President’s Greeting
Dear Fellow Women’s Institute Members,
As I sit here on this cold (-20 degrees) and windy day writing this report it is difficult to imagine that
when you ladies are reading this message winter will nearly be over and spring will be around the
corner!
Our second PEIWI Levee was a success this past January – many people braved the -22 degree
temperatures to attend. This year we partnered with the Farm Centre’s Board of Directors for a joint
Levee. February saw us celebrate Founder’s Day. I hope lots of branches had fun participating in the
WI Month Contest.
As always March will be busy with District Area Conventions. It certainly keeps the Provincial Board members busy in
ensuring that at least one Board member attends each convention. For those of you ladies responsible for sending in annual
reports to the Provincial Conveners I encourage you to mail/email these as soon as you can. The Provincial Conveners use
these reports to make their annual report for the upcoming PEIWI Annual Convention. They have a deadline to meet, as the
convention booklet goes to print in April.
The Veseys Spring Bulb Fundraiser is a fantastic way to easily raise funds for your branch. The deadline is May 1, 2014.
Details on participation were in the January Notes & News. Remember – half of all money collected stays with your branch.
Our fall bulbs will soon be peaking through the ground – how exciting!
I am looking forward to meeting many of you over the coming months.

PEI Executive Officer to FWIC The last FWIC Executive meeting was held in Brantford, Ontario, from November 15-17, 2013
with much being accomplished in just one weekend. President Marie Kenny reported on the
ACWW Conference in Chennai, India, attended by about 40 Canadian delegates. She proudly
noted that Sheila Needham of Quebec was elected Area Canada President; Margaret Yetman of
Newfoundland, ACWW Deputy President; and Sharon Hatten of British Columbia, Chair of the
United Nations Committee. The new world President is Ruth Shanks from Australia. Our Citizen-
ship and Legislation Convener will write letters supporting the Resolutions passed there. Our next
FWIC Board Meeting will be held in Camrose, Alberta, from June 15-17 just following the World
Area Canada Conference from June 12-14, 2014, making it convenient for Presidents and Execu-
tive Officers to attend both.
Each Convener and Committee Chair gave reports on the work accomplished since last June. Dis-
cussion was held on the new International Peace Garden Scholarship with Manitoba WI offering to take care of chaperones,
food, and shuttle travel from Winnipeg. Each province will provide travel funding for their delegates. What an exciting ven-
ture for the young women selected! A new program on Water Awareness was launched and Agricultural facts across the
country presented. The Executive is reviewing the Constitution and By-laws and the Policy and Administrative Guidelines.
As Publicity Chair, I will gratefully accept news items and photos as well as items for the Tweedsmuir History. President
Marie and Linda Hoy are constantly posting on Facebook so become a Friend and learn about all the events. The new green
Messenger Bag has become a hit as a fundraiser and hopefully each branch is having fun creating a “Willie the Worm” and
feeding her a few coins at their meetings.
The Adelaide Hoodless Homestead Committee invited us for lunch on Saturday and a tour through the home in St. George
where Adelaide Hunter grew up. It was thrilling to see some of the dishes and artifacts she used as a child and in her marital
home. Then on Sunday, we visited the Erland Lee Museum in Stoney Creek where we saw the original Constitution and
By-laws and The First Stoney Creek Women’s Institute Minute Book. After a delicious lunch in the Carriage House, we
toured the historic property on the Niagara Escarpment. On Saturday evening, President Marie presented a gift to Barbara
Sheardown, our Executive Director, who has resigned after ten years of dedicated service. As a WI member of St. George,
Barb plans to assist with Homestead tours as needed.
It was a very productive and enjoyable weekend leaving us renewed, invigorated, and filled with a greater perspective of the
scope and profound influence that Women’s Institute has had on society, not only in Canada but worldwide.
-Carol MacLellen, PEI Executive Officer to FWIC
Agriculture Report I am writing as another snow storm is hitting our beautiful Island and snow is piling up even more.
I hope everyone will have time to think about the importance agriculture plays in our Island life. We
have kits available in office or at www.peiwi.ca which are a good resource of useful information to use.
Also remember buying locally means you receive fresh vegetables, meat and fish which helps out our
farmers. With less travel costs of shipping produce here, it reduces pollution in the air, this helps out our
world for not only us but for all life to come.
As a member of the Agriculture Awareness Committee representing PEIWI, we are involved in the Ca-
nadian Agriculture Literacy Week that will take place in March 2014. Last year over 93 classes and
1646 students had a one hour presentation from a local farmer. This is an opportunity to educate our
island youth about the importance of the Island agriculture industry. We will be looking for presenters to
go into these classes to read to the children and interact with them (all things will be provided). Please
let me know if you or anyone you know would be interested in helping out our young students.
If you have any question or requests regarding the agriculture convenership, please feel free to call me.
-Helen Dawson, PEIWI Agriculture Convener

Members and former members of the Pleasant Valley Women’s Institute along with members
of their twin Women’s Institute, Avonlea WI, gathered at the home of Louise Weeks to cele-
brate the 90th Anniversary of the branch. Barbara Weeks greeted everyone and supplied them
with name tags. President Carol MacLellan welcomed all members and read some comments
about WI made by Mrs. Elizabeth Carruthers, daughter of the first President, Mrs. John Mac-
Kay. Guest speaker, Marlene Campbell, of Heritage Summerside, presented some very inspir-
ing insights on what Adelaide Hoodless would think if she were here today. Louise Weeks, Sec-
retary-Treasurer, enlightened the members on the achievements and changes of the branch over
the nine decades. On behalf of the Provincial Board, Carol MacLellan presented a Congratula-
tory Certificate to Vice-President, Norma Pike. This was followed by members expressing their
experiences with WI, Fun & Nonsense, and delicious refreshments. Carol MacLellan and Helen
Barlow cut the cake, thus ending a wonderful evening of celebration.

On Thursday Eve November 28 all fifteen active members of the Knutsford Women’s Institute
met for dinner at the G&E Restaurant to celebrate the 85th Anniversary of the Knutsford WI.
The Branch was formed on November 28, 1928 at the Knutsford School, when thirteen women
met on that cold November night with a vision to join together to work for Home and Country.
This was in the day of oil lamps, wood stoves, horse and sleigh/wagons. They planned better
than they knew.
Also in attendance was Edna Gallant representing Scotia Bank, who presented a Community
Service Award of $1000 to the Knutsford Women’s Institute for their volunteer work for Home
and Country. Also in attendance were representatives of the Provincial Board and the National
Board. Jacquie Laird, PEIWI President-Elect, Carol Connick, PEIWI Vice President, Carol
MacLellan Federated Women’s Institute of Canada who brought greetings from Marie Kenny
President of FWIC and spoke on the work of the National Board. After a delicious dinner the
group moved to the Corinthian Home to the home of Empress MacDowell for the monthly
meeting and a time of fellowship where Jacquie Laird on behalf of the Provincial Board brought
greetings and presented a Certificate of Recognition to the Knutsford WI for 85 years of ser-
vice. She also presented a Certificate of Appreciation Recognition for 50 years of service to
Isabel Harris, Lorraine Harris and Verna Smallman.
A Certificate of Congratulations was read from Honourable Robert Henderson, Minister of
Tourism and Culture. After a brief meeting, President Orell thanked guests for their presenta-
tions and for travelling up to be a part of the Knutsford WI 85th Anniversary celebration and
wished everyone a safe trip home.

The Knutsford WI held its annual Christmas Party at The Community Centre on Thursday
