Sun-Tzu(554-496 BC)

Circa 500 BC. Little is known about the man,

himself, but his handbook on warfare is still regarded as being highly applicable in this day and age, not only to the general in the war room, but the businessman in the board room.

“Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.”

In other words, always have a plan of action before you thrive to accomplish your goals, otherwise you are simply asking for failure.

CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE(1564-1593)

• Circa 1590.• His tragedy, The Jew of Malta, tells the

story of Barabbas, a Jew who seeks murderous revenge against the civil authorities of Malta, who sought to seize away all that he had worked so long for in his life to obtain. In the end of the affair, Barabbas meets his own death at the hands of the very authorities he had sought vengeance against.

• “I count religion but a childish toy and hold no sin but ignorance.”

• To keep oneself in ignorance stunts ones growth as a person towards being a better human being.

30 September, 1787.What words can truly express the nature of this great Virginian, who was a governor, a president, the writer of The Declaration of Independence, the builder of Monticello, and so many other things. He was a true

renaissance man.“I hold it, that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as necessary in

the political world as storms in the physical.”

The status quo is never always right about anything. Sometimes one must stand up for

what one believes in. Otherwise, what rights that you have, may simply disappear.

PRESIDENT THOMAS JEFFERSON(1743-1826)

• 26 September, 1797.

• Perhaps one of the most powerful leaders of his age—and any age—Napoleon I nearly brought the whole of Europe to its knees. It took all the free nations of Europe over ten years to decisively defeat him. He was truly a great warrior indeed.

• “All great events hang by a hair. The man of ability takes advantage of everything and neglects nothing that can give him a chance of success; whilst the less able man sometimes loses everything by neglecting a single one of those chances.”

• To put it simply, if you wishes to be victorious in your career, one must always keep your eyes and ears open for any opportunity that bring you one step closer to accomplishing whatever goal you have before you.

EMPEROR NAPOLEON I(1769-1821)

General Carl von Clausewitz(1780-1831) 1832 (The publication was published

posthumously). Best known for his work, Vom Kriege, which

translates into English, as On War, it is one of the foremost text on warfare from his day until the dark days of World War I, offering clear explanations in battle tactics and strategy. It also gave a clear definition of what war is.

“War is not merely a political act, but also a real political instrument, a continuation of political commerce, a carrying out of the same by other means.”

Whenever one engages in a conflict, physical or otherwise, one must give that conflict a purpose. The “war” must not go on forever. Once the goal of the conflict is obtained, the war can then come to an end. Without an objective, one may wander aimlessly achieving nothing.

President Abraham Lincoln(1809-1865) 10 July, 1848. In a letter to his law partner and

future biographer, William Herndon, Lincoln wrote some words of wisdom.

“The way for a young man to rise, is to improve himself every way that he can, never suspecting that any body wishes to hinder him.”

I see these words as stating that all of us here upon this earth, if we seek a better life for ourselves, then we must always be on the path of improvement.

Friedrich Nietzsche(1844-1900)

1884. Nietzsche was always a man of controversy in

his writings, amongst the intellectuals of his day. This was especially true in what is considered now to be his masterpiece, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, in which his doctrine of “the superman” is found.

“You look up when you long for elevation. And I look down because I am elevated. Who amongst you can laugh and be elevated at the same time? Whoever climbs on the highest mountains laughs at all tragic plays and seriousness.”

When one has become the person that you want to be, when you have truly become more than what the world thinks you can be, nothing of the world is important anymore. In my opinion, It is better to be on the top looking down in triumph, than it is to be on the bottom looking up in envy.

General George S. Patton(1885-1945)

• 31 May, 1944.• Patton gave a speech to the US Third

Army a few days prior to Operation Overlord, better known to history as D-Day. Here is his now famous opening line:

• “No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. You won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.”

• This quote basically reminds me that my success is built upon me not failing in whatever my mission may be. For me to succeed fully in life, others must fail.

Anne Marie Frank(1929-1945) 15 July, 1944. Hers is truly the story of a life cut short… What

could have been a long and illustrious career of an aspiring writer, ended slowly but surely within the walls of a concentration camp during World War II, simply for being a Jew… She wrote several short stories while she and her family and friends were in hiding, but her most famous work is her diary, which was later adapted into a play and later a movie. Her story of trying to survive in the face of persecution is an inspiration indeed.

“And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more. In the meantime, I must hold on to my ideals.”

Even in times of adversity, we must stay strong. No matter how bad things may get in our lives, things shall get better. No matter how long it may take—days, weeks, months, years, or decades—things shall get better. And if we hold true to ourselves, we shall never be disappointed in what we do.

20 January, 1961. Next to George Washington and Abraham

Lincoln, JFK is perhaps one of the most popular presidents of all time. Had he not been assassinated that cold day in Dallas in 1963, who knows what he could have accomplished in his second term.

“The energy, the faith, the devotion that we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it - and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.”

This is something that I think many people have lost. They ask and expect to be given, instead of trying to earn it themselves. I do not think that Jack would be proud of the current condition of this country. This is not the glorious future of American Excellence that he had envisioned.

President John F. Kennedy(1917-1963)
