South African Designers interact with IAM students
STUDENT’S WORK
The students of Fashion & Lifestyle Design went to Bhuj in Gujarat to explore the craft treasure as part of
their curriculum under the subject named “Craft Documentation”. Ms. Garima Vashisht, a faculty member
of IAM accompanied the students to the villages of Gujarat. The magnificent hands on experience of two
weeks on “Exploration of Indian Craft Traditions Project” with the artisans in the workshops of Kala-
Raksha, an NGO in ‘Toonda Vand’ provided students a splendid exposure about the existence of art in
Gujarat. Away from the hustle and bustle of the Metropolitan life, the students got the insight of the
incredible craftsmanship of Gujarat. The workshops incorporated the embroideries done by different
tribes of Kutch, famous Block printing–Ajrakh, Batik Block printing, weaving on the pit loom and the
colorful tie and dye process. Ms. Judy Frator, a world renowned author of the book named “Threads of
Identity”, interacted with the students regularly to upgrade the knowledge of the students about the craft
at present. The students indeed got great exposure by living among the craftsmen of Gujarat.

Three students of IAM, Kriti Biala, Irika Mehta and Suchi Smita of Fashion and Lifestyle Design, second
semester experimented on theme ‘rainbow and earth’ on quilling. Quilling or paper filigree is an art
form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create
decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then
glued at the tip and these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental
patterns similar to ironwork. This exercise helps students to develop a great sense of design quality into
their future original work. “We prepared this dress based on the theme ‘rainbow and earth’. The seven
colours of rainbow have been used extensively. And the skirt in earth colour helps neutralize the
rainbow colours” said Kriti Biala. “Through this design we are trying to depict how the rain and sun
together form the rainbow with the drop shaped quillsmade from paper in the shades of a rainbow.
These droplets fall on the barren ground depicted by the black flower quills and the flowers bloom and
grow in beautiful rainbow colours” added Irika Mehta. IAM students are trained under the able
guidance of Mr. Snehasish Ray (Chief Coordinator, International Pathways) and Ms. Garima Vashist.

exploration of the current semester (Jan-May 2013) which
was evaluated by a panel of eminent jury members. The
students displayed exclusive work done in Elements of
Fashion, Fashion Illustration, Pattern making, Draping,
Garment Construction, Surface Ornamentation, Computer
Aided Design (CAD), and Design Projects showcasing the
‘creative flavours towards the end of the semester’.
Dr. Darlie Koshy, DG & CEO, IAM & ATDC while appreciating
the efforts put in by the students and the creative output
from the budding fashion designers said “Fashion is
timeless, but innovative ideas can only create sustenance
and help in the industry growth”.

The final year students of Apparel Design and Merchandising visited different places in Uttar
Pradesh to explore the traditional art and craft as part of “Craft Documentation”. Ms. Archana Puri
and Mr. Gurmeet Singh, faculty members of IAM accompanied the students to various places of
Uttar Pradesh such as Bareilly, Rampur and Moradabad. While in Bareilly, the students learnt vivid
art and craft work like Zari & Zardozi, cane furniture, bamboo work, wooden furniture etc. The
students also visited different villages in Bareilly named as Kargaina, Maheshpura, Bidoliya to
interact with the artisans to explore about the variety of pearls, sequins etc. After Bareilly, the
students proceeded to Rampur, the place famous for its hand crafted product of applique work
called Patti work. This handcraft is one of the majorly adopted sources of women empowerment in
Rampur. The students learnt this work from the ladies and understood how the fabric is cut into
motifs, hemmed onto the base fabric and stems are embroidered in stem stitch. Thereafter, the
students went to Moradabad, which helped them understand functions of many small scale brass
ware industries of art brass ware. The students of ADM are inspired from Indian craft and are now
converting it to “Furture of Fashion”.
“Do Denim Makeover”
Two students of IAM, Kanishk Bhardwaj and Kanika Mahajan participated in the “Do Denim
Makeover” event organised by the Future Group at Central Mall, MG Road Haryana. The
event started on 4th June 2013 for a period of one month. Students got an opportunity to
apply real time Denim Makeover advises and work on makeover plans with the customers.
Activities on Do Denims include Embellishments, Embroidery, Patch works, Threading, Prints,
Colour, Shredded and Embossing. Gurgaon Central provided the raw material and tailoring
support. They got a chance to work on denims brands like Lee, Wrangler, Levi’s, Voi, Pepe
Jeans, Flying Machine and U.S. Polo. “The response is really amazing. We have an average of 8
to 10 walk-ins every day for the makeover. And we feel good when the customers are happy at
the end of the makeover.” said Kanishk Bhardwaj, student of IAM. Do Denim was born in 2004
and the international distribution started in 2007. Do Denim is a lifestyle apparel concept that
brings together global fashion trends and product value without compromising top quality
materials and finishes. Unlike most market participants, Do Denim has introduced a wide
assortment of styles in its Tops and Jeans throughout the year.
