This is to certify that the Nortel Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series were evaluated to the international regulatory standards for electromagnetic compliance (EMC) and safety and were found to have met the requirements for the following international standards:

• EMC - Electromagnetic Emissions – CISPR 22, Class A• EMC - Electromagnetic Immunity – CISPR 24• Electrical Safety – IEC 60950, with CB member national deviations

National electromagnetic compliance (EMC) statements of compliance

FCC statement (USA only)

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class A digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy. If it is not installed and used in accordance with the instruction manual, it may cause harmful interference to radio communications. Nortel Networks Inc. software license agreement

This Software License Agreement (“License Agreement”) is between you, the end-user (“Customer”) and Nortel Networks Corporation and its subsidiaries and affiliates (“Nortel Networks”). PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY. YOU MUST ACCEPT THESE LICENSE TERMS IN ORDER TO DOWNLOAD AND/OR USE THE SOFTWARE. USE OF THE SOFTWARE CONSTITUTES YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT. If you do not accept these terms and conditions, return the Software, unused and in the original shipping container, within 30 days of purchase to obtain a credit for the full purchase price.

“Software” is owned or licensed by Nortel Networks, its parent or one of its subsidiaries or affiliates, and is copyrighted and licensed, not sold. Software consists of machine-readable instructions, its components, data, audio-visual content (such as images, text, recordings or pictures) and related licensed materials including all whole or partial copies. Nortel Networks grants you a license to use the Software only in the country where you acquired the Software. You obtain no rights other than those granted to you under this License Agreement. You are responsible for the selection of the Software and for the installation of, use of, and results obtained from the Software.

1. Licensed Use of Software. Nortel Networks grants Customer a nonexclusive license to use a copy of the Software on only one machine at any one time or to the extent of the activation or authorized usage level, whichever is applicable. To the extent Software is furnished for use with designated hardware or Customer furnished equipment (“CFE”), Customer is granted a nonexclusive license to use Software only on such hardware or CFE, as applicable. Software contains trade secrets and Customer agrees to treat Software as confidential information using the same care and discretion Customer uses with its own similar information that it does not wish to disclose, publish or disseminate. Customer will ensure that anyone who uses the Software does so only in compliance with the terms of this Agreement. Customer shall not a) use, copy, modify, transfer or distribute the Software except as expressly authorized; b) reverse assemble, reverse compile, reverse engineer or otherwise translate the Software; c) create derivative works or modifications unless expressly authorized; or d) sublicense, rent or lease the Software. Licensors of intellectual property to Nortel Networks are beneficiaries of this provision. Upon termination or breach of the license by Customer or in the event designated hardware or CFE is no longer in use, Customer will promptly return the Software to Nortel Networks or certify its destruction. Nortel Networks may audit by remote polling or other reasonable means to determine Customer’s Software activation or usage levels. If suppliers of third party software included in Software require Nortel Networks to include additional or different terms, Customer agrees to abide by such terms provided by Nortel Networks with respect to such third party software.

2. Warranty. Except as may be otherwise expressly agreed to in writing between Nortel Networks and Customer, Software is provided “AS IS” without any warranties (conditions) of any kind. NORTEL NETWORKS DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES (CONDITIONS) FOR THE SOFTWARE, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABLITITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND ANY WARRANTY OF NON-INFRINGEMENT. Nortel Networks is not obligated to provide support of any kind for the Software. Some jurisdictions do not allow exclusion of implied warranties, and, in such event, the above exclusions may not apply.

3. Limitation of Remedies. IN NO EVENT SHALL NORTEL NETWORKS OR ITS AGENTS OR SUPPLIERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: a) DAMAGES BASED ON ANY THIRD PARTY CLAIM; b) LOSS OF, OR DAMAGE TO, CUSTOMER’S RECORDS, FILES OR DATA; OR c) DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, PUNITIVE, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES (INCLUDING LOST PROFITS OR SAVINGS), WHETHER IN CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE) ARISING OUT OF YOUR USE OF THE SOFTWARE, EVEN IF NORTEL NETWORKS, ITS AGENTS OR SUPPLIERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THEIR POSSIBILITY. The forgoing limitations of remedies also apply to any developer and/or supplier of the Software. Such developer and/or supplier is an intended beneficiary of this Section. Some jurisdictions do not allow these limitations or exclusions and, in such event, they may not apply.

