SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOUTH DAKOTA 4
The last time State Summer
Games were held in Vermillion
Cher had the #1 song of the year
with “Believe”. It was 1999 and
the campus of USD and the
Games in general looked much
different.
In 1999, Opening Ceremony was
held in the Dome on Saturday
morning before track competition
commenced. The 2019 Opening
Ceremony was held in the beauti-
ful Sanford Coyote Sports Center
with all of the pageantry, lighting
and music you would expect at a
top-notch event.
In 1999, Vermillion’s own Amanda
Dickenson ran the 100 meter dash
in 25.06. She was 21 years old.
This year, Amanda ran a time of
26.26. WOW!
Vermillion was also the site of our
very first State Summer Games.
As we enter our 51st year, it is
apropos to be back on the campus
of the University of South Dakota.
A huge thank you to the Dave
Herbster, Vermillion Chamber of
Commerce, USD, Games Volun-
teers and our Organizing Commit-
tee for your investment of time
and for sharing your talents and
resources with us. You are appre-
ciated!

The 2019 Special Olympics World Games took place March 14-21 in
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. More than 7,000 athletes from
177 countries competed in 24 summer sports, along with 2,500
coaches, 20,000 volunteers, 3,000 honored guests, and 500,000
spectators making this the largest international sporting and human-
itarian event of the year.
Congratulations to Spearfish Peaks Athlete and Lead native Trevor
Tridle for his outstanding performance at the Special Olympics World
Games Abu Dhabi 2019!
Bronze Medal - Deadlift (496.5 lbs.)
Bronze Medal - Squat (467.5 lbs. personal record)
Gold Medal - Bench Press (385.8 lbs. personal record)
Gold Medal - Triple Combination
Trevor told the Black Hills Pioneer in a May 25, 2019 article, “I
would like to thank all my family, friends, coaches Brent and Tracey,
South Dakota Special Olympics, and the Rapid City Rush organiza-
tion for all the support through this once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Trevor certainly did SOSD proud, on and off the field of play. We are
very, very proud of you!
Did you know, on average, people with ID live
17 fewer years than
their non-disabled
counterparts? Well
our Clinicians cer-
tainly do! This is the
reason these folks
travel across the state, lock their clinics for the
day and give their students time off from class
so they can provide our athletes FREE health
screenings during our State Summer Games.
On May 17 and 18, a record number 506 collec-
tive assessments were completed!
Special Olympics Health is made possible by a
generous gift from Tom Golisano and Golisano
Foundation.

Both events were a huge success
with 288 bowlers raising over
30,000 for SOSD and our local

Fitbody Boot Camp Kid’s Superhero and Villain Workout
Fitbody Boot Camp hosted a fundraiser for Special Olympics in a fun way this year!
The gym opened its doors to all kids and athletes to take part in a free will donation
workout led by their favorite superheroes and villains! Some guest appearances in-
cluded Spiderman, Black widow, Punisher, and Ant Man.
Graham Tire Golf Tournament This year’s golf fundraiser was defiantly a hot one,
but completely worth it! 26 teams took part in this
event which was held at Willow Run. Over $2,000
was raised to benefit SOSD. Each team had the op-
portunity to buy a $20 Torch Run shirt for a chance
to put their name in for a PBR Golf Bag with a golf
umbrella or 1 of 2 - $250 gift certificates from Great
Life. This event is always fun to work and see familiar
faces taking to the course in order to help our 2,500
athletes statewide.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run and SOSD
are once again hosting Pigskin Madness! This
fundraiser combines two of our favorite
things—football and raising money for Spe-
cial Olympics South Dakota!
Tickets can be purchased for $20 and are
being sold across the state by the SOSD
State Office, South Dakota law enforcement
and Special Olympics local groups.
Ticket owners are assigned four randomly
drawn teams each week. Total points scored
by your four teams are added together to
give you a weekly total. Each ticket lasts for
the entire 17 weeks of the regular profes-
sional football season. Each person who
participates will have 154 chances to win
throughout the season.
NEW! You can now follow your teams by
downloading the “Pigskinz” App on either
the App store or Playstore.
We will be awarding prizes to the top eight
highest scores, as well as the lowest score.
Over $600 will be awarded each week! At
the end of the 17 weeks, a Grand Prize win-
ner will be announced for the individual who
has the highest accumulated score over the
season. This winner will receive $500.00.
Please contact the State Office at 605-331-
4117 if you are interested in selling a book
or purchasing a ticket. Tickets must be pur-
chased by 5:00 pm on September 5.
NEW! Tickets can now be purchased online
at http://sosd.pigskinmadness.org. For more
information or to check weekly results, visit
our website at www.sosd.org.
LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN
2019 Torch Run
Thank you to everyone who came out to
cheer on our amazing Law Enforcement
Torch Run "Core Runners" as they carried
the Flame of Hope across the state of South
Dakota running through 38 different com-
munities raising awareness for Special Olym-
pics South Dakota. It was a long 4 days, but
knowing we'd get to see all of you at our
stops kept us going until we finally reached
the State Summer Games in Vermillion and
were able to light the caldron at Opening
Ceremony. This year was also a fun one as
we hit even more schools and helping
spread the word about our athletes and
Special Olympics.
People always say "Thank You" to us for all we do for our athletes in Special
Olympics, but we want to say "Thank You" to all of our athletes for what
you do for us! You bring out everything that's good in this world! You give
us back so much more than we deliver and we don't know what we'd do
with out you!
You may have seen our officers sitting on top one the
three Hy-Vee stores in Sioux Falls either singing in their
microphones, or giving out a cute stuffed animal to a
child. The Cop on A Rooftop fundraiser is truly a unique
and fun experience where our law enforcement officers
collect donations for Special Olympics South Dakota by
sitting on top of a roof and asking for donations.
This year, our officers were at the Hy-Vee locations on
Marion, Louise, and Minnesota. A lot of our officers that
took part in the event were warmed by donated coffee
from gracious shoppers during the frigid cold winter’s
day. The event itself was a huge success, raising over
$6,000!
Casey’s Campaign The Casey’s campaign proved to be even more of a
success with the addition of the roundup and ex-
perience major growth with this campaign. Special
Olympics South Dakota cannot thank the Casey’s
workers enough for making this event a success.
Many towns throughout the state that had multi-
ple Casey’s locations were holding competitions
with each other to see who could raise the most
money. Other states took part in this event for the
month of June and also saw huge growth this year.
We are incredibly grateful for this partnership.
Thank you to MJ Daulsin Roofing Company

