora. Lo coordinará Mariana Casale O’Ryan.

Fever Dream was shortlisted for the 2017 Man Booker International Prize, and Granta recently championed Samanta as one of the best young Spanish-language writers under 35. Originally from Buenos Aires, Samanta’s three short story collections have won numerous awards and been translated into 20 languages. In this event, Samanta will answer questions and will tell us her experience as a writer. It will be hosted by Mariana Casale O’Ryan.

Instituto Cervantes y Mexicanas en Manchester organizan una velada especial para celebrar el Día de los Muertos. Reconoci-da Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, esta fiesta mexicana reúne a amigos y familiares alrededor de un altar, y rezan por los seres queridos que han muerto.

Instituto Cervantes and Mexicanas en Manchester organise a special evening so as to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Ack-nowleged Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, this Mexi-can holiday gathers friends and families around an altar, and they pray for the loved ones who have died.

“Un cuento en una Milla”, es una pequeña historia que habla de la vida y las personas a través de imágenes y palabras. El escenario es la Royal Mile de Edimburgo. Las fotos y el texto sugieren una sociedad en movimiento, producto de una larga tradición que de-termina de dónde venimos y quién somos. El proceso y la creación de estas imágenes me ha llevado a experimentar un aprendizaje y entendimiento de un lugar, una gente y un sistema que noconocía y en el que llevo viviendo ya más de seis años.

A Tale on the Mile, is a little story about our human life, told with images and words. The setting is the Royal Mile of Edinburgh. The pictures and text suggest a society in motion, one grown from a long heritage, this is a celebration of where we come from and who we are. While creating these images, I have been going through a pro-cess of getting a deeper understanding of the place, the people and the system in which I have been living for the past years.

El Into Film Festival es el evento de películas educacionales y gratis más grande del mundo. Dirigido a los jóvenes, se presentan alrededor de 140 películas en más de 600 centros alrededor de Reino Unido.

El objetivo es ayudar a los educadores a dar vida a la educación para los jo´venes entre 5 y 19 años con películas inspiradoras que te harán comprender la ppelícula de manera creativa.

The Into Film Festival is the world’s largest free film and edu-cation event for young people presenting 3,000 free cinema screenings, and showcasing over 140 films at more than 600 venues across the UK.
