Fiberglass window frames offer many important benefits for buildings when it comes to energy and environmental performance. In terms of impact on LEED®, the most signifi-cant benefit of fiberglass window frames is from potential energy savings (under EAp2 and EAc1). Additional benefits such as condensation resistance, dimensional stability, and material longevity, while not explicitly addressed by the LEED® rating system, provide projects with a reliable and durable framing material.

Windows often comprise 40% or more of the total envelope area on a commercial building project. The reduction of heat transfer from the building envelope (when compared to other common framing systems such as anodized alumi-num) means that fiberglass window frames cut energy con-sumption, reduce operating costs, and help create build-ings with smaller environmental footprints. In addition, fiberglass window frames enhance condensation resistance resulting in a lower potential for moisture related problems and an improved indoor environment. Furthermore, the superior dimensional stability and longevity of fiberglass coupled with its enhanced condensation resistance con-tributes to increased building durability. I FIBERGLASS REINFORCED POLYMER FRAMES ARE ENGINEERED TO HELP DESIGNERS AND SPECIFIERS CHOOSE THE RIGHT WINDOWS FOR THERMAL EFFICIENCY

Proper window selection should consider two character-istics, the frame material and a thermally efficient glazing system to render the lowest U value (thermal conductiv-ity). The framing material in fiberglass window systems of-fers window frames that promote condensation resistance, dimensional stability and durability. The use of fiberglass window systems also offers superior thermal resistance with proven energy savings.

Expansion and contraction of the window frame is critical to maintaining dimensional stability. Under temperature variation similar materials perform the best together. So if the molecular chemistry in the frame is similar to that of glazing in the unit the two materials complement each oth-er and function synergistically together, commonly referred to as “glass on glass”. This very low expansion contraction ratio allows for seal protection from failure as well as sus-tainable caulk integrity between jamb and the wall. Inline manufactures windows that offer this performance.

The fiberglass window frame is strong, plumb and true which allows for ease of installation. The continuous fiber-glass roving reinforcement in the matrix composite lends high strength and durability to the lineal sections. This means that tall casement frames will not distort in a wide range of temperatures (i.e. -50°F up to 350°F). In the Canadian climate, with a wide variation of exterior temperatures, fiberglass window frames are one way of fu-ture proofing your home, offering excellent leed potential.
