IEJC REORGANIZING

In recent years the Inland Empire Jag Club has struggled to keep up its mem-bership despite the outstanding efforts of several long time Club members. Now some of the most active members are moving out of the area and the Club is reorganizing.

Longtime member, Mike Zavos is spear-heading the effort to rebuild the Club. His success is of vital interest to the JOC because the IEJC runs one of the three JCNA Sanctioned Concours in our area (along with ours and the San Diego event). Entry into three Concours is re-quired by JCNA to compete for National Awards. Without the IEJC Concours, our members who are seeking national points would have to go to Phoenix, Tuc-

son, Reno or Sacramento for their third Concours……I am sure we would all pre-fer to spend a nice weekend in Idyllwild!Mike sent the following:

“You are cordially invited to the inaugu-ral meeting of the new IEJC on Saturday, January 18, 2014 from noon until 2 PM at the NEW Jaguar of Anaheim Hills: 5425 East La Palma Ave.Anaheim Hills, CA 92807

Sven Larson and the staff at Jaguar Land Rover of Anaheim Hills are excited and ready to host us as we settle into club business. Dealership and Service De-partment tours and test drives will be offered. Refreshments will be provided, and we hope you will enjoy spending time with your new club mates. For Directions click here http://www.jag-uaranaheimhills.com/hours.aspx”

JOC members can join the IEJC by paying only the Associate Member dues of $25 per year and are heartily encouraged to do so. Voting membership is $50 and the Club is currently seeking volunteers for various Board functions. For more info and to support the IEJC, please con-tact Mike at [email protected].

PASSING OF LARRY GRAVENSIt is with great regret that we note the passing of Larry Gravens, member of the Club since 1971 (JOC #619). Larry served the Club as Treasurer for thirteen years, ending in 2012. Larry was a fixture at JOC Board meetings, even after stepping down as Treasurer, and his sage input will be missed.

Larry passed on Sunday, January 5 after being hospitalized for a fall suffered in mid-November.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations to the National Trust for Historic Preservation or The Nature Con-servancy.

Condolences may be sent to Larry’s stalwart wife and companion, Judy at 1611 Via Del Rey, South Pasadena, CA 91030.

C Type

I first saw it listed on eBay of all places. Ann and I own to other Jaguars, an XK 120 FHC and an E Type FHC. We have been caretakers of several older Jaguars over the years. Anyway, I saw the C Type on eBay and it looked very promising. There were no bidders, so I contacted the owner, Mike Griffin of Victoria, BC, Canada. Mike called me right back and we hit it off as he had been a yacht deal-er in Annapolis, Maryland. He built the car when he lived in Annapolis in 1990 and spent several years enjoying it with his late wife.

He bought a 1962 Jaguar Mk II as a do-nor car, and rebuilt everything as he went along. It has a 3.8 l engine, the Mk II Salisbury rear end., disc brakes and suspension Since the donor had an au-tomatic transmission he found a later E Type all synchro gearbox. His nautical background came in handy as he faired all the undersurfaces of the GRP body and sprayed them with Awlgrip LP paint in an aluminum color.

After talking with Mike for about an hour, I contacted a friend who lives in Victoria and asked him to take a look at

the car for me. My friend is not a “car guy”, but sent a very detailed evalua-tion. All sounded good, so I called Mike back and negotiated a price dependent on our inspection. We flew up and con-firmed that he did a first rate job building it, and made the deal.

Now to get it back to southern California. I am judging official for the sport of sail-ing and had a regatta scheduled in San Francisco. A friend called and asked if I would be available to judge a regatta at the Cascade Locks on the Columbia River near Portland just prior the San Francis-co event. This worked out perfectly. We called Mike and made arrangements to collect the car.

We flew to Victoria on August 13 and the next day we were on the 8:00 AM ferry to Port Angelus, Washington. Af-ter the 2 hour crossing, we cleared US Customs, “Have a nice day” was the re-sponse when we said we bought the car in Canada, and we were off to Oregon. Other than some delays (and fresh tar) due to road construction we had a good trip arriving in Cascade Locks, Oregon 10 hours later. After the regatta was over we then piled all we could in the spaces around the

cockpit and headed south toward San Francisco. We tried to stay on second-ary roads rather than freeways as we were riding about the same height as the wheels on the large trucks on the road. We drove down the west coast of Or-egon, visited friends along the way and made Santa Rosa, California north of San Francisco in two days.