4. General

a. If Customer is the United States Government, the following paragraph shall apply: All Nortel Networks Software available under this License Agreement is commercial computer software and commercial computer software documentation and, in the event Software is licensed for or on behalf of the United States Government,

the respective rights to the software and software documentation are governed by Nortel Networks standard commercial license in accordance with U.S. Federal Regulations at 48 C.F.R. Sections 12.212 (for non-Odd entities) and 48 C.F.R. 227.7202 (for Odd entities).

b. Customer may terminate the license at any time. Nortel Networks may terminate the license if Customer fails to comply with the terms and conditions of this license. In either event, upon termination, Customer must either return the Software to Nortel Networks or certify its destruction.

c. Customer is responsible for payment of any taxes, including personal property taxes, resulting from Customer’s use of the Software. Customer agrees to comply with all applicable laws including all applicable export and import laws and regulations.

d. Neither party may bring an action, regardless of form, more than two years after the cause of the action arose.

e. The terms and conditions of this License Agreement form the complete and exclusive agreement between Customer and Nortel Networks.

f. This License Agreement is governed by the laws of the country in which Customer acquires the Software. If the Software is acquired in the United States, then this License Agreement is governed by the laws of the state of New York.

Preface

The Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series is a fixed port hardware-based Layer 3 routing switch that supports three models:

• the Ethernet Routing Switch 1612G 12 small form factor (SFP) GBICs, which provides small to medium aggregation

• the Ethernet Routing Switch 1624G 24 SFP GBICs, which provides small to medium aggregation

• the Ethernet Routing Switch 1648T 48 10/100, plus 4 SFP GBICs, which provides small edge concentration

The Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series Layer 3 routing switch can reside in the wiring closet (1648T) and in the data center or network core (1612G and 1624G). The Ethernet Routing Switch 1648T provides Layer 3 functionality in the wiring closet with 48 10/100 ports and 4 GBIC ports. The Ethernet Routing Switch 1612G and 1624G provide 12 and 24 gigabit Ethernet ports for wiring closet aggregation as well as high-speed connections for servers and power users. These types of aggregation devices typically reside in the network core or data center, but can be placed anywhere.

This guide provides instructions on how to install the Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series switch in an equipment rack.

This guide also describes some of the routine tasks of operating the Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series switch, and includes technical specifications.

This guide is intended for qualified service personnel who are installing the Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series switch for the first time. Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series models

The 1600 Series switches are available in the following three models:

• Ethernet Routing Switch 1648T

• Ethernet Routing Switch 1624G

• Ethernet Routing Switch 1612G

Each of these models are explained in more detail in the sections that follow.

Ethernet Routing Switch 1648T

The 1648T switch has 48 Fast Ethernet ports and four slots that accept Gigabit Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) modules. These Fast Ethernet ports can be connected to remote network devices at either 10 Mb/s or 100 Mb/s. They can automatically detect the highest communication speed and the duplex state (full- or half-duplex) that the remote network device can accept, and configure themselves to provide the highest speed connection possible.

In addition, the 48 Fast Ethernet ports can detect whether a cross-over or straight-through Ethernet cable has been used, and automatically connect the receive and transmit twisted pair wires to the appropriate receive and transmit terminals. This means that a Fast Ethernet network connection to a remote network device can use either a cross-over or a straight-through Ethernet cable, and still maintain a valid link. Figure 1 shows the front panel of the 1648T switch.

Enclosure

Each 1600 Series switch consists of a standard 19” rack-mountable, sheet metal enclosure. Mounting ears are included in the switch’s packaging to allow mounting the switch in a standard 19” electronic equipment rack.

Cooling fans and air vents are located on the sides and the back panel of the enclosure. When mounting the switch, ensure that these cooling fans and vents are not blocked. In addition, you should allow sufficient airflow to prevent the switch from over-heating.

Power Supplies

The 1600 Series switches include two internal power supplies. These units have two AC receptacles for AC power cords and two power on/off switches to control each power supply (Figure 4 on page 25). This provides a redundant power supply (RPSU) in case of failure of either the power supply itself, or the AC circuit.

