Message From Our New Health Director:

Hello everyone, My name is Thomas Hleck and I have recently been successful in my application to the new Health Director position with H’ulh-etun Health Society. It was quite a lengthy recruitment process and I am honoured to have been chosen amongst some great candidates. I am registered to the Tseshaht First Nation in Port Alberni and married to Cynthia Harry who is from Malahat Nation. My Grandparents are Thomas Gus Sr., Margaret Gus(Watts) and Nicholas Hleck, Violet Hleck(Payne). My wife and I have four amazing children who we both raise together.

I’m very excited to have the new job as Health Director and to work with such a great team here at HHS. As many of you know I have been with H’ulh-etun for over 14 years and have come to know our communities very well. I am honoured to be a part of the communities and been welcomed by so many.

I have grown up at H’ulh-etun and received much training while employed with HHS which has included Management and Administration programs through VIU, UBC and other institutions. This combined with my previous post-secondary and work experience really helps me feel prepared for the work in this position. I look forward to further training opportunities and have recently enrolled in more University programs to continue my education during evenings.

I am so Honoured to work in our Malahat, Halalt and Lyackson First Nation traditional territories. I look forward to hearing from our members and partners to find ways to better serve our members. We will also be building better communication with our Nations and strategizing towards increased and more effective programs and services. There is always room for improvement and I’m excited with the opportunity to move HHS forward.

The COHI Aide is a community member who is hired to support the dental professional and provide some

COHI services independently.

Screening

This is a quick annual check of your child’s teeth, to see if the teeth are healthy and need some care. If your

child needs treatment, a referral is made as appropriate. *This screening does not replace a dental exam in

a dental clinic.

Fluoride Varnish

Applied on a regular basis through the year. It helps to harden tooth enamel (the outside surface of the

teeth) and make the teeth stronger. Fluoride can also help some small cavities from getting bigger.

Sealants

The back teeth have deep grooves where bacteria can collect and cause a cavity. Sealants are a plastic

coasting placed on the chewing surfaces of back teeth to protect the teeth from cavities!

Temporary Fillings

If your child has small cavities, temporary fillings can be placed without the need of freezing or numbing

the tooth.

Education!

The COHI Team is here to help in any way possible, also to support families to ensure their children have

healthy smiles! COHI Services are typically on Wednesday’s from 9 am – 3 pm. Book your appointment

What is Movember?

Founded in 2003 in Australia by two men wanting to make a difference.

You do not have to be a man to contribute or be a part of the Movember movement. Although

the moustache is the most famously known form of raising awareness and money there are oth-

er ways to contribute such as donating or pledging a team or member or participating in one of the commu-

nity events. The Movember foundation is the only charity that has Men’s Health as its only focus.

Men are more likely to NOT seek medical and emotional help when needed and the alarming statistics show

that the suicide rates are 3 times higher than those of females and they’re dying younger because of ignored

health needs or checkups. You can show you care by spreading awareness and/or donating to the cause.
