INSIDE PADUA SPORT
Term 2, 2017
I am a youth athlete …
I am brave and strong and talented. But I’m still just a kid. I am not perfect. I am a work in progress. I need you to be pat ient
while I test the limits of my body and work through the emotions that come with success and failure. When I make a mistake, I
wonder if you’ll be disappointed. When I reach my goals, I look to see if you are watching. I am a youth athlete. I love my
sport. You call it competition. I call it playing the game. I want to win and have fun. I am a youth athlete. I am YOUR youth
athlete. Winning feels great, but your praise feels infinitely better. Please remember these things, and I promise to do my best
to make you proud.
(Proactive Coaching)
Parents and coaches need to work together to raise strong young people. We can’t always know the motivation behind all
students. Affirmation, grace and encouragement go a long way to develop great men and women. High profile athletes are
often promoted as role models but parents, coaches and teachers also play an important role in promoting the benefits of
sport participation or societal values.
While fear works as a motivator for teams (to some degree), it does not function nearly as well as love, trust, and respect. A
team motivated through love, trust, and respect produces great memories and lasting friendships. Teammates do not want to
let each other down. They depend on and trust one another to complete their mission. Teams built on love, trust, respect, and
group responsibility lean on each other in times of trouble and tend to be able to successfully sustain their motivation for
longer periods of time.
Sport provides us with so many lifelong lessons. As parents, coaches and teachers we need to continually remind ourselves
that our behaviours, words and actions can have a significant impact on young people. It’s not always easy – everyone can
get caught up in the moment and all of us have had that hindsight moment. “I wish I had of dealt with that differently or said
that in a better way?” We never stop learning.
A huge thankyou to the coordinators and coaches who give up so much of their time to allow the students to enjoy these great
experiences. I know at times we don’t get everything right but we are happy to admit that, learn from it and move on. When
coaching, the priority must always be your players. I think we do that well at Padua.
This is the last round at Banyo this Saturday. This becomes a significant day for our Seniors. Some have played 8 seasons of
Rugby and Football. It’s the end of something that has become very special to them – playing at Banyo – our home. The day
will be dedicated to our Open Rugby and Football teams. Thanks to the Seniors who have given years of wonderful service to
Term 2 Sport. I wish you the very best as we take on SLC.

Goal oriented vs Task oriented
Which should you choose?
There are generally two different types of people in relation to working towards something. Those who are TASK
(process) oriented and those who are GOAL (outcome) oriented. Both approaches can work and each of us may
have a preferred method to use to get to where we want to be. However, we need to be aware that there are a lot
more pitfalls in being largely goal oriented instead of task focused. This is mainly because we can’t control the
outcome of anything only the effort we put in.
Boys goal setting /outcome fixation can be problematic for many reasons:
1. You can fall into the trap of only allowing yourself to feel happy when you have achieved your goal, instead
of enjoying the ride that got you to that point.
2. We generally set very specific metrics as our goals i.e. ‘I want to be able to do 30 push ups by the end of
term 2’. The issue with this is, if you don’t achieve this specific number then you can feel like you have
failed when you should be proud of the effort you put in during that time.
3. People can become blinded by their specific goals to the point that nothing else matters and improvements
in other areas go unnoticed.
It’s important to realise that no matter how hard we try we can’t actually control the outcome only the effort we put
in at any given time. Positive results are an enjoyable by-product of the consistent hard work you put in everyday
over a period of time, but shouldn’t be your focus. If you are results driven than you’ll find yourself constantly
chasing reasons to be happy instead of enjoying everyday knowing you’re putting your best foot forward when
you focus on the task/ process. Remember enjoyment is the greatest motivation tool. The funny thing is after all
that time not focusing on the results and instead enjoying the journey you end up achieving the goals you weren’t
even focusing on. Meaning you end up with the best of both worlds: you enjoyed the process, put in your best
effort and are rewarded at the end with the positive results you knew would come if you trusted the process.
I’m not saying don’t set any goals, just try to not make them the be all and end all. I think Nick Saban (4 Time
College Football National Championship winning coach) is better qualified to give his advice on the topic. “It’s the
journey that’s important. You can’t worry about end results. It’s about what you can control, every m inute of every
day. You always must have a positive attitude and discipline in training, weights room, conditioning, in the
classroom, in everything. It’s a process.”
“When it comes to outcomes vs process(task), process trumps outcome everytime.”
So boy’s I encourage you to put your best effort towards everything you do in life and enjoy the task at hand. I
guarantee you if you adopt this approach you will have a lot more successes than failures and more importantly
you will enjoy the journey.

Rugby - Juniors
Round five saw our junior rugby players spread across three different Colleges; Ambrose Treacy, St Peter’s
Lutheran College and Marist Brothers Ashgrove. From the 14 fixtures, we still have two teams who remain
undefeated. Here, the 8 Gold and 5A boys produced great rugby, running in many tries and defending their line to
the final siren. Max Hinde was clearly the best on ground in the 8 Gold team and earned himself both Man of the
Match and Junior player of the round. His strong carries and commitment at the break down saw him break the
line on numerous occasions - setting up phase after phase.
Almost at the same time, Conor Venables put his hand up from set plays and crashed through the defensive line
consistently in the 31-14 victory. Conor has trained the house down over the past few weeks and put the words,
“train hard-play hard”, into action. These boys are looking to this week’s game, against a strong St Laurence’s
College, as a Grand Final type atmosphere. We wish them all the best.
