EXPERIENCE ‘HOMECOMING’

SCOTLAND

Scotland has always been known for its outstanding natural beauty, warm hospitality and fascinating cultural

heritage, but the country is aiming for bigger and better in 2014.

Building on the success of Homecoming 2009, Scotland will again be holding a yearlong celebration of everything that makes the country great, including mouth-watering food, spectacular arts and crafts events, outdoor activities and wildlife exploration.

The five key themes of Homecoming 2014 are nature, activity, food and drink, ancestry and creativity – you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Nature Boasting the highest peaks in the UK, picturesque forests, and coastlines as far as the eye can see, Scotland’s natural attractions are almost impossible to match. This scenic beauty is the setting for many of

Hollywood’s big blockbusters, including James Bond’s latest outing Skyfall and the award-winning animation Brave.

Scotland’s national parks will be celebrated in 2014 with the John Muir Festival, which will explore the legacy of the Scots-born conservationist and founding father of the world’s first national park system.

Wildlife festivals in Shetland and Orkney mean you can learn more about Scotland’s unique flora and fauna through nature trails, and boat trips along the coast.

activity Sport has always had a special place in the hearts of Scots, but 2014 marks a special year in the country’s sporting history.

The Commonwealth Games will see the world’s best athletes converge on Glasgow, while fans from all corners of the globe come to cheer their nation on.

Golfing fanatics can also rejoice. Scotland will be hosting the Ryder Cup for only the second time ever, as the US and Europe square off for another nail-biting event.

Prefer to take part yourself? Homecoming 2014 is promoting Scotland’s exciting cycling scene, whether you prefer mounting biking or hitting the roads.

There’s also the chance to test yourself against the country’s walking routes, including the new 755km Gore-tex National Trail.

creativityScotland’s creative scene is a vibrant and buzzing environment, with Edinburgh boasting the world’s most prestigious arts festival.

Every August, hundreds of thousands of people flock to the city to enjoy comedy, theatre, dance and music – it’s the perfect showcase for the country’s artistic talent.

On a slightly less grandiose scale – although just as delicious – are Scotland’s farmers’ markets, which present the fi nest local produce from cheeses and game to other artisan delights. The Dundee Flower and Food Festival, Gastrofest and Flavour Fortnight are other Homecoming 2014 events to get your mouth watering.

A DAY TRIP...to Polygon Wood in Ypres is a must for Kiwis keen to learn more about ANZAC involvement in the First World War.

War II, with Normandy the site for the now iconic D-Day beach landings.

The successful operation saw British, American and Canadian troops launch direct attacks on German troops from the west, while the Russians advanced from the east.

D-Day is often considered the tipping point of WWII, forcing Adolf Hitler to fi ght an unwinnable war on two fronts. Within 11 months the war was over.

No Kiwi ground troops landed in Normandy, but they played an important part in providing air and naval support for the operation.

June the 6th 2014 marks the 70th anniversary of this gripping battle, so why not trace the footsteps of those brave soldiers?

By visiting Dunkirk, Bayeux and the Normandy beaches, it’s almost impossible not to appreciate the sacrifi ces made by those who lost their lives fi ghting in the war.

LOIRE VALLEY: The Land Of Kings

Located along the middle stretch of the river Loire, the region became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, and is the biggest in France.

If that doesn’t convince you of the Loire Valley’s unique qualities, the fact that it was home to generations of French kings who were captivated by its beauty should give you an idea of how spellbinding the region is.

These monarchs have left their mark here in the form of spectacular châteaux, from medieval fortresses to Renaissance castles. Each château has its own fascinating history and some have been converted into charming hotels so you can know how it feels to live like a king!

One of the most impressive châteaux is Chenonceau in Indre-et-Loire, which is built across the Cher River in an amazing feat of architectural brilliance. This truly exceptional site has mesmerising gardens, a magnifi cent art gallery

with paintings by the great masters and remarkable Flemish tapestries.

But there’s more to the Loire Valley than its castles, particularly if you are a foodie. The Valley is one of the biggest wine-growing regions in France, with its fertile soil providing a delectable variety of fl avours for wine lovers of all palates. Tasty fresh fi sh, goats cheese and other local produce are easy to fi nd, while a large selection of gourmet restaurants are available for those who prefer dining out.

If you want to work up an appetite fi rst, the Loire Valley is a very popular cycling location and features in the Tour de France every year.

The Loire a Velo trail includes 800km of cycle routes that will take you through some of the valley’s most eye-catching gardens, vineyards and châteaux.

EURODRIVE STORY

I have been driving the Renault Mégane Coupé for three European summers now. The principal thing about Eurodrive is that the whole process is just so simple – they give you clear, easy instructions.

