2013 is not merely a new year, but more importantly, a new chapter for all of us.

I see 2013 as a year of new ventures, new challenges, stronger team spirit and new victories. In short, 2013 is about CHARTING NEW FRONTIERS.

Q1 was indeed an exciting time. We launched our iconic Bintulu Paragon integrated development, the largest integrated development ever undertaken by our group. This landmark development sets a benchmark not only for Bintulu, but also for Sarawak, as it will introduce new development concepts to this part of the world. The launch was a resounding success and we have not looked back since. Those involved have worked very hard to make things happen – once again, we have proven that we are able to rise to the challenges and win.

In pursuant of our triple bottom line, we have also intensified our corporate sustainability programmes. For Q1, our efforts were aligned to areas such as sports and community, all of which aimed to contribute towards nation building, whilst making a positive impact to target beneficiaries within the community. Our heartiest congratulations to Nerosha

Keligit, a Naim sponsored athlete who has made Sarawak proud with her achievements in bowling.

In this edition of ‘Insight’, we have also featured how a local Iban boy climbed up the corporate ladder and made his mark in a highly specialised area of construction of dams. We are very proud of our homegrown dam specialist, Jeffery Dickson Sandom, Naim’s Project Manager and we look forward to many such success stories in time to come.

Naim participated in a two-day charity treasure hunt organised by TA Research. Proceeds collected from the entry fees went to TA’s CSR Fundraising Drive and channelled to the needy through the TA Foundation. The treasure hunt was kicked off at KL and ended at Genting Highlands.

Naim contributed RM20,000 to the Ex-Police Association of Malaysia’s (Sarawak) Welfare and Education Fund to assist them in carrying out their activities. The said Association has been

entrusted to oversee the welfare of its members and their families. Naim has been a consistent contributor to the Association over the years.

It was a gruelling but fun time, with all participants feted to a nice dinner at the Resorts World Hotel, Genting, courtesy of TA Securities Holdings Bhd.

Naim staff participated in the divisional level ‘My Beautiful Malaysia’ programme organized by 1M4U in conjunction with the Year of Volunteerism 2013. The said event was launched by Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Malaysia, YB Dato Sri Peter Chin at Padang Majlis Bandaraya Miri, Miri, Sarawak.

The programme was launched to instill a sense of social responsibility and the spirit of volunteerism among youths, with the hope that youths can be actively involved in the development of the nation. Naim staff participated in the ‘gotong-royong’ activities organized in conjunction with the said launch.

Naim sponsored a state tenpin bowler, Nerosha Keligit to compete in State and national level competitions – Naim also sponsored Nerosha in 2012.

The 17-year old has blazed a trail in bowling – she won the Sarawak Closed Championship in February 2013. In March 2013, she joined the national youth bowling selection in KL and finished top among the girls – she was the Sarawakian girl to have landed a spot on the Malaysian Youth Team.

CelebratingTheSuccessofMalaysianWomen:1 Million Women & Family Purple Walk17th March 2013

Naim staff joined thousands of other participants converging at Le Park, Jalan Budaya for the first-ever 1 Million Women and Family Purple Walk 2013. It was estimated that some 57,000 women in Kuching, Sibu and Miri joined the walk, which was launched simultaneously nationwide. The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak launched the event at Putrajaya

The said event was organised in conjunction with the International Women’s Day. The main purpose of the walk is to show solidarity towards the Government's commitment in empowering women in Malaysia and to celebrate the successes of Malaysian women in various sectors.

PromotingTheArtOfVideoProduction:Naim Land – Curtin Sarawak Short Video CompetitionJanuary – April 2013

Naim Land Sdn Bhd and Curtin University Sarawak jointly organized a short video competition as a means to promote high-rise apartment and condominium living, expose the public to the art of video production and produce compelling marketing messages through digital means and provide an exciting platform for local talents to demonstrate their talent and creativity.

Naim Land’s General Manager (Miri Operations), Michael Ting and Curtin Sarawak’s Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Yudi Samyudia launched the joint community project on 18th January 2013. Themed ‘My Dream High-rise Home,’ the competition is open to Malaysian residents and runs until 15th April 2013.

The top three prizes are RM2,000, RM1,000 and RM500, and there are awards for People’s Choice, Best Script, Best Actor or Actress and Best Director. In addition to cash prizes, the winners will receive trophies and certificates of participation.

‘Home&Away’Friendly Badminton Match17th February & 3rd March 2013

Naim had a ‘home & away’ friendly badminton match with another local corporation, the Samling Group. The matches were held at Samling Worker’s Camp, Kuala Baram and Dato Permaisuiri Multi Purpose Hall, Miri respectively.

The Samling team proved its superiority when they won both matches.

In conjunction with the Chinese New Year 2013, Naim HQ and Naim Miri organised their open houses at the Rock Commercial Centre office, Kuching and Pine double storey semi detached show house in Desa Bahagia, Bandar Baru Permyjaya, Miri respectively.

Naim staff attended the ‘Reaching the Star’ appreciation night/dinner organised by the Samarahan District Council at the Grand Magherita Hotel, Kuching. The said event was organised to thank developers, contractors and suppliers who had been dealing with the Council and to promote good camaraderie among all concerned.

A multimedia presentation was given during the dinner, disclosing some of the upcoming projects for the district. The Council also informed that it was on track to achieve the status of municipality soon.

