Introduction NTPC Limited (also known as National Thermal Power Corporation Limited ) is an Indian Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. The headquarters of the company is situated at New Delhi. Since then it has established itself as the dominant power major with presence in the entire value chain of the power generation business. From fossil fuels it has forayed into generating electricity via hydro and renewable energy sources. This foray will play a major role in lowering its carbon footprint by reducing green house gas emissions. To strengthen its core business, the corporation has diversified into the fields of consultancy, power trading, training of power professionals, rural electrification, ash utilization and coal mining as well. It was founded by Government of India in 1975, which held 75% of its equity shares on 31 March 2013 (after divestment of its stake in 2004, 2010 and 2013).

Introduction

It was founded by Government of India in 1975, which held 75% of its equity shares on 31 March 2013 (after divestment of its stake in 2004, 2010 and 2013).

NTPC became a Maharatna company in May 2010, one of the only four companies to be awarded this status. NTPC was ranked 431st in the ‘2015, Forbes Global 2000’ ranking of the World’s biggest companies.

NTPC is a sole distributor and supplier of electricity in Delhi region user domestic, industrial and commercial users as well.

Listing

NTPC got listed on BSE and NSE on 5 November 2004. Against the issue price of INR 62 per share, it closed the first day of listing with INR 75.55 per share. On the day of listing, it becomes the third largest company in India in terms of market capitalization. NTPC current MARKET CAP (RS CR) 117,126.82.

As on 30 June 2013, Government of India held around 75% equity shares in NTPC. Over 740,000 individual shareholders hold approx. 1.93% of its shares. Life Insurance Corporation of India is the largest non-promoter shareholder in the company with 7.66% shareholding.

NTPC is a sole distributor and supplier of electricity in Delhi region user domestic, industrial and commercial users as well.

NTPC Plants and their Capacity

The total installed capacity of the company is 43,803 MW (including JVs) with 17 coal-based and seven gas-based stations, located across the country. In addition under JVs (joint ventures), six stations are coal-based, and another station uses naphtha/LNG as fuel.

Operations

NTPC operates from 55 locations in India, one location in Sri Lanka and 2 locations in Bangladesh.Headquarters: In India, it has 8 headquarters (HQ)

Awards

NTPC has been bestowed the honour of being most respected company in Power Sector for the year 2011 by Business world.

NTPC has been honored as the top performing thermal Generator in the Power line Awards held in New Delhi.

NTPC limited has been given Jury Award for ‘Lasting Impact on Indian Economy’ at the PSU Awards- 2013 held in New Delhi on 24th July, 2013.

NTPC Kawas received the first prize in the Thermal Power Stations Sector category in the National Energy Conservation Award -2012 on 14th December, 2012.

NTPC has been given the top honor for climate change initiatives by its Centre for Power Efficiency & Environmental Protection (CenPEEP) at the Times of India Earth Care Award 2012 in New Delhi.

NTPC Dadri has received GREENTECH GOLD AWARDS in training excellence.

NTPC has been awarded ‘Greentech CSR Award 2012’ in Gold Category in Power Sector by Greentech Foundation recently.

NTPC was ranked 62nd among the 250 largest Power Producers and Energy Traders in the world by Plats in 2012.

In 2009, it received ICSI National Award for Excellence in Corporate Governance.

SWOT

STRENGTHS

Largest market share in domestic power generation and a broad customer portfolio across the country.

Maharatana Status. NTPC has formulated a long term Corporate Plan up to 2017.

Weakness

Long and multi layered procurement process leading to long lead times and process delay.

Gaps in HR systems such as performance management, rewards and incentives and career development.

Opportunities

Expand generation capacities by putting up thermal and hydro capacities. Execute increased number of power plants that classify for Mega Power

Projects status, thereby reducing the cost of the projects and power and power generated.

Threats

Stringent norms for approval of increase in capital costs for projects in event of time overrun.

Stringent environmental norms in the future may add to the cost of generation.

Organization structure

Organization structure includes three levels of management i.e. corporate level including management, then region level comprising management of SBU regional level management & last as planning level Management as GMs of various plants.

Description of On-Job Training

In Job training my project is “Procurement, Work Policy and Award of Contract”

and my work under the Finance Procurement and award of contract Department.

The role of finance procurement management and award of contract, since it is one

of the major departments at NTPC. As for every purchase at NTPC proper

procurement management procedures are being followed which will help to

analyze the working and even results in efficient working of the process. It

basically deals with how a bidder who quotes the best is awarded with work,

through which the company is able to cut down at its costs. And also, to study the

financial position of the bidders and the management of funds & contracts at

NTPC Ltd. The depth study of how various types of contracts are floated, procured

and changes are implemented.
