W elcome to the July/August edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.
Here at Inside Magazine, we’re passionate about learning, not just for the young but throughout life. To this end, staff are encouraged to attend courses to make them better human beings. A recent workshop on Mindfulness in a Workplace Context, for example, seemed to improve everybody’s mindfulness in the workplace, which was great, as mindfulness was becoming an issue in the workplace. Personally, I booked onto four courses: Decision Making in the Workplace, Resolution in the Workplace, How to Remember Things (in the Workplace, mainly) and Gender Stereotyping (in the Workplace, obviously). These, it was felt, would make me much better at doing whatever it is that I do. Unfortunately, when it came down to it, I couldn’t make my mind up whether to go on the Decision Making course, didn’t really feel 100% about Resolution, just clean forgot about Remembering Things, and felt that the Gender Stereotyping was more an issue for women.

T his is another story of the quite-goods. Of the runners-up, the also rans and the ones that just ran
away. Of the flames that never flared too fiercely, or flickered for a while and then faded. We’re not all immortals. Some of us are quite good, though. And some of the quite-goods have their moments, when they flicker and fade. When it comes to music, one of the great things is that you don’t need to be an expert on theory to enjoy it. In this respect, it’s the opposite of dressage or American Football. I know that I like the Arctic Monkeys and Mozart, but I have no idea why. Hence, I have no idea what the chromatic scale is, and have no inclination to find out. I know it, sort of, when I hear it in the music of Debussy: it’s the bit that sounds kind
of… well… chromatic, really. A normal scale consists of eight notes, unequally spaced. The chromatic scale uses twelve notes, equally spaced, and the effect is slightly unharmonious, tense, suspenseful. I think. But don’t ask me. I told you. I’m not a musician.
But Debussy was not the first to use the chromatic scale. Not by many centuries, in fact. What seemed so revolutionary at the end of the nineteenth century was not new at all. To find its roots, we go back to 1590, to a palace near Naples. The dead body of the Duke of Andria lay on the floor, wearing a woman’s nightdress, covered in bloody wounds and with brain oozing from a gunshot wound to the head. Beneath, his body was pierced through with holes made by a sword. Another body lay on the bed, female, Donna Maria d’Avalos, wife of Carlo Gesualdo. She, too, was covered in blood, her throat cut, and with wounds to her arms, her torso and her face. The sexual organs of both had been mutilated.
There was no doubt that the jealous Gesualdo had killed his wife and her lover. He had been seen to enter the room, shouting angrily, to emerge in a while covered in blood, then to go back in because he thought that he hadn’t completely killed the couple.
Now I’m not saying that all art comes from such

trauma. Many painters and authors are quite nice people. Several musicians have successful careers without once having to commit bloody murder. Yet the terrible acts of that night seemed to stir something in Gesualdo. He got away with murder (literally) because he was a prince. But from that day he retreated from life. The corpses of the couple were left to decompose in the palace. Gesualdo began to consort with witches and to embark on strange affairs with young men. He shunned public life, which is probably just as well.
Gesualdo had always been a composer, and the trauma of that evening affected his music. He wrote mostly madrigals, but he twisted the established rules of music into dark, discordant
pieces, eschewing the classical scales and harmonies in a way that would not resurface for centuries. He set about recruiting musicians to perform his works in his castle, for his pleasure alone. The music is dark and richly chromatic, almost avant garde, but, above all, turbulent, tortured, wild. That evening in the bedroom of the palace is never far from the surface.
It’s not music for elevators. Or for dinner parties. I wouldn’t play it in the car on the M25. But it’s worth finding and listening to, if you want to feel really depressed. You don’t have to understand the theory. Here was a flame that burned far too fiercely, and then was forgotten. I’ll never listen to Debussy in the same way again.

