INTROIT

There are many and diverse gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them. There is a multitude of ways to serve God, but it is the same God who is served.God works through the diversity of creation in creative and imaginative ways,

bringing justice, truth, and compassion to the world. Each one is gifted to partner with God in this ministry of justice, peace, and love.

(Mcry the Words" -Max JanowskiMay the words of my mouth

and the meditations of my heartBe acceptable in thy sight, 0 God,

*CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 121) Elder Milfordean Luster

One:Many:One: "-Many:One:Many:One:Many:One:All:

I lift my eyes to the hills. From where will my help come?My help comes from Yahweh, who .made heaven and earth.God will not let your footsteps slip. The one who protects you never slumbers or sleeps. With God on your side, the sun cannot overpower you by day,Nor the moon at night.Yahweh guards you from harm, guards your life.Divine Spirit guards your going out and your coming in, now and forever.Joining hearts and voices, we worship our God.

*HYMN #285 "God You Spin the Whirling Planets"

God, You spin the whirling planets, Fill the seas and spread the plain,Mold the mountains, fashion blossoms, Call forth sunshine, wind and rain.

We, created in Your image, would a true reflection beof Your justice, grace and mercy and the truth that makes us free.

You have called us to be faithful, in our life and ministry. We respond in grateful worship, joined in one community.

When we blur your gracious image, focus us and make us whole.Healed and strengthened as Your people, we move onward toward Your goal.

God, Your word is still creating, calling us to life made new.Now reveal to us fresh vistas, where there's work to dare and do.

Keep us clear of all distortion, polish us with loving care. Thus, new creatures in Your image, we'll proclaim Christ everywhere.

CALL TO CONFESSION Mr. Andrew M. Bostrom

COMMUNITY PRAYER OF CONFESSION (in unison)

Creative and Giving God, with extravagant generosity, you give us all good gifts.

When we forget to say "thank you,"teach us to delight in your generosity.

When we fail to use our gifts generously and wisely, remind us that we are responsible to care for all creation.

When we grumble and think we don't have enough, open our eyes to the pain of our sisters and brothersaround the world and in our neighborhoods.

Gracious God, as we seek to walk in partnership with the Living Christ,.open our hearts to the movement of Spiritleading us on the Jesus Way.

SILENT PRAYERS OF CONFESSION

RESPONSIVE ASSURANCE' Elder Hertha Gast

God alone knows God's purposes for us.Plans for our welfare and not for harm.God gives us a future and a hope.We will call upon God.God will listen to us.We will find God;When we seek Spirit with our whole being.Forgiving and forgiven, we live into hope.

ANTHEM (How Good to Thank our God" -Words Brian Wren-Music John Ferguson

The Combined Choirs

, How good to thank our God and speak our Savior's name, with flute and trumpet, heart and voice,

God's wonders to acclaim: Sing praises, sing praises, with psalms and hymns and songs!

Yet streams of praise go foul,Or run into the sand,

if justice cannot run and water all the land:Do justice with kindness and sing our Savior's song!

Christ has shown the way of love and praise combined, and treads the path of peace on earth with justice intertwined:

Sing praises, sing praises with psalms and hymns and songs!

Page 5: Installation Service - Fort Street Presbyterian Church

SERMON

Our praises cannot wait, our praises cannot wait till word and deed are done.

The praises cannot wait, they cannot wait till deeds are done.Spirit fills through and through with all that God has done!

Sing praises, sing praises with psalms and hymns and songs! Then let us walk in love; by love our faith is shown.

Unloving we are far from God. In loving, God is known:Through justice, with kindness we'll sing our Savior's song!

INTRODUCTION OF A NEW HYMN Rev. Dr. Brian A. Wren

*HYMN "How Can We Follow Jesus Christ?"A Hymn for Sharon Mook

Brian Wren- September 14) 2009

How can we follow Jesus Christ, together, not alone -a body, sent to show and sharethe love to us made known?

We'll gently join our scattered livesthrough Scripture, prayer and song, and sing, as each new week arrives,"To Jesus we belong."

