Make in India‘Indian Navy has been on the forefront in making warships and merchant vessels for over five decades in the country’, says Rear Admiral A. K. Verma, Chairman and Managing Director, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers.

‘The clarion call given way back in the year 1960 by the Indian Navy of making ships in the country has given a major boost in the field of shipbuilding and also creating jobs for the Indian youth. INS Vikramaditya, was the last warship made by the Indian Navy’, conveys Rear Admiral A. K. Verma at a panel discussion on ‘Make in India’ at the three-day maritime exhibition event organised by INMEX SMM India 2015.

Replying to a query, Captain S. Subedar says logistics cost is very high which adversely hits the shipping industry, comparing to the developed Nations.

Rohit Chidambaram, President, Chidambaram Shipcare, who are in the shipbuilding business for the last 26 years and has entered in a joint venture with a German country, was positive and says, ‘It is not difficult to do business in India and after the call given by the Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, ‘Make in India’, we are successfully moving ahead’.

However, Rohit Chidambaram negated to a query raised by Vijay, a designer from Cochin Shipyard, with regards to shipbuilding designing should be incorporated in the ‘Make in India’ category. Rohit Chidambaram says, ‘If your designs are globally best and competitive, no one could stop you from making headways’. Captain Ajay Achuthan, moderating the session, says in a lighter vein, ‘Whiskey needs to be branded, while milk is delivered at every doorstep. So try to be like milk, so your design would be in demand’.

‘Good Days Are Here…for the shipping industry, as the Union Government has an open door policy for the stakeholders’, says Deepak Shetty, IRS, Director General of Shipping, Government of India at the INMEX SMM India 2015 exhibition held at Mumbai.

‘With the change of policy, all eyes are set on India’, says Deepak Shetty; adding, ‘By 2030, India will be No. 2 globally in the shipping sector. If everything moves as per plan; no doubt, by 2050, India would emerge as the global No.1’.

Indian Navy Making Ship Since 1960

The ambitious project, ‘Sagar Mala’ will interconnect the coastal areas with road, rail and water, enabling the movement of goods from one place to another at a rapid pace, cutting down all the costs drastically. Sagar Mala project will give further boost to the economy by connecting all the coastal areas to mainland.

‘The much needed red-tapism has been removed in the shipping sector, enabling the stakeholders to get one-time license, thus they will not have to run to the DG office any more’, says the IRS officer; adding, ‘Even out of the 67 rules, 14 have been repealed, thus making the trade smoother and no need for them to come to the shipping offices’.

‘In the coming six months, we are fully going online as it will enable the stakeholders to carry their work sitting from their office, instead of running to our offices’, says Deepak Shetty.

Q. What new products can the maritime industry expect from Jastram in near future? We constantly reach out to our customers to get their feeling on what is most important to them. Thereafter, we prioritise and have our R&D department invest the time and research required. One such result is our Digital Control Amplifier (DCA). It relies on the state-of-the-art digital technology for fast and accurate steering controls, in a small and simple design.

Q. What has been your most challenging execution as regards marine steering? On many occasions, we have shipyards that do not have all the specifications required to put together a complete steering system. This is where our experience and expertise comes handy. We are able to offer solutions based on the little information that we are given. We also strongly believe that meeting shipyards schedule is very important.

Q. What according to you are special aspects of your manufacturing processes?Honestly, I have to say our people are the special aspects. Our production department is constantly seeking ways of improving manufacturing process by saving time to help keep costs low, and providing ideas on how we can better our product.

Q. How do you balance the critical aspects of comfort and safety when designing a steering mechanism? I would have to say this is a very tough balancing act, but for us safety does

Q. Which are the main categories of equipment you offer to the marine industry?

Aries has been specialising in providing propulsion machinery of renowned OEMs e.g. marine diesel engines, reverse reduction and step-up gearboxes, surface drives, propellers and shafting, thrusters etc.

Q. What do you consider as your key differentiator as regards sales and service? One reason why we have been successful in providing effective support and service is because we get involved since Day-1 with the shipyard and the owner. This avoids discrepancy between different stakeholders about what was agreed upon at different stages. Being part of sales as well as service, allows for seamless transition from equipment supply to commissioning and after-sales support.

