The Academic Award was organised to test students from Year 7 to Year 11 in the fields of English and Arabic spelling, as well as, in the field of Mathematics. The event was split into a Middle School Category (Years 7-9) and a High School Category Years 10 & 11). The competition included a timed individual round of 3 questions in each discipline followed by a buzzer round.

Students showed exemplary skill in all areas and DIA won the Middle School and Overall Award for combined score over the 2 categories. The students from all schools enjoyed themselves and created a close and exciting competition. One student wrote an account of her experience during the day as follows:

On competition day, we didn’t stress too much since there was no way to prepare and no way that we could know what questions they were going to ask us. We were mostly just excited that we would be

competing together. On the bus, we all discussed strategies that would help us excel in the competition.

These strategies included seating arrangements for each subject, and verifying each answer before we submitted. The nerves finally hit us when we entered the competition room, but luckily for my group, we were participating after the middle school team. In the end, we lost our section, however, due to how well the middle school team did, the point difference made up for it, and DIA ended up coming first overall!

I really enjoyed this experience overall, and hope to participate again next year. Shamma Younus, Year 10A

HINDI MOTHER TONGUE CELEBRATES GRANDPARENTS’ WEEK

Hindi Mother Tongue students celebrated Grandparents’ week, where some grandparents visited us and shared some

stories. It was an initiative to encourage both children and their families to come together and share their learning and

further enhance their vocabulary. In return, children thanked them by making cards. It was an

absolute pleasure to see this intercommunication.

Year 4 camp

Year 4 students had a great camp experience on Feb 8th and 9th. Students worked in groups and showed they can be true collaborators. It was great to see how Year 4 students took care of each other and interacted with one another outside the classroom environment. You were excellent risk takers Year 4!

PLANET PRESENTATIONS BY YEAR 4

Year 4 students worked hard to “create” their own planets for their summative assessment. Students followed a

checklist which reminded them that they needed to include the atmosphere, gravity, forces, seasons, day/night, tides

etc. on their planet for their chosen animal/plant/human life. Parents, teachers and peers were invited in to listen to

the wonderful presentations by Year 4 students.

DIA CAREER FAIR 2017

On Tuesday, 14 February, we were delighted to host the second

annual DIA Career Week, a joint parent/school management led

initiative to give students in the Secondary School an introduction

to the various different careers and professions in the world of

work.

Year 10 students had the opportunity to engage with

twenty-eight different professionals from a wide spectrum of

different career backgrounds and ask questions related to their

work, education and qualifications in their particular profession.

These professionals volunteered their time and commitment

following communication from the school, with some – but not

all – being parents of children at the school. Students were

organized on a mini-seminar basis so students would have the

opportunity to become better informed about the full range of

careers being highlighted.

It was a tremendous experience for our students. Students

came away from the experience very enthused about the

different career prospects and definitely feeling like they got

some inside-track information and insights about future

prospects. Alongside this event, we also had other activities for

other Year Levels focused on careers and employment

planning.

DIA would like to thank the participants involved in helping us organize this event.

THIMUN HAGUE 2017 BY AANYA BAHL

When one is told to think of the Netherlands, scenic images of tulips and windmills come to mind, with intricately decorated wooden clogs occasionally placed in the viewing frame. However,

for the seventeen of us that went to participate in this year’s THIMUN conference, the Netherlands brings completely different thoughts to mind, inducing nostalgia-filled memories of committee debates and research reports, afternoons in Amsterdam and long bus rides spent humming cheesy songs from 2007.

The theme for THIMUN 2017 was “Borders in a Globalized World”, completely apt in context to the globe evolving around us. The conference, attracting over 3,500 students from 200 schools around the world is the biggest global Model UN conference to exist, and was founded in 1981, making it the oldest by far. This year, DIA’s assigned delegation was Uruguay, and with delegates spanning committees such as the Security Council and the Disarmament Commissions, we had quite a striking presence. As if that were not enough, two of our students, Sara Atassi and Dharkann Sainani had the opportunity to serve as student officers and were extremely diligent and effective in handling their assigned positions.

