ManufactureOnce design and budget are approved, detailed design commences. This includes general arrangement drawings and foundation designs. Detailed fabrication drawings then follow. Once these are fully approved, manufacture can begin. This involves 3D CAD modelling of fabric and the manufacture of steel or timber components, culminating in a series of specialist parts all ready for installation on site.

InstallationWhen it comes to installation our riggers have the experience that makes all the difference. The project manager, briefing the site team on all aspects of the build, leads the installation and makes sure the client is kept up to date with progress and any changes on site, and ensures that a consistent communication flow is present throughout the project.

Initial ConsultationHere we establish an overall brief of what the client is wishing to achieve. This may involve a request to the client for visuals or architectural drawings, as well as attending design meetings and site visits.DesignWith solid brief to hand, Innovative Tensile will offer initial design concepts including fabric types, type of structural support e.g. timber or steel work, rigging options, installation layouts and any extra features such as printing

Budget & QuotationsOnce the client is happy with the design of the product, Innovative Tensile will provide budgets and quotations including the confirmation of sketches or visuals where appropriate.

Interior Innovative Tensile structures take on many forms and often require that extra special attention to detail. Our wealth of knowledge of fabrics, and the way they perform internally, means we understand how they should be best used, can foresee any pitfalls and ultimately find the solution yielding the best result.

For example, a fabric sun shade demands that the structure is the right shape, orientated to screen the tracking sun, made from the correct material to keep enough visible light out, while also being easy to clean and ultimately attractive to look at. All these aspects make it a lot more than just a sun shade.

Other solutions like acoustic screens are also becoming more desirable, as newly designed spaces tend to lack sufficient sound-absorbing materials. Acoustic sails or screens can reduce reverberation times as well as visually soften hard spaces.

Exterior tensioned fabric canopies are what most people associate with fabric structures industry, occupying many a retail development or public space. But, they do take on many other forms. Our portfolio here below shows this width of use, location and of course form, from the ever popular entrance canopy to the increasingly popular school canopy, where outdoor learning demands year-round sun and rain protection for the children.

The exterior environment means we use a specific set of exterior-ready fabrics, from modern coated canvas, through nylon materials to very robust PVC coated polyester fabrics, all offering different UV, water resistant and strength qualities. As part of our package we design, engineer and install the fabric canopy, working both nationally and internationally.

"Tensile fabric" is a term used simply to describe fabric that is under tension, i.e. being pulled in opposing directions. It can take many forms, though its generally based around three shapes: the Cone (or fluted cone), the Double Curve Barrel Vault and the Hypar (or hyperbolic shape).

The fabric form is computer generated using a specific programme for the industry. This 'form' is then converted into flat panel which then can be cut out to create paper patterns or the information can be used to computer cut the panels on a plotter/cutter. Because of the nature of fabrics used, the presence of the double curve and the process of manufacturing, tensioning is always required in order to induce the correct shape and take out any minor creases in the fabric

A good design means efficient manufacture, straight forward installation and ultimately, good value. At Innovative Tensile we are always focused on the design of your fabric structure, making sure it has the right shape, is supported by the most appropriate frame, and is therefore the best overall solution.

At the early stages of the enquiry, we will ask you about the form that you would like the fabric canopy, fabric screen, or ceiling to take, and whether it should be hung, self-supporting, or appear to be floating etc. We do this to make sure we fully understand your expectations, so we can begin to outline a form that works perfectly for you and the application. This briefing process results in a sketch which then, as well as be costed, can be discussed with the client and all other parties involved.

Typically a low - wick strong polyester weave base cloth is coated with PVC coatings to provide weather resistance and finishing PVDF lacquers as top coats to add extra performance. As per the interior and exhibition fabric recommendation, any type of fabric can be used to create a tensile fabric form for exterior use, but considerations to fire rating, water repelling qualities, wind loading, life span, UV breakdown are all factors that can effect the decision of what fabric type. The material is strong and flexible and is used in a wide range of architectural applications including free form and fixed edge structures where full weather protection is required. It is used in structures ranging from market style umbrellas and awnings, carparks, walkways and shelters to pavilions and grandstands and other fixed roof structures.

This material has a typical life expectancy of 20 years.

On site, our team will pay particular attention to setting out, checking that all the site details are 100% in accordance with the drawings, and so making sure that everything is in order from the off. Steel erection will then be carried out, manually or with lifting equipment depending on the size. The fabric will then follow, being installed onto the steel structure itself or fixed using brackets where wind conditions require it. Particular care has to be taken when handing the fabric, as although its tough form and lacquer finish give most fabrics upward of 25 yrs life, care must be taken not to damage the surface when it is folded etc..Tensioning is the final aspect of the installation. This must be carried out in a specific order, tensioning in certain directions where particular details or fabric stretch dictates. The final tension is predetermined by the engineering of the structure, as 'pre-tension' levels must be achieved to make sure the canopy is tensioned to the correct amount to prevent excessive fabric movement under wind and snow loads.

Key to our business, but meaning a lot of different things to different people, we use the term 'rigging' to refer to hardware, usually stainless steel, used for fixing and tensioning canopies into place. The variations in designs, details and sizes are huge, from M5 upward to M36 and beyond, but obviously the size of the rigging section will depend directly upon the load that is being imposed upon it.For interior applications, rigging is generally smaller than exterior, still being used for tensioning but not being put under anywhere the loads of exterior canopies.

For larger interior canopies, where loads are increased (as more tension is required to pull the canopy into shape) the size of connectors will increase. This direct relationship of larger loads requiring larger rigging sizes obviously extends to exterior environments, and more so where higher safety factors come into play. Engineering information gained during the design process will dictate these fixing and rigging sizes accordingly.

MECHANISM

Page 8: Innovative Tensile Pvt Ltd

To keep your Tensile canopy in tip top shape, cleaning and maintenance is vital. Therefore, if you would like your tensile structure to remain in the same quality as at installation, thereby extending its lifetime, Innovative Tensile recommends regular checks of your structure, examining for any cleaning or maintenance issues in accordance with the operations and maintenance manual that we will issue you with at installation completion.

Maintenance and cleaning frequency depends on a number of different factors, such as the canopy form, its location relative to dirt/debris sources (like trees for exterior canopies and air conditioning ducts for interior canopies) and the amount of other airborne dirt. As a general guideline we recommend that the canopy should be cleaned and maintenance checks conducted annually. Again, this frequency will be suggested in the Operations and Maintenance manual (O & M manual).
