BarhamBARHAM is an attrac-
tive village, with a long street over which towers the green copper spire
of the 13th century church of St John the Baptist.
Nearby Barham Court was once the home of that FitzUrse who was one of the knights who murdered Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170, and the three bears on the vil-lage sign that stands on the green are a reference to the FitzUrse family.
Incidentally, an unusual feature of that same village sign is the little mouse carved into the woodwork, the signature of the craftsman who made it and who
was known locally as Mousey.
For many years the most distinc-tive local landmark, after the church, was Barham windmill but that was destroyed by fire during restoration in 1970.
Broome Park at Barham is a 17th century mansion designed by Inigo Jones.
It is probably the original of Richard Barham’s Tappington Hall in his lngoldsby Legends.
During the 18th century it was the home of Henry Oxenden who, while still at Cambridge, invented an ice-yacht that had four skates, a tablecloth sail and a dragoon sword for a rudder. In
1911 Sir Charles Oxenden sold Broome Park to Lord Kitchener of Khartoum.
His alterations to the house were said to include a cupboard built into the panelling of his study in which he could hide whenever he spotted a lady approaching the house, in case she turned out to be another of those suf-fragettes who besieged him from time to time.

Healthy Lunch BoxesHomemade white bread recipe
Preparing a healthy lunch your children will enjoy each day is no easy task. It can be a real challenge
to come up with fresh ideas to stop lunchtime becoming dull, with the same old sweaty cheese sandwich, chocolate biscuit bar and bag of crisps! And trying to keep it healthy just makes it all the more difficult. So here are a few ways to mix things up and try to keep lunch time fun and interesting for your kids. Why not surprise them each day with something new in their lunch box!
Change the breadDon’t just stick to the same old sliced white supermarket loaf, try brown, granary or seeded. Or you could go for rolls, baguettes, paninis, bagels, pita breadm crackers or wraps.
Change the shapeEspecially for younger children, make sandwiches more fun by removing the crusts and cutting out different shapes using pastry cutters.
Change the fillingTry and think outside of the
traditional ham or cheese sand-wich. How about combinations like diced chicken and sweet-corn, ham and avocado, grated carrot and cheddar cheese, or jam and cream cheese!
Mix it upInstead of a bag of something, why not create your own mix? A selection of small flavoured crackers, cereals, dried fruit or mini-pretzels could be used. Or if you want to add a treat, why not throw in some bite sized chocolates, like a few Smarties or perhaps yoghurt or chocolate covered raisins. Experiment with different mixes and see what your kids like.
Don’t forget the veggiesTo ensure your child gets their recommended daily amount of vegetables cut up a selection of carrot sticks and celery sticks. Consider other vegtables like cucumber, baby corn or cherry tomatoes and maybe add a small container of dip.
Fruit cubes with cut up differ-ent pieces of fruit and place in a plastic container. Use plain or flavoured yogurt as a tasty dip.
Cheese cubes and grapes make a nice snack or lunch dessert. Pineapple and apple slices dipped in lemon juice also go nicely with cheese.

LIFESTYLE
The Family CarSo how much exercise do children need?
Is it time to get rid of the sporty two seater and finally get a grown up car? Getting your first family
car or upgrading your current one to cope with your growing family can be a big decision and it’s important to get it right first time. So, follow our advice to help work out what suits your family’s needs.
The best place to start is friends. Ask other parents what cars they drive and what they think of them. Are they reliable? How much do they cost to run? How often does the fuel tank need refilling. Determine what style of car you want - a hatchback, a saloon or a large estate, peo-ple carrier or off-roader / SUV. Make a short list of cars that fit into the body style you’ve cho-sen, those that have been recom-mended and those that you’ve seen on the road that you like the look of.
Next, and most important, set a budget - and then stick to it! The price range for new cars can be anywhere from £10,000 to £100,000 or more! Ok, for most realistic family cars it wont be quite that much, but you could still spend the best part of £40,000 on a high end estate or SUV. Sticking to your budget firmly will also help you to negotiate with salesmen if you’re adamant about the price you’re willing to pay.
Then have a think about what you’re going to use the car for and what features you need.
Are you just going to use the car for the school run, or will it be used for family holi-days? Would you want to get two weeks worth of luggage squeezed in the back or would you use a roofbox? Has the car got roof rails? If you’ve got an expensive, trendy buggy or pram, will it fit in the boot com-fortably and easily? Would you still have room for some shop-ping? How many child seats do you need? Will they all fit? If you’re looking at a 7-seat car, how easy is it to use the rear seats? How much room is left in the boot when the rear seats are in use? Have a good think about how you would use the car every day and what possible problems you could encounter and see how each car measures up.
As well as practical features, these days there are a wide
range of safety features to con-sider. Any good car should have airbags and anti lock braking (ABS) as standard and many now will also feature a stability / skid control device. Optional extras such as reverse or forward parking sensors can make it eas-ier to park the car, especially if you’re looking at buying a larger car and will be trying to park in town.
Armed with your list of requirements, you can easily find detailed information about each car on your shortlist by browsing the numerous motor-ing websites on the Internet. You’ll find a number of profes-sional motoring reviews as well as information from current owners online which should help you learn more about the real world experience of owning each car.

