    TERMS

    FACTS

    MINOR CONCEPTS

Develops different dimensions of knowledge, attitude

and process skills on different stages in life cycle of

    butterfly, through observation, discussion, lecture

method and evaluating by questioning, participating indemonstration work and group discussion.

Egg, larvae, caterpillar, pupa, cocoon, butterfly, life cycle

    1. Life cycle of butterfly consists of egg, larvae,

    pupa (chrysalides), butterfly (imago).

    2. Butterflies lays eggs on young leaves of mulberry

    plants.

    3. Butterfly eggs hatch within few days to few weeks.

    4. Eggs hatches and caterpillar called larva emerges out.

    5. Larvae eats maximum food it can and grows in size.

    6. The larvae creates a cocoon by itself ,encloses in itand remains dormant. The larvae is called chrysalides.

    7. Inside the cocoon the larvae slowly transforms into

    butterfly.

    1. Life cycle of butterfly consists of specific stages

namely embryonic stage, larval stage, pupal stage, and

    adult stage.

    2. Within 5 weeks the life cycle of butterfly completes

    MAJOR CONCEPT

    LEARNING OUTCOME

and metamorphosis of larvae to that of butterfly occurs.

A butterfly has a life cycle that passes through stages like

embryonic, larval, pupal, and adult stage.

    Enables the student to develop

factual knowledge on life cycle of butterfly through

    i. recalling new terms like egg, pupa, larvae etc,

facts and concepts mentioned in content

    analysis.

    ii.

recognising different stages in life cycle of

    butterfly

iii. explaining the stages in the life cycle of

    butterfly

conceptual knowledge about different stages in

    life cycle of butterfly:

    i.

recalling the structures present in each stageof butterfly in the life cycle.

ii. recognising the significance of each stage in the

    life cycle.

iii. explaining the different stages in the life cycle.

iv. comparing the peculiarity of each stage in the

    life cycle.

procedural knowledge on structure, function of

butterfly in each stage in the life cycle through :

    i. differentiating the stages involved in the life

cycle of butterfly butterfly in various stages in

    the life cycle.

    metacognitive knowledge on structure and

function of butterfly in each stage in the life cycle:

    different kinds of butterfly.

ii. identifying each structure of the butterfly in

each stage of the life cycle.

    scientific attitude towards:

    i. knowing more and more about importance of

    butterflies in pollination.

ii. creating awareness about the role of butterfly in

    nature.

    different process skills like:

    i. observing different stages in life cycle.

    ii.

differentiating each stage in the life cycle.

    INTRODUCTION :

    - How many of you have gardens at home?

    - What are the types of plants seen there?

    - What are the different types of flowering

    plants in your garden?

    - Have you seen any birds or insects visit the

    flowers?

    - Who are the frequent visitors?

    - Which insects do you see frequently?

    - Do you know how butterflies maintain their

    species?

    - Ok today we are going to discuss about

    reproduction of butterfly.

    ACTIVITY-I

Students are shown a power point presentation

on the life cycle of a butterfly. Group

discussions are held based on the discussion

    points.

    CONSOLIDATION

    - Life cycle of butterfly with its 4 stages are

    depicted.

    - Egg is seen in the Ist stage and it is tiny,

round, soft with fine ribs present on the

    ACTIVITYII

    - Four students are selected to play the four

stages of the life cycle of butterfly. A role play

    is conducted.

    CONSOLIDATION

    - The 3rd

stage depicts the cocoon wherein the

caterpillar slowly changes into a butterfly. This

    stage is called pupal stage.

    - In Stage 4, butterfly is seen. It is brightly

coloured, flies freely with help of wings and has

3 antennae for sucking nectar from flowers.

The repetitive process of development of

butterfly from egg is called life cycle.

    EGG

Hi friends, do you know who I

am? I am the egg of thebutterfly. I am round, tiny,

soft with fine ribs. I am

    attached to the underside of

    leaves. It takes few days-few

    weeks for me to hatch.

    CATERPILLAR

Hi friends, dont you want to

know who I am? I am the

    caterpillar or larvae. I am

long, worm like, with spine like

    hairs.

    PUPA

    QUESTIONS

    ACTIVITY

    - How many stages are present in the life cycle ofbutterfly?

    - Name the different stages?

    - Explain each stage in detail with diagrams.

    - Prepare a flowchart with diagrams to illustrate life cycle

    of butterfly.

    FOLLOWUPACTIVITY

Prepare a report on the role of butterfly in propagation of plants and the

    role they play in pollination.

    BUTTERFLY

    Hi friends all of you

definitely know who I am. I

    am colourful, can fly freely

    with wings, have 2 antennae

    for sucking nectar. I lay
