Light is an essential condition for survival, and has earned its value from a variety of purposes. The unique properties of Dow Corning’s silicone materials can have several uses in the lighting industry, especially for the needs of the LED (Light Emitting Diode) market. Dow Corning has created a variety of coatings, gels, encapsulates, adhesives, and conductive materials for LED applications.

Utilizing Dow Corning’s materials, Team Spark will attempt to develop sustainable illumination for home, office, and mobile applications. The potential savings from increasing the efficiency of lighting technologies is enormous since 20 to 50 percent of total energy consumed in homes and offices is for lighting. Team Spark will work to produce technologies that will meet the needs for ambient, accent, task and focus lighting for households. For the office space our team will focus on developing technologies that meet the needs of office workers of different industries. In regards to mobile applications our team will focus on increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of lighting in automotive interior lighting, cell phone flash modules and especially emerg-ing liquid-crystal display (LCD) backlights.

LED BASICSLight-emitting diodes (LEDs) are solid-state devices that convert electric energy directly into light of a single color. Because they employ “cold” light generation technology, in which most of the energy is delivered in the visible spectrum, LEDs don’t waste energy in the form of heat. LEDs are actually damaged by operating at high temperatures, so LED lamps typically include heat management elements such as heat sinks and cooling fins. This is a great advantage over the most common forms of lighting now, incandes-cent and fluorescent lighting, which both produce a great deal of heat. Incandescent lights convert about 10% of the inputted energy into light, and the other 90% is emitted as heat.

These light emitting diodes use direct current (DC) electrical power; to use standard AC power they require internal or external rectifier circuits. LED lamps offer long service life and high energy efficiency, but initial costs are higher than those of fluorescent and incandescent lamps. LEDs cost less to maintain because they are very resilient and last for 50,000+ operation hours. They are free of harmful elements like mercury/lead and consume less energy. They seem to be the obvious lighting alternative over

TECHNOLOGYUnder current technology LEDs are used in applications as diverse as replacements for aviation lighting, automotive lighting as well as in traffic signals. The advantages of these LEDs have allowed new text and video displays and sensors to be developed. The ability to rapidly turn on and off is also useful in advanced communications tech-nology. Infrared LEDs are also used in the remote control units of many commercial products including televisions, flashlights, DVD players, and other domestic appliances. Some other uses today are home and office lighting, bicycle lighting, billboard lighting, display lighting, emergency lighting, floodlights, railway signals, and stage lighting.

Under emerging technology high-power LEDs are an emerging market that would be ap-plied to outdoor lighting or where bright light is required. High-power LEDs require LED drivers, which is essentially its power supply. Large clusters of LEDs can get quite warm, especially when used outdoors. During day time, these systems must compete with sun-light, which is extremely bright. To overcome that brightness, the LEDs must be arrayed into very powerful clusters, and thus they require a new approach to thermal management and heat dissipation.

The fastest growing segment of LED lighting is architectural lighting. Applications include: warehouse lighting, streetlights, tollbooths, building exteriors, and all types of special lighting, often with multi-colored LEDs in the illumination strip. For interior lighting design, LEDs are used in what’s called “wall washing,” where the color of a wall changes. Some examples of “wall washing” are accent lighting; down-lighting, channel-type lighting, airport lighting, and roadway illumination. These many emerging applications are creating a new market for high-powered LEDs.

Page 19: Innovation Space Half-Time Proposal

13

LED manufacturers are continually refining their products and becoming more efficient, concentrating more power into a smaller area. Therefore, it is harder to keep the surrounding area’s temperature stable, resulting in ever-increasing thermal demands. From die cast heat sinks to more exotic systems like copper heat sinks with vanes and cooling fans. With the evolving applications, engineers are doing their best to keep up with the emerging challenges and uncharted ground.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and Polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) are also emerging LED technology. These LEDs are being explored and tested now and have little to no market penetration due to limited applications and cost. The overall desired color effect will determine which LED is best suited for a particular project. OLEDs make use of organic compounds to replace the LEDs’ inorganic semiconductors. PLEDs use the same design as OLEDs, but make use of a polymer film in place of the organic com-pound. OLEDs can be manufactured as thin, flexible films, and they are mainly used for items such as computer monitors and television screens due to their high contrast ratios. PLEDs are also manufactured as films rather than as individual light elements, and are best for low area lighting or presenting a full color spectrum for displays. The limited number of applications for OLEDs and PLEDs makes them less sought after than standard