Floor CoveringsIts is important to determine what type of flooring will work best for your lifestyle
Selecting flooring for the home is a big decision and a huge investment. But choosing the right
flooring will raise the living quality and value of your home. It’s important to determine what type of flooring will work best for your lifestyle. If wooden flooring is the way you want to go then there’s a choice of laminate, engineered or hard-wood boards, each with their own benefits and varying costs. The choice can be overwhelm-ing, particularly as the quality of wooden flooring has improved over recent years and it can be difficult to identify differences between competing products. One thing to think about is the area where the floor will be fit-ted and the level of wear it will sustain. Is it in a busy thorough-fare, such as a hallway, or near any moisture or wet areas.
Laminate flooring is typically made of high density fibreboard, with a top layer that simulates the appearance of a wooden floor, or indeed tiled or other floor surfaces. Most are avail-able with a glueless interlocking installation system, where the boards are simply clicked into place. This has the benefit that the boards can, if needed, be lifted and re-installed. Laminate is typically the least expensive option and because of this, it’s quickly becoming very popular. It’s also easy to clean. However, laminates generally cannot be sanded down or otherwise refin-ished, meaning that if the floor is damaged or worn, it will need to
worn flooring. Most hardwood flooring is pre-finished which helps protect the boards from water damage, heavy foot traffic or heavy objects being dropped on it. Hardwood flooring is usu-ally more expensive, but because it’s more durable the investment could be worthwhile.
Your choice of flooring is really a matter of weighing up cost versus functionality versus style. Solid oak will cost more, but last a lot longer. Laminate is going to cost you less, but could need to be replaced entirely within 5 or 10 years, depending on how the room where it is installed is used. No matter what you choose though, a new floor will always make a significant differ-ence to the look of any room and wont have an adverse effect on the value of your home.
be replaced.Engineered flooring is con-structed from a wooden or fibre-board base, with a thin layer of real wood veneer glued to the top. Because it’s a real wood veneer, it means that unlike a laminate the floor will have the appearance and characteristics of real wood. Engineered boards are less likely to be affected by moisture or heat and is a great solution for someone looking for a good looking floor without the high-end price of solid hard-wood flooring.Solid hardwood is formed from solid natural wood throughout the entire board. It typically consists of tongue and groove boards which are glued together. Solid boards can be sanded and refinished, which negates the need to refit lightly damaged or

BOOKS
THE VOYAGE OF TURTLE REXISBN 978-0-547-42924-3
A small prehistoric sea turtle hatches in the sand, scurries across the beach avoiding mon-strous dinosaurs, reaches the ocean, and slips into a bed of protective seaweed. Growing into a two-ton Arachelon, she is adept at concealment from larger amphibious dinosaurs, which would eat her. In due season, she returns to the same beach to lay her own eggs, com-pleting the cycle. “Gone is that sea and the sea and the crea-tures it knew. Gone is the plesi-osaur’s calm-cracking smile …
APRIL& ESME TOOTH FAIRIES.ISBN 978-0-7636-4683-7“Not so long ago, a tooth fairy took a call on her cell phone. ‘April Underhill here.’ With one finger in her ear to block the traffic noise, she listened. ‘You’re his grandma? No, my sister, Esme, and I don’t do tooth visits yet.” In a small cottage at the base of a stump next to a freeway, seven-year-old April and her sister, Esme, convince mom and dad to allow the tooth pick-up. Fortified with parental advice and a bag for the tooth, they lift off into the windy night, past an owl, and land on the doorstep of Daniel’s house.
ARGUSISBN 978-0-7636-3790-3
When Sally’s egg hatches and looks very different from the other chicks, a class science pro-ject becomes a lesson in love, tol-erance, forgiveness, and friend-ship,. Green and scaly with wings and a tail, Argus grows rapidly, becoming a handful to manage. “As the days passed, the chicks grew bigger. Argus was the biggest of them all. He stopped trying to eat the other chicks. He started trying to eat the children instead.” Sally longs for a normal pet.
Children will now begin the for-mal business of learning to read. Most likely, no skill will be more important to a child’s future than reading.
However, the process of sound-ing out words can remove the enjoyment of a story. This is where listening to good books can take on a new dimension.
Stories with vivid, precise words inflowing sentences are important. They will provide a contrast to the repetitious words that are found in school texts. There is still a need for numer-
ous illustrations to keep a child’s attention and interest.
Good stories can take children outside of themselves and into another world. They now are ready for greater flights of fanta-sy. Now that they have a firmer grasp of real and make-believe, their adventures into this world should still be safe-scare experi-ence. Even with this firm fix on fantasy and reality, they still love humor.
It is satisfying when a young hero outsmarts the older, wiser, or stronger character It is impor-
tant to hear stories of good tri-umphing over evil. Folktales
Children now have a greater grasp of the real and make-believe. Stories that were once too frightening are no longer intimidating to them. These tales belong to “once upon a time” and are adventurous places to visit.
Stories should contain good triumphing over evil. If there is danger involved, it should demand great courage.
