Finding the Spokane Raceway Park is

much like finding Pacific Raceways…

the first time may be a challenge. Af-

ter driving there the long way via North

Cascades, Omak, and then Sherman

Pass, I arrived at the track near mid-

night, with just enough enthusiasm to

setup my tent next to driver‟s services

and climb inside. The morning was a

little chilly but it warmed enough to

make it a perfect weekend weather for

races. This was the first time SOVREN

held a vintage race weekend at this

newly paved and reconfigured race

track. The course is about 2.5 miles

around with minimal elevation changes

and drives rather fast with a big

sweeper corner or two and few very

slow corners. The only shortfall is a

minimum of viewing areas for specta-

tors… per-

haps that

will improve.

In the pad-

dock, I

found Tracy

and Dave Kingstone with their GTV, as well as Mike Alfstad with his GTV, also Arash

Nadershahi and his blue and orange Duetto. There was also a very nice Giulietta

Sprint Veloce that sounded great and ran fast all weekend. Dave had a great time

while on track but an oil pressure problem shortened his weekend.

Amongst the crowd were other club members and Alfa Romeo fans… from mechanics

working on cars to officials running the event. On Saturday evening the event had a

nice banquet with, George Follmer, who‟s racing career started in the 60s and com-

peted in USAC, raced at Indianapolis, Formula One, and most important to us Alfisti, he

raced in both the Trans-Am and Can-Am series. Thanks to vintage events like this we

racing days. In fact, some of

the best racing of the week-

end was the Big Bore cars like

„70 Mustang Boss 302 against

a „67 Corvette, „68 Camaro,

and a Jaguar XKE.

Before I left town, I had the

joy of visiting with many of

the NWARC members in the

Spokane area. They are a

great bunch we don‟t often

get to see. We toured ga-

rages or talked about their

cars, lives, and Alfa passion.

I hope to have a few dry sid-

ers join us on future events.

presentation.

Notice how as the summer season has slowly, well very slowly, crept up upon

us that there are getting to be a few more car shows and track days? Our

colleagues in SOVREN kicked off the month with a 3-day weekend race at

Spokane‟s Raceway Park. Our illustrious Iniezione editor made the trek to

the other side of the state and worked corners for the event. NWARC just

had its first of two evening lapping days. I hope a few of you made those

events. My GTV6 should be ready for the next one.

I managed to attend the All Convertibles Cruise In at the Triple X Root Beer Drive In. What I en-

joyed about the convertibles show was the variety of cars. Starting old there was a 1921 Dodge

Brothers touring car, notable for its slide up steering wheel (fixed steering column) easing the driv-

ers exit from the car. Going forward a few years was a 1927 Cadillac seven passenger tourist phae-

ton. Moving forward in time on display was a 47 Mercury, 49 Plymouth, and a 57 Ford Skyline hard

top convertible that retracted into the trunk. The best of Detroit excess? How about a 1959 Chrys-

ler Imperial, two doors and fins forever! Anyone ever see a Ford Mustang convertible? Of course,

but wait! What caught my eye was the original straight six intake manifold. It looked like a log

alongside the cylinder head but was cast as part of the head ! Italian representation was a little

weak in that just one Fiat 124 Spider made the display and I saw a Ferrari 430 convertible parked

along the end side of the restaurant. A few Alfisti‟s showed including Harry Reed earlier, Alan

Chockie, and I had a talk with new member Gene Davis, as well as George from the Fiat club. All in

all a great show.

I don‟t generally enter my Alfas into shows too often as they‟re not in show condition, but one that I

do is my home town‟s little show during its one day festival. Cars usually consist of common Detroit

iron from the 60‟s with the interesting cars often being old Detroit orphans such as Nashs and

Studebakers. I figured the show can use more variety so have been bringing my GTV6 and this

time my Milano Verde. The entry fee is usually a non issue for me as I always win the long distance

prize requiring a 300 mile drive to get there.

Enough on car shows? Not yet, I just attended the Greenwood Car Show in Seattle for the first

time. What a show! It covered both sides of Greenwood Ave from NW 68th St to 90th. I managed

to cover only one ¼ of it in six hours! What did they have? How about a 1974 Datsun 1200 right

hand drive Ute! Not sure how it got here. A good selection of Nash Metropolitans and early Minis.

The old guard was represented by a 1919 Cadillac Limo, cool!