How shall we speak of Jesus Christwhen others strut and shoutwith overactive certaintiesthat sow the seeds of doubt?

We'll tell how Christ is taking downour walls that still divide ;:-of sex and gender, class' and race, anxiety and pride.

How shall we learn of Jesus Christfrom Muslim or from Jew

· or in the deep distinctive worldsof Buddhist and Hindu?

We'll listen, and refuse the gameof who is right or wrong, then if we're asked, we'll say again,"To Jesus we belong."

Page 6: Installation Service - Fort Street Presbyterian Church

God, haul us from our rutted roadsand inward-thinking waysto be a people outward boundin action, speech and praise.

Make us convincing evidenceof what your love has donethat we may go where Jesus goes, together, and as one.

The Rev. Dr. Boyd

The Reverend Dr. Marsha Foster Boyd has served as President of Ecumenical Theological Seminary since 2006. She was previously employed for seven years as Director of Accreditation and Leadership Education at the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in Pittsburgh, PA, the organization responsible for the accreditation of some 260 seminaries in the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Boyd was Academic Dean of Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, OH, and, for nine years, she was Associate Professor of Pastoral Care & Counseling at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, OH. In each of these positions, Dr. Boyd has been the first African American woman to serve, and she is only the second African American woman president of an ATS-accredited seminary., Dr. Boyd received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in elementary education from Tufts University in Medford, MA; her Master of Divinity Degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, GA, and the Ph.D. Degree in religion and the personality sciences from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA. Dr. Boyd was ordained in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1978 and, before entering theological education full-time, she served A.M.E. churches in Georgia, Arkansas, California, and Ohio. Dr. Boyd is married to The Reverend Kenneth Boyd, Pastor of St. Andrew A.M.E. Church in Detroit, and she is the mother of one adult daughter.

The Rev. Girgis

The Reverend Raafat Shehata Girgis has been on the staff of the General Assembly Mission Council of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), where he serves as Associate for Multicultural Congregational Support. He holds two undergraduate and three master’s degrees in the social sciences, history and theology, in addition to studies leading to the Ph.D. Degree (all but dissertation). His cross cultural experiences, interfaith relations and multidisciplinary academic backgrounds bring vast insight to the classroom and the sanctuary. His work experience includes ministering churches, teaching in undergraduate and graduate schools, counseling, and lecturing in a variety of conferences in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and North America. As an ordained minister, since 1982, Raafat has served diverse groups of people in different multicultural settings. He envisions a culturally proficient church where a holistic message of the Gospel, with its spiritual transformation and social justice, is proclaimed to the whole world and the good news is provided in a cup which people recognize with great appreciation, respect and celebration of their gifts, talents and cultural backgrounds. Raafat is married to Phoebe Girgis, a registered nurse at Baptist Hospital, Louisville, KY, where they live with their three daughters, all in their teens! They are heavily involved in the church, in several sports and in music.

The Rev. Dr. Nishioka

Rodger Nishioka holds the Benton Family Chair in Christian Education at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA. While he teaches in the area of Christian education and practical theology, he specializes in ministry with youth and young adults, and has completed a research project comparing the participation of young adults in mainline protestant congregations and non-denominational, independent Christian movements. Prior to joining the faculty at Columbia, Rodger served for 12 years as denominational staff in youth and young adult ministry for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He received his undergraduate degree from Seattle Pacific University, his master’s degree in theological studies from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Austin College, and his Ph.D. Degree from Georgia State University in Atlanta. Dr. Nishioka has published several articles, chapters, and books largely focused on ministry with youth and young adults, and the educational ministry of the church as spiritual formation. The son of a honorably retired Presbyterian pastor, Rodger is evidence that you can be a pastor’s kid and still love Jesus!

The Reverend Dr. Brian A. Wren – Minister, United Reformed Church (UK) – is a writer, preacher, worship leader, and internationally published hymn-poet, with entries in most recent denominational hymnals in Britain, Canada, the United States, New Zealand, and Australia.