HISTORY OF ENERGY

Per Capita energy consumption in recent years has been slowly increasing. However, energy consumption since about 1960 has remained relatively constant compared to the drastic increases that occurred prior to 1960. Even though growth since then has been relatively slow, energy con-sumption has still increased at a faster rate than energy production, which has caused problems like the notorious California rolling black outs. Sadly, even with all of the developments in renewable energy, the majority of the US’s energy is still generated from nonrenewable sources. In 2009, 83% of US energy was produced from petroleum, coal, or natural gas.

Hotel San Carlos was built in downtown Phoenix in 1928 and has been operating ever since. Over the years it has been a model of innovation, implementing the latest technologies and evolving with society as it improves. It was the first hotel in Arizona to use air conditioning and is now becoming pioneers in the lighting industry after switching from conventional incandescent lighting to using 100% LEDs. At first glance Hotel San Carlos looks like your ordinary international style historic high-rise hotel, but it is far from it.

Hotel San Carlos wanted to keep the historic look, while modernizing the entire lighting system to LEDs. This proved to be a real challenge since historic looking LED light fixtures are not necessarily at every neighborhood Home Depot, but the challenge was worth the trouble. The initial investment needed to outfit the hotel to LED lighting would be expensive, considering LEDs are more expensive than incandescent bulbs especially when you are ordering by the million. But powering millions of lights was precisely the reason for the switch. LEDs are much more energy efficient than incandes-cent bulbs and last much longer. Incandescent bulbs last 4-6 weeks while LEDs last 4-5 years which equates to 1000 operational hours for an incandescent bulb burn out to 50,000 operating hours for a LED to die. Operational life as well as saving thousands

29

of dollars a year on electricity made the switch a great decision. Many are turned off by the initial cost of switching to 100% LED lights but the truth is that on a large-scale building like the Hotel San Carlos, the initial investment is made back in 4-6 months. Thereafter large scale savings are made.

More and more other companies are making the switch because the benefits greatly outweigh any negatives. According to the hotel, the hardest part was making this modern switch while still looking like a 1920s hotel. Smart and innovative ways to stay on the cutting edge like this have kept Hotel San Carlos a popular and historic hotel for all these years, enough so that even Marilyn Monroe had her own favorite room on Hotel San Carlos’s third floor.

RC LURIEAccording to Phil Kenny, price is the biggest inhibitor for LEDs. Lighting options are determined by the application. LEDs are great for hard to reach places. A down side to CFLs is that they have additional costs if you want dimming. Phil also noted that, LEDs still convert 25% of power into heat, but that’s much less than CFLs 80% and incandes-cent 90%.

Current/new developments in the LED industry include: Solar powered traffic signals, new signage, Time Square Ball – LED retrofit, LEDs used for shower/faucets that change the water color based on the temperature. Some of these ideas such as the water faucet color LEDs are aesthetically pleasing, while also providing a new kind of safety mea-sure. LEDs are great for low maintenance areas and hard to reach places like bridges, tunnels, etc. Another great application is with motion sensors indoors or outdoors where lights would turn on/off frequently. LEDs are perfect for night lights because the 70% lumen rule generally doesn’t apply so LED life is still significantly longer. Also cold envi-ronments like in fridges/ freezers LED life is greatly extended due to cold temp making it an ideal application.