When you get to the airport, the contact telephone for the car is exactly where they say it is, the man is sitting in the van to take you to the car lot and you drive away as if you’re in your own car!

In June I drove from Uzès to Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Basque Country to host my culinary tour there – a six hour trip, made zippy and joyful by the Mégane.

There are a few new technical things in the car which make long distance driving even sexier – it tells you if you are lane drifting; the lights go on automatically if it starts getting dark and the windscreen wipers go on automatically with a drop of rain. I take the car to visit the organic markets in my area and can fi t lots in the boot like sunfl owers, rosé, strawberries and cured hams.

Dropping it off at the end is easy and stress free. You just call the drop off people in advance, turn up with the help of TomTom, hand over the papers and they drive you to the train station. Always with a smile and enquiries as to your happiness level with the car, France and life in general.

Au revoir et à la prochaine!

Italy is the birthplace of the Renaissance, having offered up a legacy of art, music, poetry and architecture that is almost unparalleled worldwide.

The people of Italy are equally as unique as the country itself – passionate and gregarious, fun-loving and friendly, and always dedicated to family.

Rome, Florence and Venice are abuzz with the daily hustle and bustle of inner-city tourism, but the Italian countryside offers a beautiful escape for those who prefer a quieter pace of life.

Here, life slows down a little – even outside of siesta time. Take time to savour a new local wine, linger over a tantalising lunch whilst overlooking the olive trees and stroll through the delightful cobblestone villages to really get into life as the locals do.

The Maremma region of southern Tuscany is a particular treat, with charming seaside towns such as Porto Ercole and Porto San Stefano, as well as medieval gems like Massa Marittima. Ensure you slow to a stop when you reach Etruscan treasures like Pitigliano, a speck of a city superbly squeezed onto a narrow, rocky ridge.

The magnifi cent Italian Lakes District in the north is a fabulous place to start. This natural wonder is nestled under the awe-inspiring Dolomites mountain range amongst the Italian Alps, which are widely regarded as being among the most attractive mountain landscapes in the world.

A great diversity of colours is provided by the contrasts between the bare pale-coloured rock surfaces, and the forests and meadows below.

Also nestled at the foot of the Alps are Lake Como, Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore which all offer breathtaking panoramic views, showing a piece of Italy that you’re unlikely to see anywhere else.

Household names such as George Clooney and Marlon Brando have graced the shores here, making it a popular spot for the rich and famous and just perfect for the rest of us to star-gaze! Sip wine, stroll beside the palazzi of the rich and famous and share the high-fl yers’ million-dollar views.

Further south, Tuscany is on the bucket list of

many due to it being everyone’s idea of idyllic Italy. Cypresses and sunfl owers, terracotta roofs, delicious regional wines, olive oil and rustic farmhouse produce will leave you absolutely content with a bellyful of goodness.

And even further south – continuing past Naples – lies a coastline of dramatic cliffs, precariously perched fi shing villages and the ever-present shimmering Mediterranean. This is the stunning Amalfi Coast, which has been enticing visitors for decades to its tiny beaches and chic resort towns such as Sorrento and Positano and its island of Capri. It is here where you can kick back, relax and enjoy the heady views while you sip on chilled Limoncello – the golden treasure of Amalfi and referred to as ‘sunshine wine’ by the locals.

Head to the heel of Italy in the south where you’ll fi nd the unique and intriguing trulli houses. These are limestone dwellings unique to the region of Puglia, which look like a dry stone hut with a conical roof. These extraordinary buildings derive from prehistoric construction techniques that have survived fully intact and are still functioning into the modern world as housing for the locals – truly remarkable.

Pounded by the Atlantic Sea and bordering the Pyrenees, Northwest Spain enjoys an oceanic climate that makes it seem like a different

country altogether.

Nicknamed ‘Green Spain’ because of its lush landscapes, the region is quickly becoming a favourite with tourists from all around the world who relish its outstanding natural beauty, gorgeous cuisine and compelling history.

There was a time when Santiago de Compestela, the capital of Galicia in Northwest Spain, attracted thousands of pilgrims who came to view the tomb of St James the Apostle. Today it remains a popular religious site, and the 800km Way of Saint James offers a fantastic opportunity to recreate the journey as a contemporary traveller.

This major Christian pilgrimage route can be tackled in sections. For some this can be a spiritual experience as it is very rustic. The trek is over hilly terrain so you do need a good level of fi tness to head off the beaten track.

If you’re more of a foodie than a history buff, then you won’t feel alone in the north of Spain, as the Basque countryside is renowned for its cuisine. The locals spend twice as much on food than anywhere else in the country – meals form the cornerstone of Basque social events.

Try the region’s famous pinxtos – miniature pieces of haute cuisine that are available in bars and restaurants up and down the region. You won’t be disappointed!

