Harper College Senior Walking Club

Thursdays, June 8 & 15 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Dee invites you to attend her two free walking classes on Thursdays, June 8 and 15, from 10-11 a.m. Meet at the Wojcik Center lobby for an hour of fun, fitness and new friends.

By joining the Harper College Senior Walking Club, you can connect with others who share your goals, lifestyles, schedules and hobbies. ■■ ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

THE TIFFANY STUDIOS OF NEW YORKLewis Comfort Tiffany begged, borrowed, and stole ideas that he used to turn ordinary objects into extraordinary works of art such as jewelry, trophies, pottery, glass, desk sets, and mosaics. Tiffany also created stunning lamps and the palatial windows in the White House. Let’s look behind the scenes at The Tiffany Studios of New York and a man’s vision to sell to the wealthy and, eventually, ordinary people. Includes a show-and-tell presentation of tools that have not changed very much in 100 years. Ann Leslie is a stained glass artist who currently works on commissions. THE FABULOUS DALE CHIHULY AND THE GLASS ART MOVEMENTThe greatest living master of the ancient medium of glass, Dale Chihuly has breathed new life into a traditional art form through his technical innovations and extravagant, large-scale, glass installations. His dream was to shape hot molten glass into unique forms in a studio setting and to take this process to places it had never been before. His fantastic multi-shaped, colorful glass towers, temples, and amazing installations have incorporated outdoor natural settings and existing man-made architecture, such as Chicago’s Garfield Park Conservatory, as backgrounds for his art. The Saturday Evening Post published 323 original works by Rockwell over 47 years. Building on this success, he created covers for other magazines including The Literary Digest and LOOK. Rockwell was a master illustrator, bringing his special commentaries on American life to the public through high-quality, color reproductions on newsstands around the world. HOW TIFFANY WAS SAVEDIn 1957, Laurelton Hall, the Art Nouveau country estate and 84-room mansion of Louis Comfort Tiffany, burned to the ground. Its 60 acres of carefully planned gardens overlooked Long Island Sound. This grand estate housed Tiffany’s most prized art, created at his studios in New York City. Statuary, windows, furnishings, mosaics, glass, pottery, and ornamental work were all saved by Hugh and Jeannette McKean, who began the core collection at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. The splendor of Laurelton Hall is visited through rare photos of the estate and mansion. Ann Leslie is a stained glass artist who currently works on commissions. THE GELASIAN DECREE: THE “APPROVED” BOOK LIST OF THE BIBLEThe Gelasian Decree from the 6th century CE includes both the “approved” list of biblical texts (the canon) and the original “banned book” list (the rejected texts). Although some of the texts mentioned in the decree are lost to history, the numerous copies of others suggest that this ancient “hit list” of texts that Christians shouldn’t consider authentic may have actually made them all the more enticing! ■■ CHICAGO: YESTERDAY AND TODAY

CHICAGO’S GANGSTERSChicago has a reputation as a city constantly on the move—always plotting, planning, and scheming to find ways to make a buck, both licit and illicit. The city has a long history of organized crime with roots dating back to the earliest time of European settlement. In the 1920’s—with the onset of Prohibition and in the midst of an era of change and turmoil—Chicago’s identification with the mob became firmly fixed in the popular imagination, with implications for its culture, politics, and governance. Harper College faculty member Jim Edstrom will discuss this era with its unique characters. Pizza with a Professor Series. Enjoy pizza while a Harper College Professor provides a fascinating lecture. You will view film excerpts, paintings and photographs, and hear the jazz, film scores, and hardboiled prose by significant authors of “pulp fiction.” Discussion of the existentialist attitude of these works, spawned by the isolation and alienation of post-war America, includes examples of the groundbreaking way in which violence, crime, gender roles, race and sexuality are depicted in these films. HISTORY

THE SILK ROAD, EXOTIC TRADE ROUTE OF HISTORYThe historic Silk Road linked Europe and the Middle East with Central Asia and China. As we travel (by digital presentation) along that famed, ancient trade route, we will find caravans loaded with valuable trade goods such as silk, spices, gold, silver, and gems along with paper and gun powder. Languages and cultures were exchanged, and religions were spread. We’ll look at the how the Silk Road’s trade and cultural exchange influenced history before the time when we were connected by transoceanic sea voyages.CRN: 80664 MON LLI 1199-0996/5/17 1:00 PM-2:30 PMInstructor: Sara Drower FVS FEES: $15