Q. Do you plan to sign-up any new alliances?New business tie-ups and new opportunities to increase our product mix are always on the cards. However, not at the cost of affecting our existing business. The reason why we have been representing

our Principals for more than a decade is that we remain focused on our existing partnerships and do whatever it takes to carry out our commitments to our partners. We wish to work with limited companies and remain focused.

Q. What steps would you like to see the new Government take to promote shipbuilding and increase the maritime activity? We would like the Government to take immediate steps to revitalise public sector shipyards by providing them greater financial support (say by providing subsidies to these shipyards). Increased public transport and tourism through waterways will also promote shipbuilding.

Q. Currently, what are the biggest issues being faced by equipment suppliers like you?

The Indian marine industry is still recovering from a prolonged recession. The global meltdown of 2008, the Greek crisis, the crash in crude oil prices, the ban on mining etc. have all exacerbated the slowdown. Three of Indian’s biggest shipyards going through CDR do not help either. According to my understanding, smaller shipyards

are now quoting prices, just to win orders and keep their shipyards running. That affects companies, such as us, who are trying to promote technologically advanced equipments which normally demand a premium in the international markets.

Q. Going forward, where do you see opportunities in the marine equipments sector?

We see big opportunities in the Defence market. Faster, stealthier boats for coastal patrol is the order of the day. Gone are the days when we could patrol affectively with boats that do not go faster than 25 knots.

One area that really looks interesting is the inland waterways. Inland waterways has traditionally had problems of shallow draft, lack of infrastructure etc. We see a huge opportunity for hydraulic deck mounted propulsion there, which can effectively address most of the problems currently being experienced by vessel owners.

Significant Opportunities

At INMEX 2015, being South Asia’a largest exhibition of its kind, I am sure that several fructifying interactions and exchange of ideas between all stakeholders will happen. The confluence of niche maritime processional under a

single roof will provide the most appropriate platform for discussing the various challenges faced by the Indian maritime sector and also explore ways for path-breaking solutions.

Being the net maritime security provider in the region along with the Indian Coast Guard, it is in the Navy’s interest to support this

initiative whole-heartedly.

Q. How has ship building evolved in the last 5 years?Due to the economic / shipping slow down, shipbuilding has evolved to sustainable methods of construction and optimum designs for desired operations on coast. Also, each design is now being built to have multipurpose functions and jobs the vessel can cater to in logistics. For e.g., a landing craft is being designed and built by us to carry bulk cargo, passengers, bunker, containers, fire fighting (FI FI 2) for UAE coastal operations and it can render any of the services mentioned, in time of demand, in its area of operation.

Q. Availability of human capital for this industry. Your comments please.Skilled manpower is limited; unskilled

is unaware of shipbuilding / repairs and needs to be trained. Casual labour cannot be used as they do not have any awareness on personal safety and being unpredictable in

nature, is not a reliable team member.

Q. How do you see the business landscape in India?Promising. Money is there; just that shipping is not the industry that seems to be the best sector for investment, keeping ROI in consideration.

Q. Along your business journey which have

been the key milestones that you wish to share with the readers. After delivering over 80 new construction vessels and more than 40 repairs during the last 8 years,

triumph over comfort. We first look to see if the vessel is being built to any classification standards. If it is, then first priority would be to meet or exceed the standards. However, we do end up designing a system that is safe and reliable, which is comfort in itself.

Q. Jastram in India, the journey. Please comment.

I took over the Indian market back

in 2006, just as things were on the rise. The next 4 years saw order books overflowing. Near the end of 2010, things did taper down, but with our partners in India (Arcum Marine Services), business was good.

This year, there has been a good shake up in the Indian market. With our product, engineering and support, we continue our plan to keep introducing Jastram to the constantly new shipyards emerging in India.