After two weeks of judging sailboat rac-ing on San Francisco Bay we were glad to get back in the car to head home to Newport Beach. We again tried to stay on secondary two-lane roads. We took one side trip up California Highway 46 to the junction of Calif. 41. This is the (in)famous intersection where James Dean met his untimely end driving his Porsche Spyder to the Salinas road races in 1955,

Again, taking the time to visit friends we arrived home in Newport Beach on Sep-tember 9. We covered about 1500 miles in the open with no ill effects, thanks to the fine weather. It took a while to clean up the C Type, but the only problems we had were running out of gas along the Oregon coast (the fuel gauge is not working) and a broken muffler mount in Garberville, California.

Tonight Show host Jay Leno may be the master of one-liners, but when it comes to fine cars this comedian doesn’t joke around. Jay took the time to drive the Jaguar Project 7 concept car at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and was so impressed he invited the F-TYPE V8 S to his garage for a special webisode.

JOC CHRISTMAS PARTY ENJOYED

BY LARGE CROWD

The Long Beach Yacht Club again rolled out the red carpet to the JOC for our an-nual Holiday Party. The Club (theirs and ours) were in their best seasonal attire. The crowd was nearly sixty, including some members we don’t often see at other events.

After cocktails and a fine dinner, Presi-dent Charlie Hallums gave a brief “State of the Club” address and then proceeded to the Awards.

Numerous Club Members won JCNA Na-tional and Regional Concours Awards (see the list published elsewhere in this edi-tion). The JOC Awards were presented as follows:

Laviolette Award – Highest National Finish in Champion Division

Art and Jackie Guzman (6 time win-ners!) – perfect 100 score!

Award – Highest National Finish in Driven Division

– David and Jocelyn Kelly 9.994

Jane Dawson Award – Outstanding Contribution to the Club by a Member

Haig Babayon (Britalia Auto)Steve Sales (Steve’s Jaguar)

For their support of the JOC Tech Sessions

Leahy Award – Outstanding Contribu-tion by a Board Member

Steve Kirby

Additionally, newsletter editor Kevin Easton presented a special award to Paul McNabb in thanks for the more than two years’ worth of articles contributed by Paul to the Jaguar Tales. Paul’s “Travels with Lucille” articles chronicled his many and varied trips in his trusty XK150 to car events near and far.

The evening was capped off with a raffle for a Mount Blanc pen, won by Susan Turner, and the awarding several holi-day decorations that had been crafted by Club Hospitality Director, Shirley Nyquist. The Club again wishes to thank Jim and

Coleen Neary who make the venue pos-sible, John Nyquist for handling the tro-phies and of course Shirley for all her or-ganization and coordination work.

JOC INVADES CHINO AIRPORT

The Club’s first event for 2014 started the year off on a good foot with 35 members and guests visiting the Yank’s Air Museum on January 4th. After gathering in the parking lot for some Jag Talk, we moved into this large and impressive museum led

by our docent James. James it turned out was a twenty-something fellow. Some eyes rolled when he was introduced…..some wondered who would be teaching whom on this tour. Much to our surprise and delight, James turned out to be well informed and enthusiastic and seemingly could not be stumped by member ques-tions no matter how obscure. He led a most informative and interesting tour.

The museum proper features two main rooms, propeller and jet. Right off the bat we were greeted by a full size reproduc-tion of the Wright Brothers plane and the exhibits only went up from there. This is a truly amazing collection.

After planes, planes and more planes, we got to go behind the scenes to the res-toration shop and the “boneyard”, areas usually off limits to regular guests. About a dozen planes, including a glider and a helicopter are under restoration cur-rently. The amount and intricacy of the woodwork on some of the older planes is amazing, as is the complexity of the con-trols and hydraulics on the newer stuff.

The boneyard again reminded us what a massive undertaking aeronautical resto-ration is. The occupants of the yard range from fairly complete planes in need of lots of TLC to basket cases which would challenge even the most strong of heart. How they ever get all those parts back to-gether is astonishing.

After a sally through the gift shop, former President Richard Darnell took half the group to visit a private hanger collection (mostly commercial jets) while the rest of us made a beeline to Flo’s Airport Café. Apparently it is no secret that Flo’s serves some of the best food (including home-made pies) in the area…the large place was packed. Fortunately we were quickly served and later joined by the second half of the group.

