Silverside Nominations
2016-2017
A s we move toward the future strong leadership is
essential for the programs and activities which are such a wonderful part of Silverside Church. It seems best that our leadership folks have a keen interest in the area they serve. So I have a request. Please drop a note to Brent Grant outlining what board you find interesting and intriguing and your Nominations Committee will take that into consideration as we proceed to develop the 2016-2017 Board Nominations. Thanks a bunch. Brent Grant

C onvenience foods such as cake mixes, hamburger
helper, rice dishes and soup mixes are the requested products for the Claymont Food Pantry during April. Your contributions, whether as the requested items or as checks, are always appreciated.
W alt Stapleton has updated our Church Constitution with its recent amendments, the first revision since May 2005. The
goal is to give every church member both a printed and digital version of the Constitution. Hard copies will be handed out at the May 15 Congregational meeting, to be held after the Sunday Gathering.
A new, current Church Directory is now complete, thanks in large part to the efforts of our Church Secretary, Blaine Breeding. Members will soon receive printed and computer versions.
N ext up is a Bowling Party for all the Sunday School
children. It will be held at First State Lanes from 12 noon to 2pm on April 17th. We will leave right after the Gathering. Lunch will be provided at the Bowling Alley and the event will be a Sunday School Treat. Please sign up if you want your child to be included. We would love to have them! Let us know if you need transportation. We have some car space available or you can meet us there. The Treasure Hunt in March was terrific, with fun (and Leprechaun hats) for everyone.
G od saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it
was very good. (Genesis 1:31) The Green Committee continues to urge an awareness and a personal commitment to conser-ving energy. Our children in the Sunday school program are working on constructing a paper tree that will be displayed in a prominent place. This will be our Pledge Tree. The children will provide leaves for us to write our own commitment for conser-vation which will then be placed on the tree. The list of sugges-tions that the Green Committee drew up is still available in the Narthex. We are also encouraging partici-pation in BringYourOwnBag Delaware (BYOB). All you need to do is bring to church your clean, single use plastic bags. There will be bins available (maybe the children can decorate them?!) for you to place your bags. On April 23rd we will be delivering the bags to the Justison Landing Park along the Wilming-ton Riverfront. This is a Guinness World record attempt to form the world's largest plastic bag ball!! Let’s do our part, no matter how small - We can make a difference.

Forum Programs for April
April 6: Community Policing: Myth and Reality
Walter Ferris joined the Wilmington Police Department in 1989 and moved his way up the ranks. Various assignments included serving on the hostage negotiation team, the critical incident stress management team and he was the honor guard bagpiper. Walter’s favorite assignment was Community Policing, which he did for five years. After 27 years, he retired two months ago as a Master Sergeant and is now working in the office of Attorney General Matt Denn. April 13: Causation: Does one thing cause another? Is cause/effect a reliable way to interpret the world?
David Hume says No -- Causation is an illusion; it is merely a human projection of our expectations.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau says Yes -- Causation is a function of human will; and one thing follows another as a matter of natural law.
Brent Grant and James Moser will present a dialogue on these two thinkers and invite discussion about cause-and-effect. This program was postponed from its original schedule in March to April. It was too good to miss altogether! April 20: Growing up in China
The Chinese New Year started Wednesday, February 10, but a snow storm forced us to postpone our celebration until April when we will be privileged to hear Xiaoming Song’s personal exper iences of growing up in China. Xiaoming is the daughter-in-law of Brent and Marge Grant and she still spends much of her time in China. As a special treat, Xiaoming will bring some Chinese dumplings for us to sample! April 27: Bob Balderston, My Story.
Bob will share his journey as a teacher, sports enthusiast, and collector. Join us in hearing the story of this fellow Silversider.
O n Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9, the Community for
Integrative Learning will present. Christian Mystics and the Mystic in Ourselves and Others; Eckhart, Hildegard, Merton..

News of Silverside Members and friends
Marie Neal continues her rapid recuperation. Hurrah! Bob Zickefoose continues his recovery from surgery and will be on limited duty as sexton until he gets an OK from his doctor to return to his regular duties. D J Gibson also spent a few days in Wilmington Hospital, spent a few days recovering at the home of her daughter, and is back home at last.
The deadline for the May issue of Inside Silverside is April 20. Please send articles and information to Mimzie Uhler at [email protected].
Bill Linn spent several days in the hospital after his episode during our gathering on Sunday, March 20. He was released from the hospital to return home, but had a fall and was read-mitted to the hospital. When he is discharged he will move to Assisted Living at Shipley Manor. We send healing thoughts to Bill.

Emmanuel Dining Room
V olunteers from Silverside served fried chicken,
macaroni and cheese, seasoned collard greens and cookies at Emmanuel Dining Room on Sunday, March 13. Our servers that day were Mimi and James Moser along with Carol and Jon Heggan. In spite of the fact that this has become a favorite meal of those who come to Emmanuel, only about 165 people attended; this was a surprisingly smaller group than usual. As a result, the Silversiders decided the remaining food should be put to good use. Approximately 40 chicken legs were delivered to Gordon Umberger as a supple-ment to dinner for the men staying at St. Andrews Place that night, and a large tray of macaroni and cheese was taken to the Sunday Breakfast Mission where the men were extremely happy to receive the additional food for supper.
Brian Kelly, Kelly Becker-Kelly and Gwen joined the Silverside family on March 20. More information about them will appear next month.
Welcome New Members
B aby Josie Joy Overly, along with her family, Mom Julia,
Dad Mark, brother Tyler and sister Ripley, all took part in a baby and family dedication during the Gathering on Easter Sunday, March 27. It is such a delight to have new young families and especially new babies as part of the Silverside family.