A total of 12 Naim staff attended a training session on property investment and assets management by the Property Facility Services Lte. Naim Ang Pow Promotion 20131st January 2013 – 28th February 2013

Naim Land launched its two-month long Ang Pow Promotion 2013 on 1st January 2013.

Under the said promotion, purchasers of selected property in Desa Pujut and Desa Bahagia were entitled to free legal fees on the sales and purchase agreement and electrical cash voucher worth RM3,000.

FEATURES

Q: Can you tell us about yourself?

Jeffery: I’m an Iban from Sg. Mujok, Julau. I went to SRK Ng. Maong Julau for my primary school and later went to Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Hj Bujang, Miri. I graduated with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from University of Malaya in 1997.

Upon completion of my studies, I worked as a Site Engineer in Klang and was involved in high rise condominium construction.

In 2003 to 2005, I worked as a Project Manager for 46km coastal road projects from Pusa to Sesang in Seratok. I was also involved in drainage and irrigation, schools, residential, police facilities and marine base projects in Sarawak.

I joined Naim as a Construction Manager for the Bengoh Dam project in 2007 and was promoted to Project Manager in 2012.

Q: Can you share with us your experiences in undertaking the project?

Jeffery: There are few ways to achieve the projects’ goals but most importantly is the ability to plan ahead and identify the risk that may affect your implementation. The ability to adjust to the changes throughout any project period is equally important plus, of course the teamwork.

Q: Before, we only heard that most big projects of this nature would be led by foreigners. But now a local person has been given the chance to do it. So can you tell us whether the challenge would spur you to be more confident in doing bigger jobs in the future?

Jeffery: In my early working days, I never dreamt that one day, I would be involved in building a dam. Even during my study years, I never thought seriously about doing any dam construction. As such, I’m very fortunate to work for Naim for the Bengoh Dam construction. Although I have little knowledge of dam construction at that time, my willingness to learn and the support from my superiors and colleagues have made me strive to ensure the success of the Bengoh Dam construction.

Given the chance to lead this project was an honour for me. I must thank also all the parties involved such as our client JKR Sarawak, our consultant, KTA Sarawak Sdn. Bhd, all sub-contractors especially Sino-hydro Corporation Malaysia Sdn. Bhd, the suppliers, the government agencies, the local people and last but not least the dedicated NAIM team.

Now, having the experience and knowledge of this vast and complicated project, I’m confident and ready to undertake any similar projects in future.

THE BENGOH DAMSUCCESS STORY

The Bengoh Dam project is actually a success story of a Sarawakian who has been able to take the task of developing a specialised project

that would normally be given to foreigners to take the lead.

An Interview with Jeffery Dickson Sandom

However, with the Bengoh Dam project, a local engineer, Jeffery Dickson Sandom, an Iban from Julau has carved a name for himself in this project that will benefit Sarawakians residing in Kuching and Kota Samarahan in the years to come.

The following are excerpts of the interview with Jeffery.

FEATURES

Generally, to complete projects on time, it should start with sound planning and the plan must be strictly followed. We must also be able to anticipate any risk throughout the construction cycle. The dedication, positive attitude and teamwork are also important. We must be able to adapt to any changes if required and also to adopt new technology and approaches. Q: What about the quality of work of the dam, say for instance how long will it last and its safety aspects and features, etc?

Jeffery: The Bengoh Dam is a Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) gravity dam with a height of 63 metre. It is the first of its kind in Sarawak and second in Malaysia after Kinta Dam in Perak to use this technology.

In other words, although RCC is not a new method for dam construction, it was new in our country. The third dam in Malaysia to use this method was the Murum HEP Dam. We were very fortunate that our specialist dam sub-contractor, Sino-hydro Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd from China, was one of the leading RCC dam constractors in the world.

They were involved in the RCC dam construction around the world. Working together with them was very tough especially the language barrier, but our team manage to put our efforts together and successfully completed the task.

Works in relation to the dam’s foundation excavation, foundation grouting, river diversion, dam body to the completion were smoothly carried out. The construction the team worked 24 hours almost throughout the project.

The dam was built to design specifications. All aspects relating to the design, safety, construction and post-construction were monitored closely.

Our consultant, KTA Sarawak Sdn. Bhd. (with collaboration with Halcrow from UK) had a full team on site to ensure that quality was met with the specs. Beside that, the client, JKR Sarawak appointed their own peer review consultant led by a dam specialist from the UK to audit the construction on regular basis. Based on this peer review comments, our dam QAQC was amongst the best in the dam construction so far.

As for the dam safety, monitoring equipment has been installed in the dam body to monitor the dam safety.

Amongst the instruments were vertical pendulum, seepage weir, piezometers, survey station, crack meters, thermometers etc. Besides that, the SCADA system will be installed to synchronize the operation with Batu Kitang Water Treatment Plant.

When the dam is operational, it will be operated by trained personnel and dam safety audit and inspections will be carried in regular basis. An Emergency Response Plan has been designed and will be implemented where required.

Dam safety-related issues have been taken into consideration seriously and carefully.

Q: Is the dam purely for water catchment area or could it be tapped for electricity?

Jeffery: The dam is designed for water catchment for Kuching and its surrounding areas, but there are studies that had been carried out on the power generation from this dam. It can produce about 4.5 MW of electricity and this can still be incorporated into the dam.

Q: Any words of advice to readers?

Jeffery: Never be afraid to learn new things and never be afraid to fail. You must believe that you can do it, and do it to the best you can. Success comes to those who dare to believe and persevere.
