A Smooth Start It has been a smooth start to the year for most at school. Students have settled
into classes and begun their learning programs. Students in Kinder have had
their first day (with no tears from the children!) and looked remarkably fresh at
the end of their first day of school. When asked, they all said to me they were
going to come back to school the next day, Wednesday. Well done Kinder and
Mrs Piccoli, and helpers Lisa and Clint. Well done to the parents and carers
who had the children ready, in mind and body, for their beginning at school.
Year 7 students, some of whom were initially a little apprehensive, have all
settled into routine and are much better at finding the various rooms used for
their lessons.
Swimming The first day of our swimming carnival took place on Tuesday. It involved all
students in K-6 who were 8 years (this year) and older. The day had a very
positive atmosphere with a number of records broken and a very high level of
participation. War cries and team colours were a feature of the day. A large
number of parents were on hand to witness the athletic displays in the pool and
we were pleased to have parents participate in the parent-teacher-student race.
Year 12 students helped throughout the day and competed in the
aforementioned race. There was a suggestion Mr Cook might have jumped
slightly early at the start of this race. I believe the matter is still under
consideration by the carnival umpire. The second day of the carnival will feature
students of Year 7-12 and this will take place on Friday of this week (weather
permitting).
K-6 Parent-Teacher meetings K-6 parent-teacher meetings will be held on Monday. They operate 4.30-
5.30pm. Class members may also attend. Having parents and teachers ‘on the
same page’ ensures there are no inconsistencies in the messages children
receive. Parents are also better placed to support the work being undertaken at
home and staff are better placed to understand a child with knowledge of their
home life. Parents are encouraged to attend these meetings.
CHS Zone Volleyball at ER Next Tuesday Evans River will host the CHS Zone Volleyball Championships.
When the school was designed, resourcing was sought to enable the students
of our school to witness first hand high level sporting events. This was done by
ensuring we had the facilities to host top level events. Days like next Tuesday
provide students with the opportunity to see first hand the standard required to
be a top performer at the Zone level. In recent years, such exposure has led to
increasing numbers of our students aspiring to, and succeeding, in higher level

CANTEEN NEWS
Welcome back everyone. I hope your festive
season was great and you are all ready for a
busy 2014. Last year the canteen exceeded all
expectations with wonderful profits. This could
not have happened without all the amazing
people that have given so much to our great
canteen/school. I would like to sincerely thank
all volunteers. In particular Charmayne Stevens,
who volunteered her time, her home produce
and so many wonderful ideas. Charmayne has
been a tremendous support. Thanks to all my
volunteers and I hope 2014 is every bit as good
as last year.
Your friendly canteen supervisor Fay

Our Kindergarten students had their first day on Tuesday 4th February . What a great group,
not one tear and beautifully behaved. Here are some photos of their first day with their teach-
er, Mrs Piccoli and her helpers, Lisa MacFarlane & Clint Merton.
The Year 2-6 Swimming Carnival was
a great success. Beautiful weather and
lots of great swimming. Thank you to
Jo Fardy and Jan Hobbins for cooking
the BBQ lunch. Thank you to our
volunteer senior students, Ben Baum,
Billy Hounslow, Kirra Rizza, Ashley
Bell, Josh Blokland & Tanika
McKenna who worked all day
assisting the teachers and making sure
that the swimmers were safe.
The photos show a couple of the
houses doing their war cries, some
happy faces enjoying the day and a
very determined Eric Redman heading
for the finish line.
The High School carnival will take
place this Friday, 7th February.

Gymnastics in Evans Head
UPDATE
A big thank you to all the families who
registered their interest in gymnastics
2014. It is amazing to see how many
families in our community are
interested. Unfortunately the club we
had lined up to run things has pulled
out. We are now looking for an
alternative club or coach to come to
Evans Head. We are still positive we can
make it happen. Thanks for your
support.
