INSTITUTION RESEARCHBy Megan Stephens
WE HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING A WIDE RANGE OF DIFFERENT PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES TO ESTABLISH A FINAL IDEA OF WHOM
WOULD PRODUCE AND DISTRIBUTE OUR SHORT FILM. IT IS VITAL THAT WE USE AN APPROPRIATE COMPANY THAT SUITS HOW WE AIM TO PRODUCE OUR
FILM IN RELATION TO THE DISTRIBUTION PROCESS.
PRODUCTION COMPANIESA production company provides the physical basis for works in the
realms of the performing arts, new media art, film, television, radio, and video. Production companies are often either owned or under contract
with a media conglomerate, film studio, entertainment company, or Motion Picture Company, who act as the production company's partner
or parent company.
DISTRIBUTION COMPANIESDistribution is the process of making a product or service available
for use or consumption by a consumer or business user, using direct means, or using indirect means.
DREAMWORKSDreamworks is an American Film Production Studio which
develops, produces and distributes films, video games and television programmes. It has produced more than ten box-offices of more than $100 Million each. DreamWorks began
in 1994 and was formed by Steven Spielberg, Jeffery Katzenberg and David Geffen. DreamWorks was part of the Viacom group, but it then became independent after two
years.
However, the Reliance ADA Group of India currently supports DreamWorks. Since then Katzenberg has removed
himself from the company and now runs his separate studio called DreamWorks Animation.
PARAMOUNT Paramount Pictures is a film studio, television
production company and motion picture distributor. It is a subsidiary of US media conglomerate Viacom. It
has distributed serveral successful films such as Transformers, Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones, Star
Trek and so on.
In 2014 Paramount earnt $3.7 billion in relation to their production and distribution process. Also in 2014,
Paramount Pictures became the first Hollywood studio to distribute it's films in digital,
COMCASTComcast Corporation is a US based multinational mass
media company and is the largest broadcasting and cable company in the world in terms of revenue. The
logo is since 2012 with the NBC peacock of when Comcast bought NBCUniversal. NBCUniversal is a the
worlds largest media and entertainment company who owns the production and distribution company,
Universal.
THE WALT DISNEY COMPANYThe Walt Disney Company is an American diversified mass
media and largest media conglomerate which is headquartered in Burbank, California. The Walt Disney
Company controls approximately 14.3% of the entire North American market and deals with the production and
distributing process.
Furthermore, It's parent division is called The Walt Disney Company. It is the world's second largest broadcasting and
cable company in terms of revenue after Comcast being first. The area served is worldwide which suggests the
success of it's films.
SONY PICTURESSony is the media conglomerate behind Sony Pictures Entertainment. It's major studio subsidiary is Columbia
Pictures. The company supports independent producers by having it's own arthouse division that’s called Sony Pictures
Classics.
Throughout it's years Sony has boosted profits in each of it's divisions. It's group sale in March 31, 2014 was reported to be
of $8 billion.
OUR CHOSEN INSTITUTIONAfter thorough research we have decided on a very suitable production and distribution company. We have chosen Paramount Pictures. Paramount is a subsidiary of Viacom as I have already mentioned. The company itself is known for the production of films such as
Titanic, Paranormal Activity, The Lovely Bones, Shrek and many more. They produce films of all types of genre which is very useful for the creation of our short feature. This should
ensure that by using paramount as our institution they would have the tools to metaphorically be produced to a high standard that follows the codes and conventions of our
genre.
Paramount boosted a revenue of $1.2 billion in the year 2011 not only proving they are financially stable but very popular in the sense of investing a lot of their finances in other
parts of their company. Paramount is a worldwide company that is known by many and not just American citizens which we continue to wish would help our short film receive it's full
potential.
