What is Input?

Any data or instructions used by a computer.

Input devicesKeyboards

Scanners

Digital Camera

Mouse

Joystick, Light Pen

Translates data into a form that the system unit can process.

Keyboard

Keyboard is a typewriter style device, which uses an arrangement of

buttons or keys, to act as electronic switches.

Types of Keyboard:

Standard: Desktop computer keyboards, such as the 101 key US

traditional keyboards or the 104 key Windows keyboards, include numbers,

alphabetic characters and a variety of function keys.

Handheld: Handheld ergonomic keyboards are designed to be held like a

game controller, and can be used as such, instead of laid out flat on top of a

table surface.

Thumb sized: Smaller external keyboards have been introduced for

devices without a built-in keyboard, such as smart phones.

Scanner

Image scanner: For digitizes a two-dimensional image.

Barcode reader: For reads the data encoded in a barcode.

Scanner (radio): For searching and receiving radio broadcasts.

3D scanner: For digitizes the three-dimensional shape of a real object.

Scanner is an input device which scans the object

into the computer.

Barcode Reader

A barcode reader (or barcode scanner)

is an electronic device for reading

printed barcodes. Like a flatbed

scanner, it consists of a light source, a

lens and a light sensor translating

optical impulses into electrical ones.

Additionally, nearly all barcode

readers contain decoder circuitry

analyzing the barcode's image data

provided by the sensor.

Digital Camera

A digital camera (digicam) is

a camera that encodes digital

images and videos digitally and stores

them for later reproduction. Digital and

film cameras share an optical system,

typically using a lens with a variable

diaphragm to focus light onto an image

pickup device.

Pointing Device

A pointing device is an input interface that

allows a user to input spatial (i.e., continuous

and multi-dimensional) data to a computer.

Common Pointing Devices:

†MouseMechanical

Optical

†Joystick

†Light Pen

†Stylus

What is Output?

A display device is an output device that visually

conveys text, graphics, and video information.

Speakers

Computer speakers, are speakers

external to a computer, that disable

the lower fidelity built-in speaker.

Computer speakers were introduced

by Altec Lansing in 1990.

Screen (Monitor)

A monitor or a display is an electronic

visual display for computers. The monitor

comprises the display device, circuitry and

an enclosure. The display device in modern

monitors is typically a thin film transistor

liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) thin

panel, while older monitors used a cathode

ray tube (CRT) about as deep as the screen

size.

Printer

A printer is an external hardware

device responsible for taking

computer data and generating

a hard copy of that data. Printers

are one of the most used

peripherals on computers and are

commonly used to print text,

images, and photos.

Projector

A projector is an optical device

that projects an image (or moving

images) onto a surface, commonly

a projection screen.

Most projectors create an image

by shining a light through a small

transparent lens, but some newer

types of projectors can project the

image directly, by using lasers.

Page 15: Input Output Devices

Plotter

The plotter is a computer printer for

printing vector graphics. A plotter

gives a hard copy of the output. It

draws pictures on paper using a pen.

Plotters are used to print designs of

ships and machines, plans for

buildings.
