SAP Netweaver Application Server Java / / Visual Administrator
Installing Visual Administrator on a client machine
Purpose
Describe the ways in which the Visual Administrator can be installed standalone without the requirement for an Netweaver Application Server Java system installation
Overview
The Visual Administrator is a standalone GUI administration tool that can connect to both local and remote running AS Java instances. The Visual Administrator is installed with each AS Java system but it
is also possible to install the tool without an AS Java system, for example on a client PC and remotely administer running AS Java instances in the landscape.
Prerequsites
Being a swing-based GUI it is a prerequisite for use of the Visual Administrator that a supported JRE is installed on the host where the Visual Administrator will run. A JRE with the same major version or
higher than the JDK used by the AS Java systems to which the Visual Administrator will connect is usually sufficient. See PAM for more details on the JDK versions supported by each release of the AS
Java
The AS Java systems to which the Visual Administrator should connect must be reachable from the machine where the Visual Administrator is installed. Specifically the p4 port of the target AS Java
machine must be reachable.
Installation
There are two ways to install the Visual Administrator as a standalone tool on your local machine:
Take the Visual Administrator from an existing AS Java system
This is the most straightforward approach and as long as there is an appropriately installed JRE on the machine the GUI should appear when go.bat/sh is called
1. Copy the /usr/sap///j2ee/admin folder from the file system of an AS Java in the system landscape to your local machine
2. Configure the VA to connect to a remote AS Java system as described in How to Start the Visual Administrator
Download Visual Administrator from the service marketplace
1. Go to https://service.sap.com/support
-> software downloads
-> Support Packages and Patches
-> A - Z Index
-> N
-> SAP NETWEAVER
-> SAP NETWEAVER (ideally choose the version applicable to the target AS Java systems)
-> Entry by Component
-> Application Server Java
-> J2EE ENGINE CORE TOOLS
-> OS independent
Download the latest available CORETOOLS_0#####.SCA
2. Use SAPCAR to extract the contents of the CORETOOLS_0#####.SCA using the command '/sapcar -xvf .SAR'
3. Locate the visual-admin.sda in the DEPLOYARCHIVES folder and use a zip utility to extract the content of the sda to the location in which you want to install the Visual Administrator
4. Configure the VA to connect to a remote AS Java system as described in How to Start the Visual Administrator

Hi Patrick,
unfortunately I always get the error message "format error in header" when I try to extract the SCA files.
I have tried using SAPCAR version 720 p315 and 700 p24. in both cases the same error.
I would really appreciate your help.
Regards,
Niklas
