2012 has been an extremely successful year for all of us at Student Experience, with innumerable remarkable moments and achievements.

It is only right that we bid the year goodbye by paying tribute to outstanding achievements and glowing contributions by students in various activities, from the field

of sports to the many societies we have on campus. In fact, the Taylor’s Awards Night (see page 12) was held for this very purpose. Amidst a night filled with fun and laughter, awards were given to the year’s most successful and active clubs.

A special mention has to be made of the Taylorians who came home as triumphant champions from the first Sukan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi (SUKIPT). Taylor’s emerged as the best placed Private University in the 13th place with 4 gold medals in swimming, 4 silver medals in badminton and swimming, and 3 on 3 Basketball Male; and 1 bronze medal in 3 on 3 Basketball Female. Our heartiest congratulations to the Sports & Recreation Centre team and the students on this awesome achievement.

Congratulations also goes out to Taylor’s School of Communication student and national swimmer Khoo Cai Lin on her remarkable, record-breaking feat at the Asian University Games in Laos, which helped our nation become the overall champions in this meet.

Taylorians also proved to be champions when it comes to sharing and caring. A new national record for the biggest mural made of cans was set, thanks to the “Yes We Can!” campaign. The 14,435 cans were later sold to recycling centres and the proceeds donated to the Thai Prosthesis Foundation. Undoubtedly, the high point of the exciting last quarter of 2012 was the Hugely successful Global Youth Conference with 200 international student leaders from 42 countries and the theme was “Equipping Gen-Y Leaders for Tomorrow”.

The curtains have been drawn on a fantastic 2012. Instead of resting on our laurels, we have started work on creating many great exciting moments in 2013 for all students. We strongly believe that your campus experience at Taylor’s University should be an unforgettable part of your life.

Here’s wishing each of you more success in 2013. May you have a happy and amazing year!

Sincerely,Angela Pok Director, Student Experience Taylor’s University

Highlights

On 12 December 2012 (12/12/12), a group of passionate Taylor’s University student volunteers achieved a new national record

for the BIGGEST MURAL MADE OF CANS measuring 19.5M long and 6.5M tall! The feat was witnessed by Professor Dato’ Dr. Hassan Said, Vice Chancellor and President of Taylor’s University along with The Malaysia Book of Records Representative, Ms. Leona Paul.

Yes We Can! was a student driven effort supporting environmental care by the Taylor’s University Community Service Initiatives (CSI) Volunteers. The Taylor’s University CSI Volunteers is a student organization formed by the Student Development Hub of Taylor’s University in April 2012 to provide a platform for students throughout the campus to be involved in community service efforts and youth volunteerism. The Taylor’s University CSI Volunteers focuses on 4 key areas to impact the community which are Crises Response, Conservation Movements, Humanitarian Aid and Youth Volunteerism.

We CAN!YES

The CSI Volunteers have launched a major conservation movement involving the entire Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus to do their part in recycling tin cans through the “Yes We Can!” campaign. The campaign, which took off in September 2012, began with only 20 CSI pioneers and now has reached a total of over 200 volunteers from Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus and Taylor’s College Subang Jaya.

This project is also in-line with the objective of 1Malaysia for Youth (1M4U) to mobilize youth volunteers from all races to undertake transformative nation-building activities in the spirit of 1Malaysia.

The campaign has successfully collected more than 14,435 tin cans to build the largest mural in Malaysia after which, the tin cans will be sold to recycling centers and the funds will be transferred to the Prosthesis Foundation, Thailand; an organization which uses recycled aluminum to make low-cost prosthetic limbs for impoverished amputees.

Visits Taylor’s Lakeside Campus

Taylor’s University was one of the essential stops for the study visit for the staff and students of Palawan State University in the Philippines. Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Perry Hobson conducted a knowledge sharing session on tourism and the students gained new insights in this field.

The School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts hosted a Welcome Luncheon for the 12 exchange students from 6 Universities who started their exchange semester in

August 2012. Truffles Restaurant provided the ideal setting for the student to meet the faculty members and relate their experiences of moving to Malaysia and adjusting into campus life at Taylor’s University. The luncheon was attended by the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Perry Hobson, Dean, Deputy Deans and Programme Directors of the School.

In August 2012, Taylor’s Business School received 17 exchange students from 8 partner Universities. A dinner at Truffles Restaurant provided the exchange students and faculty staff the perfect opportunity to get to know each other better over a sumptuous three-course meal. The camaraderie between the exchange students and the lecturers they have gotten acquainted with over the last few weeks was very much evident during this event.

On 22nd November, Career Services Centre and our invited student leader Chong Saw Jin attended the Awards Night for Malaysia’s Top 100 Leading Graduate Employers,

organized by GTI Media (the publisher of gradmalaysia career publications series). This annual event is the year-end highlight among the nation’s graduate recruiters. Imagine like an Oscar Night for graduate employers!

The top 100 ranking and winners for each sector are determined by votes from students across Malaysia in public and private higher education institutions, and Malaysian students studying abroad (from selected overseas universities). Students participated in an online survey to cast their votes and also to make their voices and choices heard. There are 12 sectors overall. The winners for each sector are PwC (Accounting & Professional Services), Maybank (Banking & Financial Services), ASTRO (Broadcasting & Media), Accenture (Consulting), Great Eastern (Insurance), Pharmaniaga (Pharmaceutical), Petronas (Energy, Oil & Gas, Utilities), Proton (Automotive), Google (ICT & Multimedia), Gamuda (Property & Construction), Telekom Malaysia (Telecommunications), and AirAsia (Leisure, Travel & Hospitality).

At the end of the evening, PwC is declared as Malaysia’s Graduate Employer of the Year 2012, gaining the most votes from the nation’s youth. The full list of the top 100 will be published in the M100 magazine out in March 2013.