The pinxtos bars crowd the narrow and noisy streets of the historical capital of San Sebastian – a vibrant coastal location also fi lled with loads of seafood restaurants.

It also boasts some fantastic designer clothes shops, many of them being surf labels as the region has some of the best surf beaches in the whole of Spain.

SPAIN

Spain is known all around the world for its sun-kissed beaches, sangria and bullfi ghting, but if you go further afi eld there are even more

unique experiences to be had.

There’s no destination quite as sumptuous and sensational as Europe, host to a number of countries perfect for your next getaway. Trying to see them all, or as many as you can, during your trip? Trade in all the fuss of trains and

planes for something more luxurious – like a cruise.

A cruise offers you the ultimate hassle-free holiday and is the perfect way to get around Europe. Everything is organised for you and most costs are included in the fare, so all you need to do is sit back, relax and take in

that sparkling Mediterranean Sea and dream of the excitement that awaits you at the next port.

Cruises offer a fantastic selection of dining, entertainment and activities, so while you’re sailing between the jewels in Europe’s crown, you’ll never be short of things to do – that is, if you decide you need a break from lounging poolside!

yourself completely to the Mediterranean way of life.

Some of the most idyllic destinations across the Med will be your ports of call. Do you yearn for a lover’s tryst in France, perhaps on the shores of Saint Tropez or through the never-ending lavender fi elds of Provence?

Wake up with Italy right outside your window, starting with the port of Livorno, the gateway to Florence, Pisa and Tuscany, one region to delight the senses. Creamy, delectable dishes of pasta and full-bodied wines await you beyond every rolling hill.

There is no sight quite like Portofi no on the Amalfi Coast, a magical hillside village dotted with vibrant coloured buildings.

Take a romantic ride on a gondola through the canals of incomparable Venice, where you can delightfully discover quaint cobbled laneways and visit the

awe-inspiring St Mark’s Basilica with its glittering golden mosaics and vast array of frescoes.

Cruises in Europe can also take you through the magical white-washed Greek Islands where you will marvel at the ancient allure and picturesque bays of Lesbos, Ephesus, Santorini and Argostoli.

In the evenings, there’s nothing like watching a bewitching island sunset sink down the horizon. All this and more awaits you in the mesmerizing Mediterranean aboard your impressive cruise liner from sun-up to sun-down.

scaNdiNavia’s Best kePt secretsScandinavia exudes style and sophistication. Boasting exceptional natural beauty paired with progressive culture and fascinating history, each stop along the Baltic offers an unforgettable experience.

Copenhagen’s bright colours, canals and buoyant spirit make it a must-see on your Scandinavian itinerary. Immortalise your experience with a photo by the famous Little Mermaid statue, a celebration of Dane Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale.

In Norway, Oslo brings together the past and the future seamlessly, with medieval buildings and ultra-modern architecture side by side. This city is known for its quality of life, innovation and history, and is exceptionally visitor-friendly.

Sweden oozes refi nement and an air of luxury, and Stockholm and Gothenburg are two of its most magnifi cent cities. In Stockholm, gorgeous pastel coloured buildings complement the smorgasbord of emerald-green parks and small islands peppered through its tranquil waterways. In summer, you’ll fi nd each little shore dotted with sunbathers and the water fi lled with smiling pleasure boaters.

Gothenburg is similar to Stockholm, but with more of a rustic lure.

No Scandinavian journey is complete without a trip to Berlin from the Warnemunde port. This high-energy city needs no introduction with its abundance of history and attractions.

Tallinn may be a lesser-known destination, but to the surprise of many, the Estonian city is a total gem. Head to the ‘Old Town’ and enjoy the medieval charm of piazzas and churches, as well as bustling markets, bright, bold colours and friendly locals. Stroll through its intimate lanes and you’ll feel like you’re in a fairy tale.

Where does one start with St Petersburg? This Russian city has so many spectacular features. Dazzling palaces and their expansive, opulent gardens stand in contrast to the remnants of a Soviet past.

The Winter Palace must be seen for its eerie history as the scene of the 1095 Bloody Sunday massacre and now an impressive Hermitage art gallery. Catherine’s Palace, just a short way out of the city, is absolutely awe-inspiring, as is Peterhof’s Palace with its impressive gardens, fountains and golden statues.

Helsinki, Finland, is another destination that strikes the perfect balance of old and new. While there is plenty to entertain the senses in the sleek, refi ned city, you might like to head to some of the small islands nearby. One, Seurasaari, is an open air museum showcasing Finnish country life dating back to the 18th century.

Of course, this is just a taste of some of the destinations you can visit on a European cruise. Get inspired and prepare to sail off blissfully into the sunset.