WHO REALLY DISCOVERED AMERICAAt least a dozen different explorers from various countries may have set foot in the Americas before Columbus arrived in 1492. These include Chinese, Japanese, Polynesians, Norse, Welsh, Irish, and ancient Hebrew adventurers. We will be detectives as we consider the historical evidence: the kinds of boats they built that might survive ocean travel, possible routes and artifacts that were found in the Americas that might prove that some of them may have been here before Columbus. It will be an interesting voyage through history as we try to sort out fact from fiction.CRN: 80663 MON LLI 1198-0996/26/17 1:00 PM-2:30 PMInstructor: Sara Drower BPDP FEES: $15

THE MEMORY PALACE OF MATTEO RICCIIn 1577 Jesuit Priest Matteo Ricci left Italy to convert China to Christ. An Italian missionary Priest in China during the 1580’s was rare. (In fact, he was the first European to enter the Forbidden City.) One who developed a memory system that attracted young Confucian Scholars looking for an important advantage in Ming Dynasty China is astonishing. You will hear Matteo’s story, but equally interesting, his mnemonics have special meaning for us today as we battle the modern epidemic of memory loss.CRN: 80749 TUE LLI 1179-0996/27/17 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: John Moore FVS FEES: $15

HALSEY’S TYPHOON: THE STORY OF AN EPIC STORM AND RESCUEOn December 14, 1944, the Third Fleet, commanded by Admiral Bull Halsey, sailed directly into the path of Typhoon Cobra with its 150-mph winds and 90-foot high waves. The storm sunk three destroyers and sent 900 men into shark-infested waters. The tiny Destroyer Escort USS Tabberer, commanded by a naval reservist, heroically saved 55 lives. These real events inspired “The Caine Mutiny” novel and movie. Note: Room location at the Garlands will be SST. AN ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE: ASHFALL FOSSIL BEDSNative American elders looked out onto the Great Plains and saw the spirits of horses, giraffes and other animals non-existent in their times. Europeans ignored those stories like they ignored other matters of “the primitives.” But both peoples found animal bones and trees of stone they did not understand. A far away super caldera had erupted and covered vast areas of a green, lush landscape 10-12 million years ago. Ashfall has remained to tell its astonishing story of giraffe-like camels, rhinos, raccoon dogs, llama-like camels and five types of horses. MITCHELL PREHISTORIC INDIAN VILLAGEEvery culture has unique art forms, living habits and behaviors that can be used to help trace them through time. As modern people, we often fail to realize how far ancient peoples traveled across oceans and continents until we come upon evidence that cannot be disputed. In 1910, a student from Dakota Wesleyan University discovered this site. People belonging to the Mississippian Culture had traveled north and west following the waterways over 1,100 years ago and this is their village. The richness of their life remains behind for us to see. ■■ MUSIC

BEGINNING LIFELONG UKULELEJoin the new LLI Ukulele class and start enjoying your instrument on the first day. The uke can be one of the simplest instruments to learn so no previous musical experience is necessary. You will learn simple chords to get started, and as you progress through the class, we’ll keep the focus on fun. The music we learn will span a wide variety of styles under the direction of Voytek Falendysz. The fee for the class includes a ukulele that you will keep. MUSIC APPRECIATIONIssa Boulos, Harper College Music and Arts Center Coordinator, has designed this course to help students further their appreciation of music. The course will discuss how music is created, and how it has been used as a creative tool of expression, imagination, and entertainment. You will advance your listening skills as you actively engage in discussions which lead to a better understanding of what music actually contains. Issa will help you explore western musical genres from medieval through contemporary; folk, popular and religious music; and a sampling of music from non-western cultures. No music reading ability or other background in music is required.CRN: 80645 WED LLI 0811-0996/7/17-6/21/17 9:00 AM-11:00 AMInstructor: Issa Boulos W 219 FEES: $25

JAZZ PIANO: THE INFLUENCE OF BILL EVANSBill Evans was one of the most important jazz pianists to emerge in the 1950’s, remaining influential until his death in 1980. Ken Spurr is Harper College’s Professor of Jazz! A pianist himself, he will discuss Evans’ significance by examining three of his most historic and influential recordings: Portrait in Jazz, Explorations, and Sunday at the Village Vanguard/Waltz for Debbie (featuring his best trio partners Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums). Ken will discuss this great music and sit at the piano to play excerpts from some of the most important pieces.CRN: 80661 MON LLI 1196-0997/10/17 9:00 AM-11:00 AMInstructor: Kenneth Spurr BPDP FEES: $19

