Le Tour Is Coming….The world’s greatest sporting event – the Tour de France- will be here on Sunday 6 July 2014 attracting thousands to cheer on the world’s cycling elite.

The peloton approaches Huddersfield at Ainley Top. The cyclists face a fast descent along the A629 to the ring road (A62), where they will turn right down Chapel Hill (A616) and out through Lockwood towards Honley and Holmfirth (A6024). At Holme village, the ascent begins in earnest as the racers attack the iconic Holme Moss climb. At the 1,720ft summit, the riders will head into the Peak District before turning towards Sheffield and sprinting to the finish line.

In Huddersfield, we expect large crowds at Ainley Top and around the ring road. There will be an official Tour de France hub in St George’s Square, with big screens, facilities, food and drink and entertainment.

On race day, the route, the roads which join on to the route as well as some additional roads such as St George’s Square will begin closing from very early in the morning.

All affected roads will be closed to traffic by 7.30am at the latest, so if you are planning to go anywhere by car, you will need to set off early and plan to arrive well before the final closures are in place. Because of this, we expect severe congestion and advise that you leave plenty of time for your journey and only travel in affected areas if you have to.

If you are planning to open your business on the day of the race, please think about how your staff will travel to and from work, rescheduling deliveries and being aware of how busy the town centre is likely to be. You can find a full list of the closures and an interactive map which will bring up the areas affected at www.kirklees.gov.uk/letour

As well as road closures on race day, the entire length of the route (that’s through Yorkshire, not just in Kirklees) will be turned into a tow-away zone from Friday until the race ends on Sunday. This is so that the route is clear of vehicles before the road needs to be closed. All vehicles still on the route by noon on Saturday will be towed away and owners will be fined, so please help by making your customers and staff aware.

You can find further information and advice at www.kirklees.gov.uk/letour.

Le Tour is coming……. Safety is paramount! West Yorkshire Police and the North

East Counter Terrorism Unit have been

on their rounds to ensure that

communities, businesses and retailers

are aware of the potential threat that

could be associated with the Tour De

France race in July.

Inside Huddersfield has decided to

follow in the same vain by supporting

West Yorkshire Police in spreading their

message.

So it here we go…...

1. The best thing people can do is to be

extra vigilant, look out for people acting

suspiciously, maybe taking photos of

buildings or sat watching locations and

taking notes.

2. Watch out for unattended luggage or

parcels, if you are genuinely concerned

then please phone 999 straight away.

3. Specifically for businesses and

retailers. Please consider how often fire

drills are held, what the evacuation

policy and procedure is, including

where the muster points are located.

Classic terrorist activity is to plant a

second explosive device at the muster

point to maximise casualties. So bomb

evacuation must be different to fire

evacuation!

This information has been included to

in any way frighten people, or make

them paranoid but to heighten

awareness.

In all cases individuals must call 999 if

they suspect anything. It is vitally

important to be clear and precise, the

police will organise things, and will call

in the Bomb disposal team if they

believe it to be necessary.

The Welcome Centre – food bank and

more.

The Welcome Centre supports

individuals and families in extreme

crisis in the local community of

Huddersfield. They give practical

support in the form of Food, Toiletries,

Bedding, household items, Towels and

clothes. They also provide information

and sign-post service users to

specialist support, if required.

The Centre, a registered charity and

incorporated company, has been in

Huddersfield for over 20 years and

helps anyone in South Kirklees

(including all the valleys and villages)

who is referred by any of the frontline

services in our community.

Last year, the Centre saw a massive

increase in the need for their service,

particularly by families in crisis.

More than just food!

They gave out over 8600 packs and

expect this to increase this year.

The Welcome Centre’s service relies on

food and monetary donations to be

able to continue supporting the

community – If anyone is interested in

helping please contact the office on:

Charities and community groups from

across Kirklees attended a special grant

presentation organised by One

Community, the Kirklees Community

Foundation, at Chadwick Lawrence

Solicitors on Friday 11th April.

10 lucky groups received grant cheques

totalling £4,000, from the Mayor of

Kirklees’ Charity Fund.

The Mayor, Cllr Martyn Bolt, has been

supporting One Community, through-

out his Mayoral year, and in April he

distributed the proceeds of his latest

fundraising efforts.

One of the grant beneficiaries, Hep-

worth Junior and Infant Primary School,

received £262.74 to fund the purchase

of additional items for their weekly

Lego Club. The club was started initially

for younger pupils and those with

special needs. However, children from

all age groups are now participating and

as a result the children’s imagination

and problem-solving skills are

flourishing.

The group 20-40 Moldgreen, based in

Huddersfield, will benefit from £265.00,

which will now help to fund their

weekly cooking classes, eventually

leading to participation in a food

co-operative. Participants will learn

about healthy eating and develop cook-

ing skills to share with their families.

Paul Johnson, from One Community,

said: “It’s great to be able to present yet

another tranche of funding to local

community groups. We are extremely

grateful to the Mayor for supporting

our work, and for coming along to

present his latest grants.

“Since 2011, we have awarded 150

grants to local good causes with a value

of £100,000. And it is pleasing to see

that we are now beginning to make a

real difference in many communities

across Kirklees.”

One Community was launched in May

010, to encourage local giving with the

aim of establishing a central

endowment fund, from which grants

can be distributed across Kirklees, sup-

porting local voluntary and charitable

activity. The foundation works with

both businesses and individuals, and

helps to manage their charitable giving.