Earlier in the day, it was fantastic to see Michael Tierney’s 5C team register their first win of the season. The
smile on the face of Cooper Searle, and his team mates for that matter, was a highlight as young Cooper ran
straight through the defence for an 80m try. He then repeated this in the dying stages of the game from just 30m
out, to cement the win. Toby Bucholz’s tackling and fine display of catch-passing had the game never doubt and
the boys are already talking of more wins to come. The thirst and hunger has arrived!
Over to St Peter’s at Indooroopilly, where we were very unlucky to see two intercept tries spoil the party in the
6As. Despite a gallant effort from players such as James Mason and Harry Hill to try and claw back the deficit,
they went down by nine points. We are sure that victory for these young man is just around the corner. Josh
Casey and Tom Tozer were both very strong in their close losses in the 6C and 7A games, as was Declan
Woollard from Year 6.
An important round of Rugby lies in front of us this weekend as we take on St Laurence’s College. As the second
last game of the season, it is crucial that we commit to training in order to put our best performance on the field on
Saturday. It has been obvious that the teams who support this are the ones who are performing well in the tough
stages of their matches.
See you at Runcorn.
Rugby - Senior
It was perfect day for rugby and proved to be a successful one for the Padua rugby boys. Plenty of running rugby
was on display with some high scores being racked up throughout the day. Well done to Mr. Lowrie and the 9A’s
bouncing back from last week’s defeat to score 60 points in their win. Congratulations must also go to Mr. Moffatt
and the 10A’s for their strong effort and solid win following two weeks in a row of last minute defeats. The 1st XV
completed the day with resounding victory with strong performances by Hudson Creighton and Tom Best. A big
thank you to all the players in particular those who sat on the bench and received game time. Thanks again to all
staff and coaches and lastly thank you to all parents and supporters. Next weekend is our last home game of the
season and last home game for our seniors. Hope to see a big show of support at Banyo next Saturday.
Soccer – Junior (Years 5-8)
Round 5 kicked off on a glorious morning against St Peters. There were a number of closely contested games
with both the 5C and 8A teams coming from 2 goals down to draw 2-2. Overall our junior teams game away with
the majority of the wins which is a credit to the hard work the boys have been putting in at training.
Our 8B side showed great perseverance after a tight first half to then go on to score 5 unanswered goals in the
second half to finish 6-1 winners. The 6A side were unlucky not to come away with some points after recovering
from a sluggish first half to go down 2-1 in a nail biting finish.
There were plenty great individual performances on show with some great attacking raids on show from the likes
of Will Purcell, Johnny Ryan and Josh Stephenson. However, player of the round went to James Morris-Gibson
whose effort in goals kept the 8B side in the contest. Well done James.
This week our junior footballers are away to St Laurence's who will again be a tough opposition. Our teams have
been training well and it is clear that the boys are starting to gel and work well as a team. If they play in a similar
fashion to last week I have no doubt that they will no doubt have even greater success this week. I look forward to
seeing all the teams in action this weekend.
Soccer - Senior
Round 5 saw our Senior footballers host St Peters at Banyo. There were several excellent performances and we
certainly won more games than we lost. The most impressive performance came from our First XI team who won
convincingly 3-0 against a strong St Peters team. With the score 0-0 at half time it took a second half hat trick
from captain Corey Salvati to get the win. Since changing their formation the firsts have now won their last two
games convincingly. They will look to keep this going next week against tradition football powerhouse St
Lawrence’s. Our 9B team were dominant winning 9-1 and our 10As kept their recent run of good form going-
winning 4-1. Sam Smith’s half volley from just outside the centre circle to open the scoring in this game is a real
contender for goal of the year. Senior player of the week for round 5 must go to Corey Salvati for his hat trick for
the firsts- something that is quite rare in firsts football. This Saturday we host St Lawrence’s at Banyo. They were
the 2016 Football aggregate winners so we will need to be at our best again.
Chess
“Chess is not always about winning. Sometimes, it's simply about learning. And so is life." Author unknown.
This year’s AIC Chess competition has been even between all the schools. Not one school has dominated the
entire competition as in previous years. This makes for a more level playing field and some good competitive
games across the divisions.
The first round of play began and finished rather quickly. The coaches from both sides were a little lost to why it
finished so soon. The other concern we had was the overall result, it was not in our favour. Out of 7 games we
had managed only 1 win to our Senior A’s and one draw to the Senior B’s. Could this be the end of the road for
our Opens who are currently on top of the AIC ladder?
One tactic that players are taught is the chess fork. This is where a single piece can make two or more direct
attacks at the same time. It is also called the double attack. An example of how this is played is when a Knight
can capture their opponents Queen or Rooke. It forces their opponent to decide on which piece they will lose.
Joshua Darragh, playing in the Senior B’s this week traded Queens early in his second round. With this important
piece no longer in play, Joshua managed to fork his opponent not once, but three times. Putting himself into a
good position to register a win for himself and also for the Senior B’s.
Lachlan McCall, after noticing that the Senior A’s had secured a win, decided to have some fun on the chess
board. His goal was to gain as many Queens as possible. I should point out that this is not a tactic that is normally
played. Once a Pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it can be promoted to any other piece (the Queen is
normally chosen). Just prior to the game finishing, Lachlan had gained four Queens and was in the process of
obtaining a fifth. Unfortunately, Lachlan managed to stalemate himself and the game was drawn, illustrating why
this tactic is not played.
One by one games ended and the results recorded. In total 28 games were played in round 2 between the
Juniors Intermediate and Senior teams. The result for round 2 showed 6 losses, 2 draws and 20 wins. This turned
our overall position from Round 1 to register 5 wins and 3 losses for the night. Well done boys.