Throughout the period of the five-day conference, we were able to witness an unprecedented level of debate, and were exposed to issues imperative to the twenty-first century. Personally, it was also heart-warming to witness the countless efforts by UN aid agencies such as the UNHRC and UNICEF, which had set up stalls at the entrance of the building and constantly encouraged delegates to contribute to their causes. As students who are blessed with roofs over our heads and food on our tables, we often wonder if our efforts to multinational agencies providing humanitarian aid are helpful, and seeing the work done by

past UN agencies and the ones present at the conference really put things into perspective.

Apart from time spent at the conference, we were also allotted a couple of days to explore Amsterdam and a small hamlet called Vollendam, during which we visited the Van Gogh museum, the Anne Frank House, a cheese factory, a clog factory, and windmills, among many other attractions. As Vishank Rughwani, a delegate of the Disarmament Commission puts it, “it gave me an up close and personal view of European culture and history which is difficult to access in Dubai.”

In retrospect, our trip to The Hague not only gave us access to an MUN conference unlike any of us have seen before, but also to Dutch history and culture- something we all cherished and learned from. Without a doubt, every one of us who went can say that we learned more than we ever thought we would, not only about our assigned topics, but about ourselves as well.

YOUNGEST FINALIST at UAE AI & ROBOTICS FOR GOOD AWARDS 2017

FADIL ELEDATH, YEAR 11C, DIGITAL DESIGN

UAE AI & Robotics for Good Awards is an annual competition, a global platform for innovation, focusing on the prac-tical side of technology for the betterment of society.

This year I was one of the 11 finalists and the youngest participant competing in the competition with universities and multinational companies for a one-million-dirham award.

In collaboration with my friend Michael, we built and presented the project Trashberry - a full technology enabled ecosystem that helps in the disposal and recycling of cans and bottles.

The Trashberry system has been designed to instill a sense of responsibility in consumers thereby reducing improper disposal of waste and helping the recycling process. The prototype built from recycled materials comprises a vending machine and a waste sorting machine. The system creates an account for every customer that uses it. Every product within the vending machine has a unique RFID code, so when a customer purchases an item, that product's tag is recorded under the customer's account. When the consumed item is disposed in the waste sorting machine, the item is identified and disposed in the appropriate recycling bin. The consumer is awarded points for recycling which when accumulated can be redeemed for future purchases.

The machine, built from recycled electronic parts uses Raspberry Pi’s, an EV3 and other components from LEGO Mindstorms along with RFID readers and tags. Various programming languages have been used here - Python, Robot C, SQL, PHP and a host of others, to interconnect the various components to ensure ease of use at the consumer’s end. This was the most challenging part of the project. By using Trashberry, Dubai can improve and meet its waste management goals. The project currently focuses on the beverage industry. If we can change Dubai’s recycling rates of aluminum cans alone, which is much lower than the 67% world average, it would have an immense positive impact on our city.

This wasn’t simply a project that two teenagers worked on, using old broken printers and expired metro tickets. This wasn’t something we built to win a competition. Trashberry Inc. was designed with a vision, to deliver a holistic solution to end waste to a proactive community. Our demonstration with the soda can was the first step to the solution to end waste. The first step to a sustainable Dubai.

LINK BETWEEN ENGLISH & ARABIC

During this activity, students were asked to translate books studied in English classes over their MYP years and this allowed students to compare/contrast the Arabic and English languages and recognize the depth of each text. We were able to study a variety of books ranging for "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "Things Fall Apart" to "Romeo and Juliet" and "Of Mice and Men". This task was extremely beneficial as it taught each one of us the importance of the morals within the stories as well as the need to study and compare languages more often. The Arabic language is far more complex than that of English Literature and so translation was a challenge as we were to discuss the chosen novels in detail and use specific terms which would not be found in the English language.