BIG RESULTS
PLANE PULL
This year marked the 2nd annual Plane
Pull at Maverick Air Center in Sioux
Falls. The event was moved from July
to June this year and with the change,
seemed to bring even more people out
to either participate or watch. This ulti-
mate man vs. machine challenge tests
your strength as teams of 10, plus one
of our Special Olympics athletes, at-
tempt to pull a 70,000 lb. plane in the
fastest time possible. Cost to partici-
pate is $75/person or $750/team.
In addition to the actual Plane Pull, we
had individuals test their strength by
pulling a 6 ton hummer style limo, pro-
vided by Sufu cruise. Other activities
besides the limo and plane pull includ-
ed a smoothie bar by Nature’s Way and
a silent auction area.
We cannot wait to wait to bring back
the event for next year!
E ach year, a Highway Patrol officer is chosen as
the High Patrol Officer of the Year. This person
goes above and beyond their job duties and excels
in whatever they work on. This year’s award goes to
our very own Law Enforcement Torch Run volun-
teer Pat Booman. Pat has been involved in several
Tip A Cops, Torch Runs, Polar Plunges, and Plane
Pulls. Congratulations Patrick!
Thank you to Codi Nincehelser for
using your earnings throughout
the year to make a donation of
$1,600!

Athlete Input Council Since 2013, a dedicated and talented group of Athlete leaders has been meeting three times yearly to share
ideas, concerns, make recommenda-tions and provide feedback on events and competitions. Two members of the AIC also serve on the SOSD Board of Directors.
Can and do these Athlete leaders influence decisions made by our Board and State Staff? Most definite-ly!

The first Wednesday of every March, Special
Olympics, Inc hosts the Spread the Word to
End the Word campaign. This movement has
spread across the United States and around
the globe, involving people of all ages - from
elementary schools to college campuses and
corporate offices. The goal of Spread the
Word to End the Word is for people to think
about the hurtful and disparaging uses of the
word “retarded” and pledge to stop using it.
Over the past 9 years, thousands of young
people in our state have taken the pledge to
not use the R-word. Has this program been
successful? Based on the inspirational stories
our schools have shared with us, it is a re-
sounding YES!
In 2018, we asked our students to eliminate
using the R-word AND to “Be honest. Be hum-
ble. Be Kind.” Again, the feedback was uplift-
ing.
For this year’s campaign, we built on our past
themes and upped the ask… INCLUSION.
As our number of participating schools con-
tinues to grow, we are humbled by the good
works that is taking place across the state.
We look forward to the day when this work is
no long needed!
Without the dedication and expertise of these amazing volun-
teers, this important message would not have reached almost 28,000 South Dakota students.
THANK YOU!

“The students in elementary spent
time learning about different disabili-
ties and how they impact students in
school. I presented throughout the day
in the Junior High and High School.
The students learned about Special
Olympics, using person first language,
and inclusion. It was a great success
and the students learned a lot! I've
created a collage outside my room of
all the pictures that were taken and it
will stay up the rest of the year!”
