hStick

Self-care, monitoring and promotion of one’s own health

Basic information needed in case of emergency (ICE)

Living will• comprehensive selection of health information and information on health behaviour: results of various measurements and fitness tests with reference values, exercise and nutrition diaries, etc.

• personal information• information on near

relatives • blood group• long-term illnesses• vaccinations• medication

• It functions as a safety device in case of acute illnesses or injuries.

A modernised version of the so-called SOS Passport, in which various health-related data may be saved:

Sticks – an R&D project where innovative concepts are built for the benefit of senior citizens.

A joint project by Palmenia Centre for Continuing Education, University of Helsinki and Lahti School of Innovation, Lappeenranta University of Technology, 2010-2013.

Two sticks are under development:hStick = a health stickmStick = a reminiscence stick (memory and recollection stick)

Impacts of sticks: some early remarks

hStick

(So far the existing data covers mainly the development of the structure and contents of sticks; data on the use of the sticks are forthcoming)

• The relevant information is carried on in the stick, when the owner has errands to run in different places, organisations and offices

• A true picture of efforts to promote health

• Testing of medication and learning of selfcare

• Increases interest about monitoring and promoting of one’s health

• When the structure is made, the data are quite easy to fill in

• Challenges are related to acceptability, updating, storage, data protection (however, these are less relevant when highlighting the role of the health stick as part of the health behaviour)

Potholes (challenges) identified concerning the hStick and mStick

Type of pothole

Examples

Technological pothole

- lack of technological facilities- problems of usability of the folders and subfolders - general functioning of the interface - data protection

Service pothole

- how to link the sticks to broader service systems- who produces contents for the stick- who is responsible for updating the stick- how to use the stick without a computer- how to start with an empty stick

Process pothole

- how to link the stick as part of the existing service chains and information systems

- the network around the stick pilots is rather broad (see Figure 1)

Organizational pothole

- the stick in the organizational practices

Marketing pothole

- accessibility- diffusion- fear for viruses- not for ‘special groups’ only - taking seriously the customer’s responsibility for his/her own health- one-dimensional perception of technology (technology as

passivization)Social pothole - fear for technology

- what if technology is replacing human contacts

Ethical pothole - who is allowed to have access to the information on the stick? - what if memories and reminiscence work are too painful? - who is responsible for the accuracy of the data on the stick?