When you view the units from the rear, the power supply on the right is the main power supply, while the one on the left is the secondary one that controls the RPSU. When switching over to the RPSU, Nortel recommends that you wait at least 2 seconds (until the RPSU is fully active) before switching off the main power supply.

Note: The 1600 Series switch AC power supplies accept an input voltage of between 100-240 VAC. See Appendix A, “Technical specifications,” on page 43 for additional information on power supply specifications.

Unpacking the Switch

Begin by opening the shipping carton and carefully unpacking its contents. The carton should contain the following items:

• One Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series Layer 3 switch

• A mounting kit with two mounting brackets and six screws

• Two AC power cords (if ordered with appropriate country kit)

• Ensure that the surface supports at least 3 kg

• Ensure that the power outlet is within 1.82 meters (6 feet) of the device

• Visually inspect the power cord to see that it is plugged in to the AC power connector

• Ensure that there is proper heat dissipation from and adequate ventilation around the switch

• Do not place heavy objects on the switch

Installing the Switch on a Desktop or Shelf

When installing the 1600 Series switch on a desktop or shelf:

1 Attach the rubber feet included with the device to the bottom of each corner (see Figure 5).

2 Ensure you allow adequate space for ventilation between the device and the objects around it.

The 1600 Series switches can be installed in a standard 19-inch electronic equipment rack or cabinet. Along with the required screws, two mounting brackets are included in the switch’s packaging.

1 Attach the mounting brackets to the switch housing using the attachment points (see Figure 5 on page 28).

2 Use the attached brackets to mount the switch in a standard 19-inch electronic equipment rack (see Figure 6).

Powering up the Switch

The 1600 Series switch can be used with an AC power supply of 100–240 VAC, 50–60 Hz. The power switch is located at the rear of the unit adjacent to the AC power connector and the system fan. The power supply of the switch adjusts to the local power source automatically. The switch can be powered on without having any, or all of the LAN segment cables connected.

After you turn the power on, the LED indicators should respond as follows:

• All LEDs blink momentarily to represent a system reset.

• The power LED turns on and stays on as long as power is supplied.

Note: The required screws or nuts and bolts required to mount the switch to the 19-inch rack should be supplied by the rack manufacturer.

Status Information

The Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series switches have LEDs on their front panels that indicate the status of the power supply, the secondary power supply, the link between a port and a remote network device, and the presence of activity on that link.

Figure 7 on page 32 shows the LED indicators for the 1648T switch. The LEDs for the other switches in the 1600 Series display identical information. However, their layout can differ. Note that the 10/100 out of band Management port and its LEDs are unique to the 1612G/1624G models.

The 10/100 out of band Management LEDs specify the following:

• Speed: 10Mbps (green off)/ 100Mbps (green on)

• Link/Act: link (steady green)/ activity (flashing)

When the switch is first started, all of the port Link/Act LEDs flash once. The Status LED then flashes to indicate that the switch is booting and performing its Power On Self Test (POST) routine. At the end of the boot sequence, the LEDs begin their normal functions.

Power and RPSU LEDs

Each 1600 Series switch has two identical AC power supplies with independent AC main connections, as well as independent AC power switches on the rear panel of the switch. Each of these power supplies is capable of fully powering the 1600 Series switch.

If both power supplies are connected to the AC main circuit they operate in load-sharing mode. Consequently, if one of the power supplies fails, the remaining power supply then carries the full power load. The Power and RPSU LEDs work in concert to display the status of the two 1600 Series switch power supplies.

Note: The 1600 Series switches have on/off switches on the rear panel for each of the two internal power supplies (see Figure 4 on page 25). These switches must be in the On position for AC power to reach each of the power supplies.

In the unlikely event that both the main power supply and the redundant power supply fail, there is no electrical power to light any LEDs. This circumstance can also arise if you connect the switch to the main AC circuit with both the AC power switches on the rear panel of the 1600 Series switches in the Off position.

Status LED

Table 2 describes the Status LED and its behavior.

Each Fast Ethernet port on the 1600 Series switches has a two color LED that displays the status of the link between the switch and a remote network device (see Table 3).

