Page 12: INSPIRING THE LOVE OF LEARNING THROUGH THE POWER …

Love and Learn is a monthly programdesigned for children ages three to twelve months and their adult caregivers. The Children’s Discovery Museum has been offering early childhood programs for many years, but only recently started Love andLearn to reach their infant audience.

In 2014, education staff attended theAssociation of Children’s Museum’s InterActivity conference in Phoenix, Arizona where they participated in atwo-part workshop on early childhoodbrain development. After further research into early childhood brain development, the museum was able to establish goals for the program.

The goals were to create a class thatwas a bonding experience between thechild and their caregiver and to intro-duce caregivers to learning experiencesthat promoted brain development. From those two simple starting points,we created a template for a 45- minutesession.

Love and Learn is a mixture of instructor-led activities, beginning with circle timeand a hello song coupled with a quickstory that complements the monthlytopic of the class. Each program sessionthen moves on to center time where infants and their caregivers can explorevarious learning activities through play. Some of those activities include sensoryexperiences, musical instruments, crawling through a tunnel, and playingwith puppets. The class concludes withanother circle time where we play peek-a-boo with a parachute, exploremore with musical instruments, singsongs, and catch bubbles! Throughoutclass, the instructor relays simple, “Didyou know…” messages to parents to inform them of what kind of learningis taking place during that activity. For example, when a baby plays with a rattle, did you know that is introducingcause and effect? Or when you readand/or sing to your baby, did you knowthat is helping them develop their vocabulary?

Most parents seem to instinctively knowhow to engage in activities—pattycake,peek-a-boo, nursery rhyme songs—withtheir babies. But they don’t always knowwhy they’re doing them, or what effectsthey have on an infant’s developing brain.Love and Learn is a fun bonding programfor children and their caregivers. It offersa much-needed chance to get out ofthe house and socialize in a supportiveenvironment with other caregivers. Butthe program operates on a deeper, moreinformed level, providing informationabout brain development along with the usual baby fun. Infants’ moms, dads, grandparents, and caregivers all need to learn things, too.