Pros for the use of LEDs include: they operate better/more efficiently in cold environments, they are 100% dimmable (with no color shift), and they have no consequences for frequent on/off. Cons for LEDs include: heat is detrimental to LED life, wet areas are not ideal unless great insulation is in place, not great for areas with a lot of chemicals in the air. LED life is directly proportional to the amount of heat present at the junction beneath the die chip. With proper cooling/ambient air temp LEDs can easily break 100,000+ hours of functionality.

Have you ever had difficulty seeing the items in the back or at the bottom of your pantry? ProdoLum is a product developed by Team Spark that can solve that problem. The product is composed of a silicone sheet that is cut to size and placed on each shelf. These silicone sheets are then lit by one or two tiny LEDs from the back and the silicone acts as a light dispersion material allowing light to shine up from beneath all the products on a shelf. This will enable you to see the items at the back of the shelves as well as the items on the bottom shelves where overhead lighting cannot reach.

ProdoLum will be offered in all major home improvement stores such as HomeDepot, Lowes, Ace Hardware, as well as online through Amazon and Ebay. The product will be sold at prices ranging from $50-100 which will cover a standard size shelving unit (5 shelves by 3 feet wide and 1 foot deep). Each unit will have a one year warranty on all parts and replacement silicone sheets as well as LEDs can be found at your local home improvement store. Buy ProdoLum today and experience “Lighting done right”.

FIREFLIES

Use reflective material to help reflect light throughout a space. This is seen in nature with the ability of a firefly to light itself up. The firefly does not produce heat in the process of lighting up similar to the use of LED lights as opposed to incandescent lights, which produce lots of unwanted heat. The firefly looks completely normal during the day where light is plentiful and at night has the ability to light up and its “skin” transmits light and allows it to shine light through and also reflect light. This characteristic seems very useful in our Prodolum idea of silicone lined kitchen pantry shelves to transmit light in a closed, dark area.

Page 58: Innovation Space Half-Time Proposal

52

BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING

As prodolum is our only product aimed at selling to the consumer market and not busi-ness to business, I chose this product out of the three to apply biodegradable packag-ing to. In nature, the coconut palm transports its seeds in a hard shell that contains all the nutrients the seed will need inside to survive its’ ‘journey’ to root. On the outside of this inner shell is a fibre float that protects the seed even further and makes it buoyant on the water. By applying this inner shell to packaging for a product like prodolum it would provide a durable and biodegradable barrier for transportation of the product. Thus the fragile pieces of prodolum, such as the glass and LED lights, would have less chance of breaking in the process from a factory to a truck to the store shelves with the bonus of being eco-friendly.

VENUS FLOWER BASKET

This product attempts to use silicone to channel LED light to appropriate locations inside a car. In nature the Venus flower basket has developed an optimal adaptation to transmit light. This sponge uses thin glassy fibers to transmit light more efficiently than man-made fiber optic cables. Not only are these fibers better at transmitting light, but they are also more flexible and made of natural materials. Utilizing this natural material Quorra could more efficiently channel the LED light using an all natural material that would not require any harmful manufacturing processes.

INSECT EXOSKELETON

Insect’s nanostructure exoskeleton, which allows them to carry and support extreme amounts of weights without structural failure. The material is made from beta-amyloid proteins with an outer protective layer creates the extreme structure. The structure is lightweight, transparent and easily manipulated. This characteristic would be very useful in our Umi product, which is a wave-like silicone light fixture ceiling where transparent and lightweight supports would be ideal to hold up the structure.

OXALIC ACID

This new lighting system utilizes wavelike silicone sheets to channel LED downward to the user. Instead of silicone material a crystal made of oxalic acid could also be used such as that seen in the window plant. These plants have pillar like leaves with a crystal on top that filters the light down into the pillars for more efficient photosynthesis. If this planet can use these crystals to distribute light within its pillar like leaves more effective-ly that surely these crystals would be also be a great alternative to silicone in regards to distributing LED light to where it is needed. It may even prove to be more effective than silicone because these crystals seem to act as an optic, which spreads the light out from the source rather than simply just channeling it to the end of the silicone sheet.
