A Message From the President
What inspires you? Going for a run? Reading a book? Watching a movie?
Gardening? Checking out an art gallery?
At our meeting this month, in addition to our Quarterly Qualifying Compe-
titions, I‟d like to discuss how we get inspired, and the new places that
inspiration leads…
Music inspires me; I know I‟m not unique here. Many artists cite music as their inspiration.
Personally, I‟ve always had pretty eclectic tastes in music; I can find something that I enjoy in
just about any genre. But sometimes, I get bored hearing the same stuff all the time. Last year
I started listening to some new music. It happened by accident. I heard a song on a TV show
and liked it. I looked up that song and others by that artist which then led me to other music
that was new to me. New stuff is exciting! It leads to brainstorms.
Inspiration comes from unexpected places. Like a banjo in pop music; you didn‟t know some-
thing could work until it worked. At The Workshop, Jon Armstrong spoke to self-professed “card
guys” about the importance of learning other types of magic by showing off some card moves
that were based on coin magic. A French Drop with a 5 of Diamonds is like that banjo in pop
music.
The Workshop Revival provided me a chance to try some new things…and I liked them.
Whether or not I use some of the moves I learned stands to be seen, but I have them in my rep-
ertoire now ready to be deployed when inspiration strikes.
As Spring begins to grow and blossom around us (depending on the temperature this week)… I
encourage us all to do the same. The inspiration is everywhere.
All the best,
Ring 129 President

News and Announcements
A Message From the I.B.M International President -
I would like to congratulate Mr. Lance Rich as he takes the
office of President of Ring 129 for 2017. What a wonderful
opportunity for Ring 129 to have a young and vibrant leader
in this Magic community.
Whether you are a professional magician, enthusiast of the art
of magic, magic collector, magic historian, or other field of
the performing magical arts, I encourage you, the community
of Ring 129, to bring in at least one more new member into
your midst.
As all of you know, a key ring has an opening which allows one to easily add an-
other key. Inviting others to link with your Ring can help make it a strong commu-
nity where magic can flourish. Please don’t forget that you are the key to the suc-
cess of your community. May Ring 129 grow and be prosperous in 2017.
I.B.M.President 2016–2017
Oscar Muñoz
Congratulations to Keith Leff - Ring 129 Board Member,
Keith Leff, was recently highlighted in the Kansas City Star
newspaper and the article also was reprinted in the I.B.M. Mel
Kientz “Magician’s Life” email newsletter.

Ring Auction Date Set - Our annual Ring 129 Auction date
has been set for Thursday, April 6th at the Crowne Plaza Ho-
tel. The auction will be held in lieu of our regular monthly
April ring meeting. Terry Davolt has agreed to be our auc-
tioneer!
Last year the auction went well past the projected time limit. So, this year we are
going to try to implement some new guidelines to shorten the auction to a more
manageable timeframe.
Admission is free to members and guests. Anyone may sign up and sell.
The auction will start at 7:00 pm. Sellers may begin to put their items on the
tables at 6:00 pm.
Every seller gets 1 round with 5 lots.
In the second round, every seller gets 3 items. (Sellers, don’t expect to sell more
than 5 to 8 items.)
Buyers and sellers are encouraged to settle up after the action ends.
Sellers fees are 10% and will go to Ring 129. Credit & Debit Cards fees will be
added to buyer’s totals.
Ring 129 to Have Part at Comicon Kansas City! After receiving an invitation from Comicon Kansas City organizers, The Ring 129 Board
of Directors have agreed to man a booth promoting the ring and magic in Kansas City
and provide several magic shows during the 2017 Planet Comicon Convention. With
an estimated 75,000 attendees, the convention is one of Kansas City‟s largest conven-
tions of 2017! The club will be looking for lots of help during the convention. To vol-
unteer to help, contact ring president, Lance Rich.

January 28 we held our annual banquet and
stage competition. Since we are submitting a
photospread of the event, I won’t go into de-
tails here except to note that the top three
places went to Steve Steiner, Pete Walter-
scheid, and Dennis Burks.
With no more contests until the following
month, our February meeting was open to all
sorts of presentations. We began with a dis-
cussion of impromptu magic, asking several
members to discuss their experience of doing
magic on the fly. David Sandy introduced a
game of “Who’s on
the phone,” a sort of
20 questions game
with a well-known
magician on the oth-
er end of the line.
Somehow Laird Wil-
cox was able to
identify the mystery
subject after just a
few questions. It was
Lance Burton. Does David have connections,
or what!!
Ring Report By Stu Lewis
Phil King started the
teaching segment with
three routines involving
a torn newspaper, a math
-based divination, and a
“lie-or-tell-the-truth”
premise.
Brad Lynn followed with
the Slydini “balls-over-
the-head” routine.
Mentalist Duane Roberts
made a prediction involv-
ing a number wheel, and
Jack Cunningham used a
calculator to make a pre-
diction and then ex-
plained the “TOXIC”
principle.
For the next segment of the meeting we
returned to the theme of “Impromptu Mag-
ic,” choosing three teams and asking them to
come up with a routine on the spot, using a
bag of props given to them a few minutes be-
fore the performance.

FIRST AND FOREMOST: NEVER THROW A PLAYING CARD
INTO AN AUDIENCE!!! Playing Cards are like smart
bombs that have been programed to hit someone in
the eye!!! From what I understand magicians have
been sued for that very thing.
OK, now that we've established that lets talk about card throwing. Card throwing has been used
in magic demonstrations by a number of magicians. The best treatise written so far is Ricky Jay's
book "Cards as Weapons". In Jay's act he throws cards directly into a watermelon. Hermann
and Thurston were known to use card throws in their act. Three world records include Rick
Smith who threw a distance of 216 feet. The fastest throw was clocked at 91 MPH, and the highest
throw was 55 feet. Other targets have been cigarettes, hot dogs, newspapers, and foam.
There is also what is known as "Scaling" where you hold a deck in one hand and propel them
one at a time with the thumb. The Guinness Record for that is 114 cards in one minute, effectively
breaking Jeff McBride's record of 104. And, the most accurate throw was also by Rick Smith, who
threw 46 cards in one minute into a 8 inch cylinder. His DVD "The Art of Card Throwing" even
shows how to slice vegetables with a card!
Jeff McBride's DVD "Zoom, Bounce, & Fly" is probably the most comprehensive. He demonstrates
many techniques, and even shows how to bounce cards off the floor, as well as scaling and has
devised the "McGrip Tip Super Card Shooter" gimmick to assist in scaling. They make a premi-
um heavy duty card for throwing called Banshees, made of specially textured plastic. They even
whistle when thrown in the air and a martial arts supply store makes stainless steel cards called
Aces Wild Throwing Cards.
There are basically two grips, though many have been demonstrated: “The Thurston Grip” is
where you place the card between the index and middle fingers and “The Hermann Grip” is
where the card is held between the thumb and middle finger and the index finger is placed to-
wards the top. Both grips are held horizontal and with a forward throw of the arm and flick of
the wrist, which cocked at a 90 degree angle, the card is propelled, giving it a spin.
Achieving accuracy, distance, and force with a card giving it both lateral speed and angular mo-
mentum, or spin, along its axis is an art that takes practice. The spin gives the card stabilization
so that the card's profile remains parallel to the direction of travel and thus encounters the least
air resistance.
More to come,
