“For a great door and effec-tual is opened unto me, andthere are many adversaries.” 1Corinthians 16:9
In a Charlie Brown comic,Linus is seated with a troubledlook on his face, his security
blanket over his shoulder, his thumb in his mouth. Turning to Lucy,he asks, “Why are you always so anxious to criticize me?” Her re-sponse: “I just think I have a knack for seeing other peopleʼs faults.”“What about your own faults?” Linus asks. Without hesitation, Lucyreplied, “I have a knack of overlooking them.”
Do you have a “Lucy” in your life? Welcome to reality! Along withopen doors, as the Apostle Paul notes above, there are adversaries. Here is a brief formula for dealing with them:1. Stop being surprised by the presence of adversaries. Thatʼs life,
dummy!2. Know that discouragers often show up at the same time as
opportunities. Expect it.3. Consider that God is still at work opening doors even though
there may be adversaries. Someone said, “The door of opportunity swings on the hinges of opposition.”
4. Keep your focus on the opportunities. Acknowledge there are adversaries, but donʼt obsess over them.
5. Put your confidence in God to bless the open door and not the criticism.
And though not latent in the Scripture above, here is one final pieceof advice: Even if you have an adversarial “Lucy” in your life, donʼt bea “Lucy” in someone elseʼs.