SFP Fiber Optic Module Link/Act LEDs

On the 1600 Series switches, each Gigabit Ethernet SFP fiber optic module slot contains a green LED. This LED displays the status of the link between the switch and a remote network device as follows:

• If the LED is glowing green, the port is connected to a remote network device at a speed of 1000 Mb/s.

• If the LED is flashing green, there is activity (packets are being forwarded) between the switch and the remote network device.

LED Problem Indicators

Table 4 lists possible problems indicated by the LEDs on the 1600 Series switches and suggests corrective action.

Inserting SFP Modules

SFP modules are sensitive to static electricity. Static discharge from your clothing or other fixtures around you, even at levels that do not create a spark, can cause damage.

Before beginning the installation process, be aware that:

• An SFP module can be installed or replaced in an operating1600 Series switch without turning off power to the switch.

• Use the correct fiber optic cable type to ensure the proper performance of the fiber optic network link.

To install an SFP module:

1 Insert the module into an empty slot on the 1600 Series switch. Figure 8 on page 39 shows the module being inserted in the 1648T model. When doing so, ensure that:

Warning: Fiber optic equipment can emit laser or infrared light that can injure your eyes. Never look into an optical fiber or connector port. Always assume that fiber optic cables are connected to a light source.

Caution: Electrostatic discharge can damage hardware. To prevent static discharge damage when you work with Ethernet Routing Switch 1600 Series switch modules, place each module on a grounded antistatic mat until you are ready to install it or leave the module in the sealed ESD bag. Also, be sure to wear a discharge leash or wrist strap to free yourself of static before you touch a module.

a the SFP module is properly aligned with the slot, and that the module’s rear electrical connector is facing down for the two SFP slots on top of the group of four.

b the electrical connectors on the SFP fiber optic module are facing up for the two SFP slots on the bottom of the group of four.

2 Seat the electrical contacts in the rear of the SFP module are against the contacts in the SFP slot.

3 Gently press the module into the slot until you feel a slight click.

Removing SFP Modules

There are two methods to remove SFP modules. These methods are dependent on the module type, that is whether the module is a lever- or slider-type SFP module.

If it is a lever-type SFP module:

1 Move the small lever from the top of the module down across the front where the fiber optic cable connections are located.

2 Use the lever to gently pull the module out of the SFP slot.

Caution: SFP modules are keyed to prevent improper insertion. If the module resists pressure, do not force it. Remove it, turn it over, and reinsert it.

Note that you cannot remove this type of module without first disconnecting the fiber optic cable from the module because the fiber optic cables block the movement of the lever.

Figure 9 shows the removal of a lever-type SFP module from the Ethernet Routing Switch 1648T.

If it is a slider-type SFP module:

1 Retrieve a small tool, such as a ball-point pen.

2 Press the small slider at the bottom front of the module where the fiber optic cable connectors are located.

Pressing this slider forces it against the edge of the SFP slot on the Ethernet Routing Switch 1648T and gently releases the SFP module.

Figure 10 on page 41 shows the removal of a slider-type SFP module from the Ethernet Routing Switch 1648T.

Inserting and Removing an SFP Module Fiber Optic Cable

The SFP module fiber optic cable connectors have two small tabs, similar to the tabs on copper Category 5 Ethernet cable, or a telephone cable connector. This tab retains the connector in the SFP module, so that it cannot accidentally be pulled out, causing the loss of the link.

To remove the SFP module fiber optic cable connector from the SFP module:

1 Press down on the retaining tabs on the fiber optic cable connectors.

2 Gently pull the outer plastic casing away from the SFP module.

The connectors on many SFP fiber optic cables are grouped in pairs with a small plastic tab you can use to press both connector tabs at the same time. This allows you to remove both cable connectors as a group.

Figure 11 on page 42 displays the insertion and removal of the SFP fiber optic cables from a SFP module.

Caution: Ensure that the connector on the fiber optic cable is properly aligned. You can insert this connector one way only; if it does not fit, do not force it.

The Power Supply Unit 10 weighs approximately 100 pounds (45 kg) and the RPS 15 weighs approximately 40 pounds (17 kg). The switch housing is not strong enough to support this weight.