LIFELONG UKULELE ENSEMBLEEach week you will work on mastering a repertoire under the direction of Voytek Falendysz. He will assist you with your technique as you and your classmates develop together into a light ensemble. Be a part of the group that brings a smile to everyone’s face. To join in, you should have completed Beginning Lifelong Ukulele or have some experience and know the basic chords on a uke. You must provide your own instrument.CRN: 80648 TUE LLI 1173-0997/11/17-8/15/17 9:00 AM-10:00 AMInstructor: Voytek Falendysz L 222FEES: $49

BEFORE THE BLUES Before the blues became formalized and structured, African Americans were innovating styles based on African musical retentions and European instruments. You will hear a variety of examples of pre-World War I American music that led eventually to Blues and Country music. Anthropologist Scott Cashman will describe the music and perform examples on guitar and banjo. Major figures discussed will include Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, Jimmie Rodgers, and others. Enjoy playing while you improve your mind! Recent research finds that music lessons are like workouts for your brain, boosting memory, verbal fluency and other cognitive functions.

■■ PARANORMAL

PARANORMAL INVESTIGATION - THE RESULTSParanormal investigators use varied techniques and technologies in their investigations. The results can be interesting, convincing and misleading. Mary Marshall is an experienced investigator with fascinating results to go along with a healthy dose of skepticism. Her observations are thoughtful and revealing as she shares audio (EVP) and video recordings, photographs, and various other sources. Mary has a 25 year history in the paranormal field that informs her observations and discoveries.CRN: 80654 WED LLI 1187-0996/7/17 1:00 PM-3:00 PMInstructor: Mary Marshall FVS FEES: $19

GHOSTS OF CHICAGOLANDLearn the folklore surrounding Chicago’s supernatural realm. Chicago was settled amidst the tumult and violence of the frontier. Clashes with Native American tribes and the British military made life in early “Checagou” less than peaceful. Chicago has experienced it all, from the bloody Fort Dearborn Massacre to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre; from the flames of the Chicago Fire to the harrowing Eastland disaster; from the horrific “Murder Castle” mass murders of H.H. Holmes to the treacherous deeds of John Wayne Gacy and Richard Speck. It is no wonder that the Windy City is also known as one of the most haunted cities on Earth. THE GHOSTS OF CHICAGO’S GANGSTERSIs Al Capone’s ghost still going about his business in Chicago? How about Dillinger? Ursula Bielski has emerged as the leading historian of all things paranormal in Chicago. She will lead you through a look at the ghosts of Chicago’s gangsters, telling the stories of their demise and continuation as ghosts. Ursula is the author of more than 10 books on paranormal topics, most recently writing about Haunted Gary and Bachelors Grove Cemetery. ■■ US PRESIDENTS

THE PRESIDENCY OF BILL CLINTONIt has been more than 16 years since Bill Clinton left the White House. When we think of him, we often confront images of Monica Lewinsky and his impeachment trial. But his Presidency was much more than that – it attempted health care reform, implemented NAFTA, generated steady economic expansion, passed welfare reform, and intervened in southeast Europe. It produced the last budget surplus our country has enjoyed. Professor Gary Midkiff will examine Clinton’s two terms as President – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Members receive 50 percent off.CRN: 80650 FRI LLI 1183-1006/2/17-6/9/17 9:00 AM-11:00 AMInstructor: Gary Midkiff W 219FEES: $72 MEMBERS: $36

THE PRESIDENCY OF DWIGHT EISENHOWERHe promised to go to Korea – and he did. But, his partial success there became a predictor of his foreign policy. His mixed success was in part because of his reliance on the Dulles brothers. Domestically, he was more effective though his failure to condemn Senator Joseph McCarthy haunted him. Ike was much admired and often questioned. Professor Gary Midkiff will examine Eisenhower’s two terms as President, the creation of NASA, and the embarrassment of the U-2 incident. Members receive 50 percent off.CRN: 80651 WED LLI 1184-1006/14/17-6/21/17 9:00 AM-11:00 AMInstructor: Gary Midkiff W 218FEES: $72 MEMBERS: $36