LOST BOY RACER

Wednesday 25 – Friday 27 June, 7.30pm at the Lawrence Batley Thea-tre

Sean Racer used to be an energetic wildcat youth hooked, on cycling. Now he’s a 40-something tax inspector on the brink of a personal crisis.

Turning to Claude, an oddball ex-pro cycle mechanic, and encouraged by the wily Linda, a serial tax evader keen to distract him from taking a closer look at her books, Sean hatches a plan to get his life back on track and on two wheels. He will fulfill a youthful dream; to ride the Tour de France. That’s right, he’s going the distance, albeit on a bike

on rollers in his shed. Will he make it to the finish?

LOST BOY RACER is a quirky northern comedy-drama with a touch of blood, sweat and tears, a large dose of fun, some off-the-wall bike action and a love story of sorts.

This world premiere is part of the Yorkshire Festival 2014, the county wide cultural festival in celebration of Le Tour de France Grand Départ.

HTCLP members can get tickets for LOST BOY RACER for just £10, saving you up to £4. Simply call the LBT box office on 01484 430528 and quote ‘HTCPL OFFER’.

It’s a Knock Out was a great success again this year. The six teams that took part raced and chased for the 2014 it’s a Knockout Challenge title.

The winners were, Brewfitt / Paxman Coolers with Abzorb coming in a very close second. Wm Sykes, Stafflex, Kirklees Stadium Development (John Smith’s Stadium), Sodexo and Huddersfield Town took part in the fun and games too. Huddersfield Town did exceptionally well this year, not only did they not get disqualified but they came in third. Well done and THANK YOU to everyone that played a part, we had fun on the day and it is a great opportunity to network and put the team through some team building activities but when the day is over and we reflect on what we have achieved, it was good to know that this year the Huddersfield Town Foundation benefited from the funds raised.

The Town Foundation’s Fund Raising Officer, Mandy Taylor said “Our mission is to make a significant difference to the lives of children and young people in our community and any donation made is directed into innovative and unique initiatives including our “Early Kick-Off Breakfast Clubs” which have served over 110,000 healthy and delicious free breakfasts across 15 clubs in Kirklees”

Central Lodge news

After reading an article in the Huddersfield Examiner regarding the University and its international links, Joe Marsden of The Huddersfield Central Lodge Hotel made the following comment.

“The news regarding the overseas visitors to the town prompted me to look at our statistics for 2013. It shows that our guests are very multinational.

81% were from the UK, 5% from the USA, 5% from the EU, 4% from China, 1% from India and 4% from the rest of the world.

Approximately 72% of all overseas

Members news Baa Baa Brighouse – Have you any Wool? Baa Baa Brighouse is a brand new

online knitwear and yarn store which

opened its virtual woolly doors to the

public in April.

The shop, which specialises in unique

hand knitted accessories and Yorkshire

yarns has been set up by current Editor

of The Scallymag and Huddersfield

Partnership member Elaine Jinks-

Turnerr.

Elaine, a mother-of-three, was taught

to knit as a child but rediscovered her

passion for the craft following a lengthy

bout of post-natal depression following

the birth of her daughter, Florence,

aged three.

She has since turned her “therapy” into

a business and has sourced beautiful

knitting yarns from across Yorkshire,

the home of the woollen and textile

industry, in order to showcase the very

best the county has to offer.

Elaine said: “I knit a range of accesso-

ries from the finest yarns available in-

cluding scarves, shawls, wraps, hats,

gloves and bags – each one a little

different from the last, with a definite

vintage feel.

Baa Baa Brighouse stocks yarn from the

popular West Yorkshire Spinners in

Keighley, County Alpacas in Sowerby

Bridge, Eden Cottage Yarns in Leeds

and Laura’s Loom in the North York-

shire Dales> She stocks knitwear from

well-known designer, Erika Knight,

whose British yarn is spun at Laxton’s in

Guisley and world famous knitwear

designer, Louisa Harding, who is based

in Holmfirth. All of the yarn produced

has strong connections to Yorkshire.

Baa Baa Brighouse is committed to

using wool in at least 75% of the

knitted products it sells and as a result

has joined the Campaign for Wool,

whose patron is HRH the Prince of

Wales.

Elaine said the next step for Baa Baa

Brighouse is to exhibit at local artisan

craft fairs and markets in and around

Calderdale and Kirklees, making it a

truly local business with a physical

presence.

Baa Baa Brighouse will also be hosting

learn to knit workshops in Brighouse

and beyond, details of which will be

posted on the website

A little help goes a long way Signs Express were very happy to help

Meze Restaurant in Brighouse when

severe winds at the end of 2013 blew

down part of their 14.5m wide fascia

sign.

Signs Express stepped in and replaced

the whole fascia with a smart new

design reflecting the well-earned high

reputation that the restaurant has.

The new signage incorporates five

columns to match the wide fascia sign,

all of which is wrapped in digitally print-

ed vinyl graphics. To finish it off, the

main sign has stainless steel 3-D letter-

ing with internal LED illumination, and

five down lighters, one over each

column. Mr Kurnaz of Meze was so

pleased with the new signage that he is

already in discussions with

Signs Express about producing further

signage to enhance the restaurant.
