Meanwhile,Ko-KolearnsthathispostistobeabolishedbytheMikadofornon-performanceofduty.HissearchforavictimisinterruptedbytheappearanceofthedespondentNanki-Poobentonsuicide.ThetwomenstrikeadealthatNanki-PoomaymarryYum-Yum,ifhewillagreetobecomeKo-Ko’sfirstvictimattheendofamonth.

ThegeneralrejoicingthatfollowsthisannouncementishaltedbythearrivalofKatisha,anelderlyladyoftheMikado’scourt.ThwartedinhereffortstoclaimNanki-Pooasherlover,sheattemptstorevealhistrueidentity,buttheentiretownshoutsherdownastheactends.

ActIIfindsYum-YumandNanki-Poopreparingfortheirwedding.ButKo-Koproducesasurprise—“bytheMikado’slaw,whenamarriedmanisbeheaded,hiswifeisburiedalive!”Yum-YumishavingsecondthoughtswhentheapproachoftheMikadohimselfisannounced.

Ko-Kopanicsanddecidesthatadeadbodywillnotbeneedediftheproperpapersareproduced.HesendsNanki-PooawaytomarryYum-Yumandpreparesa“certificate”ofNanki-Poo’sexecution.

TheMikadoarrivesintown,accompaniedbyKatisha,andisdelightedtoreceivethenewsthattherehasbeenanexecutionuntilheseesthenameofthevictim.Ko-KonowlearnsforthefirsttimethatNanki-PooisthesonoftheMikado.AlongwithPooh-BahandPitti-Sing,whohaveactedaswitnessestothefakeexecution,Ko-Koissentencedtobeboiledinoilfor“compassingthedeathoftheHeirApparent.”

Whenits132-yearhistoryistakenintoaccount,The Mikadoisundoubtedlythemostpopularpieceofmusicaltheatreofalltime.Fordecades,aproductionofG&S’ssatiricaloperacouldbeseensomewhereintheEnglish-speakingworldeverydayoftheyear.Itslibrettohasfounditswayintoourlanguagewithexpressionssuchasthe“grandPooh-Bah”and“Letthepunishmentfitthecrime.”Severalfilmshavebeenmadeoforaboutthework,includingMikeLeigh’s1999filmTopsy-Turvy,whichpresentedanintimateportraitofthecharactersofSirW.S.Gilbert,SirArthurSullivan,andtherepertorycastoftheoriginalD’OylyCarteOperaCompanyfollowingG&S’sinspirationanddevelopmentoftheveryfirstMikadoproduction.

Recently,agreatdealofcontroversyhasarisenaroundThe MikadoinNewYorkandinothercitiesacrosstheUSIn2015,whentheAsian-Americancommunityraisedconcernsoverrepresentationandcasting,NYGASPlistenedforasimplereason–itwastherightthingtodo.Webelievedthat,withthenecessarytimeandeffort,wecoulddevelopanewwaytopresentThe Mikado,onethatperformersandaudiencesfromallbackgroundswouldenjoy.

Wealsoknewwehadtomaintaintheartisticintegrityofthepiece.Somelife-longfansofGilbertandSullivanexpressedconcernsaboutlosingaclassicpartoftheG&Srepertoire,orsufferingchangestoThe Mikadothatwouldrenderthecomicoperaunrecognizable.NYGASPworkedwithAsian-Americanartsleaderstobuildaninclusivecastandcreativeteam,andtoinstitutenewperformancepracticesforthecurrentproduction–allwhilestrivingtoupholdThe Mikado’scharacters,storytelling,themes,andmostofall,itsuniversalsatireofhumannature.

OscarWilde,acontemporaryofGilbert’sandafanofG&S,wrotethat“LifeimitatesArtfarmorethanArtimitatesLife”(TheDecayofLying).WhenitcomestoThe Mikadoandtheworldwearelivingintoday,itseemsWilde’sproclamationisproventrue.ImbeddedinthecontroversyisaquintessentialGilbertianirony–presentingThe Mikadoprovidesastageforexploringthebroaderissuesofrace,equity,diversity,andinclusioninourworld.Wearealltooawarethatourpoliticsaretoooftendominatedbypolarizedidentitiesandideologiesthattemptustohunkerdowninsocialmedia-fueledtrenchesfilledwithlike-mindedacquaintanceswhoonlyreinforceourthinking.

Insteadofsuccumbingtothistemptation,NYGASPreachedouttonewcolleaguesfromdiversebackgroundstodeviseasolutionworthyofthechallengebeforeus.Ourcostumes,choreography,anddirectionarecompletelyoriginal–unrestrictedbythetraditionsofpastperformancepractice.Mostimportantly,therepresentationoflifeonstageisnolongeradepictionofJapanesepeople,butratherafantasticalportraitofVictoriansinadreamworldthatisinspiredbytheJapaneseculturecaptivatingEnglandatthetimeofThe Mikado’screation.

Whilewecan’tspeakforothers,thoseinvolvedinoureffortshaveagreedthatthewrittenlibrettorequiredverylittlerevision.TherearemomentsthatclearlyshowGilbertwasamanofthe19thcenturywithphrases,forexample,thatmakecommentsabout“Japaneseattitudes.”Consequently,weareinstitutingrevisionstothosereferencesarepartofthenewperformancepractice.

