Welcome to the rst edition of Innovatus. In the crowded modern media eld, where informationalaccess is omnipresent, personalized, and often intriguing; we appreciate you taking the time to readour rst addition.

If you are planning on stopping after the rst 140 to 160 characters, we have a Tweet for you to satisfy yourcraving - but realize this is the equivalent of choosing a Hershey Kiss over lounging in the sun with a wholechocolate cake at your disposal. But for those Hershey Kiss lovers:

The ELC believes entrepreneurial endeavors & leadershipdevelopment serve as fertile ground for innovation and drivesindividual growth and personal fulllment.

Innovatus is Latin for innovation and we at the ELC chose the namefor several reasons. By using the Latin version we wanted to drawdistinct parallels to the timelessness of inspired, entrepreneurialinnovations. As Professor Alison Morrison wrote, It is proposedthat entrepreneurs are travelers through time. Times may change, but the motivation, emotion, drive, purpose, and mania ofentrepreneurs remain constant. Economic challenges throughoutthe ages have provided for opportunistic innovation and our work atthe ELC is designed to encourage and enliven opportunity-seekingaction.

Another rationale for our Innovatus tag is to focus on the actionableaspect of our work. Innovation sounds scientically dauntingsometimes and conjures up images of Einstein, Jobs, Bezo, Edison,

Gates, and Zuckerberg, but everyone who has had the courage to trya dierent approach in life, work, or play has participated in the foundational aspects of innovation. Thefoundational aspect is learning, deep emotive learning where mistakes and failures are expected. Innovatuscontent is designed to inspire learning and provoke future inquiry.

Of course we will unabashedly promote our work at the ELC but we also hope to solicit content from othermembers of the ELC region. Our goal is to encourage student, faculty, and community member writingwhich embodies innovative thought, entrepreneurial endeavors, and leadership development.

Because of my time spent in Hawaii over the last four years there was a temptation to add Ipo to Innovatus.Ipo is a Hawaiian term for lover or sweetheart. In the end, we decided against island alliteration and wentwith the more succinct one word title. Be forewarned, we may try and infuse the Aloha spirit and a sense of

Ohana throughout our work and Innovatus content.

We hope you enjoy the rst edition of Innovatus and ask that you take some time to provide feedback orspread the word among your network of friends, colleagues, leaders, followers, and Ohana.

Aloha Dr. Patrick ByrneELC - Coordinator

Shakleton showed a certain discomfort in the formal classroom seing. He complained that

schools didnt make things interesting. Shakleton wrote, I wanted to be freesome boys taketo school like ducks to waterbut for a few rough spirits the system is chang, not good, andthe sooner they are pitched into the world the beer. I was one of those.

Ernest Shackletons failed 1914 expedition tocross Antarctica is a fascinating survival tale.It also provides insightful lessons about howfailure provides rich leverage towards personaland organizational growth. Timeless leadershiplessons punctuate the story of how twenty-sevencrew members aboard the ship Endurance become

completely embedded in arctic ice for close to twoyears, keep their sense of sanity and well-being,and eventually survive against incredible odds.

In spite of the relentless hardship of living isolatedin the most challenging environment on earth, theexpeditions members thrived and coalesced asa team. Two years of limited linear progress arecounterbalanced with expediential intrinsic growthof the each member of Shackletons team; growththat is traced back to timeless leadership practicesof Shackleton himself. His leadership practices

permeated the crews disposition and became thenormative culture of the team.

Many organizations, including public schools, have been mired in their own relentless iceblock consisting of poor public perceptions, stagnant international rankings, and frozenbudgetary constraints. Like the Endurance, some government, non-prot, and protorganizations as a whole seem frozen in time seemingly unable to make real systemicprogress. Pockets of excellence exist; however, rising tides of expectations and calls for asystemic solutions based on managing risks and leveraging innovation.

During the nal, most challenging part of the Endurance saga, a small team sailed in asmall life raft through pounding, frozen seas to reach an island whaling station. Oncethey miraculously reached land, the small team had to circumvent a frozen mountainrange to reach the station on the opposite side of the island. Dozens of aempts to scalethe range lead to dead ends and heartbreaking retreats.

Eventually through the courage and persistence of the small team, the whaling stationwas reached and a rescue ship reached the remaining endurance crew members. Withoutthe bravery of this small team, the Endurance crew would surely have perished. Like theEndurance team, small teams willing to persist and try innovative approaches will mostlikely sail on the seas of success, in spite of the rough economic currents

With the rise of social mediaand other platforms designedto reach people and shareorganizational eorts, the ELClaunched an ELC Facebookpage to share information.Upcoming events, recentprojects, and relevant linkshave been shared.

However, social media is acrowded eld with over 800million users. Improved real-time information streams meanFacebook users are geingmore and more selective aboutlikes and who they follow. For a business or organization, measures of interactionare helpful to determineappropriate and engagingcontent. To avoid FacebookFatigue, data analysis serves

    as a helpful tool.

Included below are someELC metrics availablethrough Facebook insights. Inaddition to the basic insightinformation shown below,an excel spreadsheet can bedownloaded from Facebookwith the potential for furtherdata analysis.

Using the downloaded Excelspreadsheet, quick dataanalysis can take place. Belowis a chart that shows the ageand gender of average dailyinteraction. An organizationcan examine this data andformulate questions toconsider.

    Further analysis of individual

post data showedthe week ofSeptember 28thwhen the JimiHendrix post(upper right)appeared was themost engagingfor the 24 plusdemographic. This makes sense

because JimiHendrixs culturalrelevance is higher among the24 + demographic. This is oneexample of the type of targetedanalysis that is possible withfree Facebook data. If you areinterested in Facebook dataanalysis support you can reachout to the ELC at [email protected].

Mr. Wagner, our CHS Business Academy teacher, told us the class would be going on a eld trip to ShippensburgUniversity. The trip would include visiting the ELC - Entrepreneurial Leadership Center for a presentation. All of thestudents were eager to get out of school for a majority of the day.

When we arrived on campus we all felt the intimidation of being on a college campus. Important-looking businesspeople walked the halls. We walked up what seemed like a billion stairs until we nally reached the fourth oor. Wehad arrived at the ELC - Entrepreneurial Leadership Center.

At the end of the hallway we entered a room and had a seat. We were excited to hear what the ELC sta would have tosay. We began the presentation by learning a lile bit about entrepreneurial research. We then opened the professionallooking folders that sat in front of us. We then got into teams and participated in a contest. The contest consisted of

making up a game or simulation that demonstrated Pennsylvanias state entrepreneurial standards. In the end we wereall winners and we all learned a lile bit about what it takes to be an entrepreneur. As a bonus we learned the historyand meaning of the Hawaiian Shaka!

The main goal of the ELC - Entrepreneurial Learning Center is to endorse entrepreneurial and innovative activitiesamong the Shippensburg University community. The ELC is open to faculty, students, sta, and people located aroundthroughout the mid-Atlantic region. A person can go to the ELC and receive help when it comes to starting their own

    business or becoming and entrepreneur.

The trip to the ELC was very benecial to us. We learned about entrepreneurship in an interactive way that allowed theclass to be creative and get to know more about becoming an entrepreneur. The trip was a fun way for our class to learnabout real life examples of entrepreneurship without reading about them in a textbook. We are glad we had the oppor-tunity to visit the ELC -Entrepreneurial Leadership Center.