After brunch, some headed off to the nearby Planes of Fame Museum, while the rest headed home. A beautiful day for a drive, a great venue and a nice crowd.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 15FEBRUARY ClUB EVENT

The 7th Edition of this perennial favorite Club event will be held on Saturday, Feb-ruary 15. As usual, we will meet up at Car’s and Coffee in Irvine and then head out on a truly unusual adventure, end-ing with a FREE LUNCH. We may have driven every back road in Orange County over the last six years, but we have not explored every interesting corner. Join us this year for Jags, Trivia, driving chal-lenges, a great raffle, a big lunch and some real surprises.

This year’s event will be something really different. In addition to our usual “Road-side Trivia” contest, which challenges drivers and navigators to answer ques-tions pertaining to the passing country-side, we will again include a Poker Run. For those not familiar, participants will collect five playing cards along the route. At the end, the team with the best poker hand will win a nice prize.

While we never reveal the destination lo-cation in advance, we know you will find our lunch stop interesting. Upon arrival at the destination, and prior to lunch, there will be a bit of walking involved (all flat, level and paved) to solve some of the last Trivia mysteries. At noon we will meet for our FREE lunch, prize raffle, and poker run and trivia winner’s awards.

There is absolutely no cost for this event. As always, we encourage participants to purchase raffle tickets in abundance in lieu of buying lunch. 100% of the pro-ceeds go to the Cystic Fibrosis Founda-tion for research. Over the past six years we have raised nearly $10,000 for CF, we hope this year will be the biggest yet.

Record E-type in New York

Text: Paul McNabb Photography: Day Krolik Special thanks to long time contributor, Paul McNabb, for reaching out to report on this very special car and auction re-sult. There is seemingly always news to share, and we are all the eyes and ears of the hobby. Don’t hesitate to write me if you come across something to share. – Ed.

An earthquake hit a couple of weeks ago, in New York for a change. While I was in Oceanside reporting on a very original E-type being restored to concours condi-tion, owner Tom Krefetz mentioned he had been approached by RM Auctions for a special E-type to add to a small auc-tion coming up, Art of the Automobile 2013, in New York City in conjunction with Sotheby’s.

Tom offered a 1966 SI OTS; stunning in black on black on black, chassis 1E11911. This was a great choice because the car recently won a JCNA national champion-ship recording three perfect 100-point scores in regional competition. If you attended the recent Classic Showcase Open House, the car was on display for attendees and even more impressive in person…nothing looks as stunning as a black OTS.

The car was found in complete, original condition, aside from a period Iskenderi-an racing cam. It was originally delivered through Jaguar of New York to the first owner, Oceana Aerial Photographers in San Marino, California, on December 23, 1965. It was quietly residing in a ga-rage before being purchased and sent to Classic Showcase for a full show-level restoration. The car was originally pale primrose with black interior showing only 71,000 original miles. Starting with a good, solid original car is the ideal basis for a nut and bolt rotisserie restoration to achieve this level of detail.

The Auction event was well conceived; mixing fine art with fine examples of rare and significant classic cars and bikes. Organizers were hoping for a world re-

cord and were not disappointed; a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, which was been given a presale estimate of $12 million to $15 million, sold for $14.3 million and a 1956 Aston Martin DB 2/4 MKII, by Ghia sold for $2.3 million against a presale estimate of $1.8 to $2.4 million but it was the E-type that achieved notoriety when the hammer fell at an astounding $467,000 including commission.

Prices continue to ascend for significant cars with high level restorations but also for survivor cars in original, as-used condition. Historically, the very early outside bonnet latch cars have brought top money but if this is any indication of where the market is headed, club mem-bers are well advised to head out to the

garage and check on that E-type! It may have just doubled in price.

Readers can find a lot of information about this E-type at the RM site: http://rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=1063773.

Additional information is also available at the xkedata site: h t t p : / / w w w. x ke d a t a . c o m / c a r s /detail/?car=1E11911.

And by the way, if you own an E-type or XJ please register it on the xkedata.com or xj6data.com (including XJ12 and XJS) by chassis number.

JCNA Trophy CoNfirmATioN

After December 1st, all competition scores should have been posted on the JCNA site and you should be able to view all the standings on the JCNA.com Stand-ings page.

To see the Standings, go to jcna.com, click on the Standings link, then click on the: 2013 Results and Provisional Stand-ings to check your scores. Under 2013 Final Standings / Competi-tion Awards, select from one of the fol-lowing: Concours (North American) | Concours (Regional) | Rally | Slalom.