Ourcompanyhasalso,foritsentirehistory,firmlyheldthebeliefthatmoderntopicalreferencesareappropriatetomaketheaudience’sexperienceasimmediateasitwasfortheaudiencesofthe19thcentury.LondonerswouldhaveunderstoodmanyofGilbert’sreferencestopopularfiguresandplacesofthetime.Webelievethattheatreisalivingmediumandthatjudiciousrevisionsareappropriate,whethertheybeforreasonsofentertainment,understanding,orchangingculturalsensibilities.

“Shadowland:TheNewAdventure”usesexplorationofmixedmediatotellalovestoryabouttwopeopleandtheirquixoticquesttosaveanimaginarybird.Employinganimation,video,andshadow-theater,thismadcapadventuredipsitstoeintothegenresofsciencefiction,filmnoir,andromanticcomedy.“TheNewAdventure”hastouredtheglobebuthasrarelybeenseenintheUS,makingthisaspecialtreatforlocalaudiences.

QUINCYELLIS(Dancer)wasborninWaterville,Maine,andspenthisyouthingymnasticsandfigureskating.HeearnedaBFAinactingfromEmersonCollege,andfornineyears,hasworkedasbothanactoranddancerinNewYorkCity.HehasworkedwithcompaniessuchasTheMoveShop,CaliinceDance,DeFunesDance,andTheatreRaleighamongothers.Quincyhasalsobeenluckyenoughtotourandteachinternationally,bothasadancerandactor.Hisownwork,“Savor,”wasrecentlyproducedinNewYorkCity.He’sthrilledtojointhecastof“Shadowland”andisincrediblyhonoredtobeworkingwithPilobolus.

HEATHERFAVRETTO(Dancer/DanceCaptain)grewupinNewJerseywhereherhyperactivityasachilddroveherparentstoplaceherindanceclasses.Yearslater,shereceivedherBFAindancefromRutgersUniversityandwasawardedtheDanceExpressHonorforoutstandingchoreography.Upongraduation,sheworkedforDouglasDunnandDancers,CleoMackDanceProject,andNaganumaDance,whileproducingherownworkinandaroundNYC.ShejoinedPilobolusin2010toworkonamusicaladaptationofJames and the Giant PeachwithAcademyAward-winningcomposersPasekandPaul.ShehassincehelpedcreatenumerousworkswithPilobolusanditscollaborators.Shehashadthepleasureandhonorofperforminginmorethan30countries,aswellason“TheLateShowwithStephenColbert”and“TheTodayShowwithKathieLeeandHoda!”Itcontinuestobeawildride,andHeatheristrulyelatedtobesharingherloveofartandtheatrewithallofyoutonight!

ofsmashhitsandsold-outperformancesthroughouttheworld.

ThehistoryofTheTemptationsisthehistoryofcontemporaryAmericanpop.AnessentialcomponentoftheoriginalMotownmachine,TheTemptationsbegantheirmusicallifeinDetroitintheearly‘60s.However,itwasn’tuntil1964’s“TheWayYouDotheThingsYouDo,”writtenandproducedbySmokeyRobinson,turnedthemintostars.Anavalancheofhitsfollowed—“MyGirl,”“It’sGrowing,”“SinceILostMyBaby,”“GetReady,”“Ain’tTooProudtoBeg,”“BeautyIsonlySkinDeep,”and“IWishItWouldRain.”

Aboveandbeyondtheirfabulousvocals,theclassiclineupofOtisWilliams,MelvinFranklin,PaulWilliams,EddieKendricks,andDavidRuffin,becameknownfortheirsmooth-steppingandflawlesspresentations.“TheTemptationsWalk”becameastapleofAmericanstyle.

Whenthe‘60sand‘70sturnedpolitical,TheTemptationschangedtheirtone,dress,andmusicwithproducerNormanWhitfieldleadingtheway.HisTemptationshits,manyfeaturingDennisEdwardswhohadreplacedDavidRuffin,burnedwithintensity—“RunawayChild,”“CloudNine,”“ICan’tGetNexttoYou,”“PapaWasaRollingStone,”and“PsychedelicShack.”

LarryBraggsispassionate,powerful,andveryspiritual.Thesearealsotheattributesoftheamazingvoiceofthistwo-timeGrammy-nominatedartist.Cutfromthesameclothassomeoftheworld’sgreatestvocalists,Larryhasoneofthemostnotablevoicesinthebusiness.Withavocalrangeofmorethanthreeoctavesandacommandofthestagelikenoother,Larryhasbecomeoneofthemostelectrifyingentertainersontour.Thishasgainedhimtherespectandpraiseofhispeersandfansallovertheworld.

legendaryUstadAllarakha,begantheirbiennialappearancesin1996toprovideaplatformforrarelyheardrhythmtraditionsfromIndia.Overtime,theensemblehasexpandedtoincludegreatdrummersandpercussionistsfrommanyworldtraditions,includingjazzandtheoccasionalstringedinstrument.