Elcome Unveils New Plotting Table at INMEX SMM INDIA

Elcome Integrated Systems portfolio comprises of

electronic equipment covering navigation, communication, machinery control system, ship safety systems, satellite communication (VSAT), radars, sonars and homeland security systems and more. Ships at sea have a need to continuously know their position. While GPS provides the latitude and longitude of the ship, it does not provide plot on paper chart. The actual position on nautical chart needs to be plotted at periodic intervals. This achieves greater significance when the ship is operating in confined waters where the GPS system inaccuracy needs to be athwarted by local manual fixes. Automatic plotting table provides means to plot the position of a ship on paper chart.

Naksh Yajana-GEM is an electromechanical plotting table manufactured indigenously by Elcome Integrated System to display the ship track on navigation chart during a voyage.

acquiring another shipyard with dry dock facility, each day at Vijai Marine has been eventful, some challenging, some depressing, some encouraging while some rewarding.

Achievements have been many; however, the ones I really cannot forget and believe have been the key ones to sharpen the growth motivation are mentioned here:l Building a 2200 dwt cargo vessel under

IRS class in 68 days.l Dry docking barges for Goan operations

at a pace of 3 per month l Being repeatedly the most techno-

commercially competitive builder and acquiring GMB, MMB and KSINC projects back to back in the same year.

l Building 5 cargo vessels for JITF coal operations on east coast in 1 year.

l Competing with Iran and Indonesia for acquiring export orders.

l Building a landing craft for Maldives operations in 75 days.

l Being awarded as the enterprising shipyard in our sector / segment by NMDCC Goa.

l First RSV 2 cargo barge built in India.l First RSV 4 oil tanker being built in

India and will be delivered in the next 30 days.

Q. Your thoughts on the ‘Make in India Campaign’.

Very motivating vision, but the industry and the Government needs to understand and decide at which level of link do we want to exist globally in the manufacturing sector, irrespective of the type of industry. Only then, can we have a planned direction and will see way forward happening, before plunging in at all levels simultaneously.

R. R. Deshpande Joint Managing Director Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited

‘The imperative needs of shipbuilding industry in the coming years are going to remain the main drivers for technology of engineering equipment’, opines R. R. Deshpande, Joint Managing Director, Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (KOEL), an ancillary supplier. ‘The shipbuilding industry would need energy efficient ship designs and pollution free marine environment’, he adds.

The conventional propulsion systems involving propulsion engines, gear box, shafting and propeller would further evolve to improve the overall energy efficiency by using hybrid

KOEL Geared to Address the Changing Needs of

Shipbuildingsystems. A typical hybrid system uses the same conventional set-up, but optimised rating of propulsion engines with addition of power take off arrangement for shaft generator. The generator, in turn, supplies power to the ship grid and batteries. Batteries are used to supply power to the electric motor for driving the propeller for slow speed manoeuvring.

More stringent environmental regulations that require reduced emission levels of NOx and particulate matter are pushing the engine manufacturers towards the use of specialised fuel injection equipment such as electronic unit injection, common rail and specific allied technologies such as Miller valve timing and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

KOEL currently meet IMO Tier-2 certification for exhaust gas emission and is fully prepared for

further engineering challenges to meet technological requirements of new energy efficient ships. After successfully introducing mid-size generating sets (10 KVA to 625 KVA), KOEL is fully geared up to introduce the main propulsion applications of its existing air cooled ‘HA’ series and water cooled R, SL and DV series engines covering a power range of 19 BHP to 740 BHP for powering commercial and naval ships.

Defence has been one of the major customers for KOEL. KOEL understands all naval requirements and qualifications to meet customised

solutions needed by the Indian Navy including stringent requirements

such as shock, noise and vibration and submersibility. KOEL has already demonstrated its strength for supply of navalised marine main and emergency DG sets as well as engines for fire fighting pump and compressors. KOEL has executed projects such as naval OPV, LCU, cadet training ship, fuel / water barge, survey training vessel,

tugs, dredger and also coast guard ships such as FPVs and OPVs.

Today, KOEL is rightly placed in terms of the current initiatives undertaken by our Nation such as ‘Make in India’ and integration of rivers, where lot of scope exists to add value through different offering for fully indigenously manufactured products such as marine DG sets, propulsion engines and also supporting river navigation for transportation of men and material.