R ogue or doorstep traders, scammers and faulty used car sales are three of the biggest
issues combatted by Trading Standards in Essex. To help you avoid the most common tricks con-artists use, Essex Trading Standards has released a series of animated videos which are available to view on youtube; Rogue traders: https://goo.gl/ssok4y Scams: https://goo.gl/M8BfkN Used cars: https://goo.gl/rl02Fa Cllr Anne Brown, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Corporate, Communities and Customers, said: “These animations are a fantastic way to raise awareness of the dangers of rogue or doorstep trading, scams and buying a used car. Some traders operate purely to con you out of your money, and although Trading Standards are experienced in dealing with these issues we still need your help to ensure your family member, friend or neighbour does not become a victim.
Trading Standards receive more complaints about used cars than anything else, so we hope that the animation will stop people being taken for a ride when purchasing a vehicle. If you are concerned that someone you know is being targeted please call Trading Standards to report the issue.”
Rogue traders
Be Sure at the Door is a partnership between Essex Trading Standards, Essex Police and Age UK
encouraging elderly residents to say no to cold calling rogue traders. If you need any work carried out on your home it is recommended you use a trader on the Buy with Confidence Scheme. A Buy with Confidence trader has been audited and approved by Trading Standards and you can find the nearest three to your postcode by calling 03454 040 506 or visiting buywithconfidence.gov.uk
Scams
Essex Trading Standards will launch their Too Good to Be True scams campaign this summer. Every year thousands of Essex residents are targeted by scams through emails, phone calls and letters with fake prize draws, lotteries, offers and competitions. These scams will often ensnare people by promising a very tantalising prize for a very low fee, but it doesn’t take long for those small payments to add up. Trading Standards #2Good2bTrue campaign advises: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
Used cars
Some used car dealers may mislead potential customers or cover up issues with a car to make a sale. Trading Standards receives more complaints about this than anything else. The used car animation gives examples of actions a consumer can do to make sure the car they are buying is fit for purpose.
If you need advice and guidance in regard to any consumer issue please call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline, who handle calls for Trading Standards on 03454 040 506.

WHO ARE WE AND WHY? W e are Chartered Financial Planners
providing independent financial advice to both the public and business community. As a Chartered firm we have to be able to demonstrate our professional commitment to raising standards of knowledge, capability and ethical practice. We use this knowledge and skill to deliver the highest quality of advice, placing our client’s interests at the heart of what we do. Our clients always come first. Why, is a simple story. Our financial planners have all had experienced careers with banks, insurance companies and other financial advice firms, but most of these firms had a common problem: a lot of the decisions they made were based on what was best for their business rather than what was best for their clients.
At DGS our decisions are based on what is best for our clients. We don’t sell products, we build solutions. By getting to know you, and understanding your needs and goals we are able to implement a plan to help you achieve them. We view our relationships with our clients as long term and we maintain regular contact, reviewing and adapting our advice as our clients’ circumstances change. Our aim for the future is to continue to grow our business by offering our clients a first class financial advice service that is tailored to their individual needs. Whether you are looking to obtain capital growth on your investments and pension funds, or whether you require a regular income to sustain you in retirement, the advisers at DGS are here to help you in every way they can. TO ARRANGE A FREE FINANCIAL HEALTH CHECK PLEASE CONTACT CHRIS HAIGH OR JEFF BRADLEY, CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNERS AT DGS IFA ON 0208 524 8521.

Advertising locally works…
“We have been committed to The Inside Magazine for only 2 months now and can see a long standing business relationship developing. The Inside Magazine understood the requirements of our business and its needs and historically we knew they could deliver. Thanks to The Inside Magazines' efforts we have generated a larger database and our clientele has grown dramatically. Being new advertisers within this magazine we understood it normally takes at least 6 months to get recognised/noticed but this month’s advert we have had over 10 leads/enquiries all of which have turned into business/sales. The decision was made not just on price but also because of the response and feedback we heard back from other advertisers. The Inside Magazine team have been professional and courteous at all times and the scheme has been a great benefit to Abbey Antiques & Furnishings/The Abbey Group. We have no hesitation in recommending The Inside Magazine to future companies/businesses but should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank You and Kind Regards” -Lisa Cannings - Director, Abbey Antiques, Furniture Repairs (March, 2016)