Scroll down to locate your name. For North American Standings, if you have placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd, your name should be displayed. Click on your score. You should then see the list of the concours you attended. Below your list of events you have entered, you should see “click here to confirm data for your award or-der”. You will be required to enter your address and other contact information. Please be sure to include your email ad-dress, it is not automatically included.

If you do not include it, there will be no way for you to receive an email from JCNA with further details.

Each entrant is responsible for con-firming their concours, rally and slalom scores. This is because some people move and some information may have been incorrectly entered after the events you attended and that is why JCNA does not just automatically send out trophies to everyone listed on the web site.

After your information has been received by the trophy committee, it will be post-ed on a link from the AGM page. (That is because that page can quickly update by the trophy committee.) You should also receive an email within 48 hours of con-firming your information. If you do not include your email address, there is no quick way to contact you. If you do not receive an email from the trophy com-mittee, they have not received your in-formation.

When you complete the confirmation information, one of the questions is, do you want to receive your trophy at the AGM, that means you must attend the AGM, or do you want to have it shipped

OWN THE ’79 CANNONBALL RUN WINNING JAGUAR XJS

Now offered for sale is the ’78 XJS reputed to be the one driven to victory in the 1979 (and last) Cannonball Run. The car is in sad shape but boasts two brass plaques on the glove box attesting to its fame as the race winner (buyer responsible for documenting). To see photos of the car, go to http://bringatrailer.com/2013/06/20/32h51m-record-holder-1978-jaguar-xjs-cannonball-run-winner/.

The Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, widely known simply as the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run, was an unofficial, unsanctioned automobile race run five times in the 1970s from New York City to Redondo Beach. Con-ceived by car magazine writer and auto racer Brock Yates and fellow Car and Driver editor Steve Smith, the first run was not a real competitive race, as there was only one team running, but intended both as a celebration of the United States Interstate Highway System and a protest against the 55 mph speed limit coming into effect at the time.

The initial cross-country run was accomplished by Yates’ son, Brock Yates, Jr., Steve Smith, and friend Jim Williams beginning on May 3, 1971 in a 1971 Dodge Custom Sportsman van. Jack May and Rick Cline drove a Ferrari Dino in a world’s record time of 35 hours and 53 minutes, on April 23-25, 1975, averaging 83 mph. The most remarkable effort certainly was by American racing legend Dan Gurney (winner of the 1967 24 hours of Le Mans), who won the second run in a Ferrari Daytona. Dan himself put it best, saying, “At no time did we exceed 175 mph.” With Brock Yates as co-driver, it took them 35 hours and 54 minutes to travel 2,863 miles at an average of approximately 80 mph.

The record for official Cannonballs is 32 hours and 51 minutes (about 87 mph), set in the final run by Dave Heinz and Dave Yarborough in a Jaguar XJS in April 1979.Source: Wikipedia

MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL TIME ALERT: NEW DUES STRUCTURE

Now is the time to renew your household membership in the JOC for 2014. The JOC now has a two-tier membership dues structure for renewing your membership. The amount of your dues depends on whether you want to receive the JOC newsletter, Jaguar Tales, via email only or via the US Postal Service mail. The annual dues amount for the newsletter email-only digital edition is only $60. The annual dues amount for the newsletter USPS mail paper edition is now $80.

Also note that the number of newsletters is being reduced from 12 per year to 10 per year in order to keep the dues amount near to the amount in previous years ($70) and to offset JCNA’s recent $8 increase to their annual dues (JCNA increased their annual dues to $30 from the previous $22).

PLEASE NOTE: If your membership information is unchanged, the only information to record on this form is your name and address and the dues amount depending on whether you receive the email or USPS mail edition of the club’s newsletter. However, if any of your information changed during the year, please record the change on the form.

Your check for the dues, along with the form on the reverse side is to be made payable to the Jaguar Owners Club, Inc. mailed to:

Gerry Willburn

5073 Melbourne Drive

Cypress, CA 90630.

The dues payment must be received by January 25, 2014 in order for a member to maintain current membership status. Members who have not timely paid their dues will be dropped from the membership roster. The January 25, 2014 cutoff is required in order to have the JCNA portion of the dues in the JCNA hands by February 15, 2014, deadline

Your promptness in paying your dues will be greatly appreciated and thank you for renewing your membership in JOC.
