An assembly consisting of chain or chains

joined to upper and lower terminals suitable

according to the requirements of this

European Standard for attaching loads to

the hook of a crane or other lifting machine.

    CHAIN SLING:-

    TERMINOLOGY:-

Master Link :- A link forming the upper terminal of a chain by means

of which the sling is attached to the hook of a crane.

Length Of A Leg :- For a finished sling, the length from the lower

bearing point of the lower terminal to the upper bearing pointof the upper terminal.

Intermediate Master Link :- A link used to connect one or two legs

of a sling to a master link.

Lower Terminal :- A link, hook or other device fitted at the end of aleg of a sling, remote from the master link or upper terminal.

Mechanical Joining Device :- A means of connection which does not

    depend on welding.

Joining Link :- A welded link fitted to the end of a chain to connect

it either directly or through an intermediate link to an upper orlower terminal or intermediate master link, or in the case of an

endless slug to the other end of the chain.

Intermediate Link :- A welded link used to form a connection

between the terminal and the joining link fitted to the chain.

Sections Of Slings To Which M.P.F. Is Applied

  • 8/10/2019 Inspection of Chain Slings

    10/30

    1) The chain should articulate freely.

    2) The maximum permissible wear is 8% reduction in material

diameter for the chain, components and fittings.

    3) The max. elongation, mainly due to seating and interlink wear, is 5%.

    4) Unless the sling is specifically designed otherwise, the legs of multi-

leg slings should be of equal length so that the seat of hooks, or

bearing point of other fittings, is equal. This is an important matter to

check, particularly if a leg of chain has been replaced, as the pitchmay vary from the original grade and type of sling.

    VISUAL INSPECTION

  • 8/10/2019 Inspection of Chain Slings

    11/30

    5) There should be no signs of bending, twisting or other distortion tothe chain, master link or other fittings. Particular attention is

necessary at the point of choke.

    6) There should be no signs of nicks, cracks, corrosion or chemical

    attack.

    7) Hooks should show no signs of opening or of distortion and, where

fitted, safety catches should be undamaged and operate freely.

    8) Marking should be clear and legible; it must give all of thenecessary information for the particular.
