Introduction to the Respiratory System • Learning outcomes
– Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology to analysis of patient with a respiratory problem
– Recognise difference between symptoms and signs
– Identify aspects of simulators that facilitate learning anatomy and physiology for clinical practice
![Page 5: Institute of Health Skills and Education College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing University of Dundee Masters in Biomedical Engineering Masters in Design.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032607/56649ed95503460f94be8533/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Timetable
• Introduction to session 15 minutes• Observe a patient problem 5 minutes• Discuss in pairs 10 minutes • Divide into 4 groups and circulate around a series of
stations 20 minutes each – Simulated patient and applied anatomy – Assessing breathing – Sim Man – The use of Simulation for learning about respiratory conditions
• Round up session 10 minutes

Uses of Simulation
• Regulation i.e. Resuscitation training UG/PG/CPD• Risk reduction i.e. standard prescribing workshops UG/FY1 • Re-design i.e. Hospital @ Night• Rehearsal i.e. core technical and non technical skills SPI data collection i.e. patient safety tools• Research i.e. standard performance assessments ward simulation UG/ FYI• Renewal i.e. Technical and non technical skills• Reinforcement i.e. e-learning procedure packs

• What is a symptom?– Cough– Sputum– Haemoptysis– Wheeze– Hoarseness– Chest pain– Dyspnoea
![Page 9: Institute of Health Skills and Education College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing University of Dundee Masters in Biomedical Engineering Masters in Design.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032607/56649ed95503460f94be8533/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
• What is a sign?– General signs
• Clubbing• Cyanosis• Staining• Wasting
![Page 10: Institute of Health Skills and Education College of Medicine, Dentistry and Nursing University of Dundee Masters in Biomedical Engineering Masters in Design.](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022032607/56649ed95503460f94be8533/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
• Specific chest signs– Inspection
• Scars • Accessory muscle use
– Palpation • Trachea• chest expansion• tactile vocal fremitus
– Percussion– Auscultation
• Breath sounds • Added sounds• whispering pectoriloquy

• Please watch this video clip about a patient with a respiratory problem
• Then spend 5 minutes in pairs and discuss – What symptoms did this patient have ?– What respiratory symptoms did this patient have? – What anatomical structures might be affected to
cause these symptoms? – What homeostatic changes have occurred to cause
the patients’ symptoms ?

Divide into four groups
Circulate through the following four stations 1. Simulated patient and applied anatomy
1. Examination of airway simulator2. Surface anatomy of patient with respiratory symptoms3. Auscultation – use of the stethescope
2. Assessing breathing 1. PEFR, pulse oximetry, spirometry, oxygen therapy
3. Sim Man- Exploring the physiology of the simulator1. ABCDE2. Chest examination
4. The use of simulation for learning about respiratory conditions• ICAST online programme • Breath sound simulators