The SOVREN Historics are next. I‟ve entered my, well I hope to have my GTV6 there as I think I‟ve

got the coolant leak figured out. Could have worked on it today but went to the Greenwood show

instead. It will be my Verde if not. Looks like Bill Gehring will be there all three days. I‟ll see Enri-

que Garcia and John Inge as well. Mike Yates and Rob Tuton will enter cars. Looks like Jeff Bedell

will be there on Sunday. He has the best Alfetta GT I‟ve ever seen, complete with Euro front grill

and stainless steel rear bumper. I expect the Historics will be crawling with Alfisti that weekend so

if you want to meet and greet a lot of club members, this will be one of the best events to do so.

News For Alfisti…

Our local SOVREN folks are busy over the July 4th weekend at Pacific Raceways in Kent hosting their largest vintage event of the year. There

are always a few great Alfa Romeos on the track and in the Car Corral. This year is no exception with a number of nice Alfas registered to show.

Read page 11 then head to Kent.

Alfa Romeo’s product plan until 2014 has been leaked on the internet and has revealed that the Italian automaker plans on launching seven new

or redesigned models in the next three years, most of which will be available in the U.S. market. What‟s different at this time is that there are ac-

tions behind the words and everything seems to be fairly well planned out, not to mention imminent.

The new models will begin to arrive in 2012, starting with the production version of the mid-engined 4C concept, perhaps the first car brought into

the US. 2012 also marks when Alfa‟s long-rumored compact SUV will finally see the light of day. The last bit of news for next year is that the

three-door MiTo hatchback will get a facelift.

In 2013 Alfa will launch the car that will replace the 159. There is a very good chance it will be called the Giulia and it will be launched as both a

sedan and a wagon. Both versions of it are being developed with the U.S. market in mind. The MiTo family is scheduled to grow that year, adding

a five-door hatchback and a convertible version to the existing three-door model.

The popular Giulietta will get a facelift in 2014 and it will be accompanied by a new SUV that will be larger than the one that Alfa will release next

year. Basing it on a Chrysler platform is not out of the question. Fiat plans on utilizing Chrysler‟s existing dealer network to distribute Alfas there.

So far no precise date for any of this has been mentioned but new and U.S.-bound Alfas are right around the corner and unlike the numerous other

rumors that have circulated about this for the past couple of years, this time it looks set in stone.

The latest Pixar movie; Cars 2 is out and much to my amazement, they travel to Italy for a race. Since all the characters in the movie are actu-

ally cars, there are plenty of cartoon Italian cars both in the story and in the background. The only Alfa Romeos I spotted were Duetto Spiders,

but they are in green, cream, red, and more.

Speaking of movies, there is a new movie that was first shown at the Seattle Int‟l Film Festival called Angel of Evil. The story is about a tough

gangster in Italy during the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. The director must love Alfas so there are an amazing number of Alfas used by the stars, as

well as simply in the background. It does have sub-titles in English.

Another Lapping Evening Pacific Raceways July 27th

Our June Lapping evening at Pacific Raceways went very well, now we have a second chance for

the same fun. It will be held on July 27th at the same location in Kent. Gates open around

4:00 PM with a mandatory drivers meeting by 4:30 PM. We enjoy the track until dusk… as long

as it is safe to drive. This event can fill up so sign up now to ensure space. Cost is: $180 and

This event needs turnworkers and others to keep it rolling. Volunteer (Same website as regis-

tration) and enjoy the evening while getting a view of the great cars on the track. It‟s fun, and

a great help to NWARC.

Half Fast Lap of Washington Sept 24—26

This year, NWARC is in for a treat on the Half Fast Lap

of Washington. Our tour will start by heading to

Yakima, then a bunch of back roads and end in Walla

Walla on Saturday… which will end with an evening at

a local brewery. Since this is also Crush week so we

will stop at a winery or two along the way.

Sunday we‟ll enjoy the great roads, towns and history

that is the Palouse area. This will include stops to see

the marvelous Palouse Falls, touring a Dam on the

Snake River as well as a drive to the top of Steptoe

Butte. We then wander many miles across the

“Scablands” created by Glacial Lake Missoula, then end

the day at Soap Lake.

Monday has us heading up Grand Coulee to the Dry Falls area, then east to Moses Coulee.

Later in the day we will visit the Wild Horse Wind Farm, and enjoy the Old Vantage Hwy be-

fore returning to the wetter side of the mountains.

Our Eastern Washington members can meet us in

Yakima on Saturday morning! Don‟t miss out… and

Are you only getting the mailed B&W copy of the club news-

letter? Have you looked at the full color e-mail / web version?

The color version is really enjoyable, usually a few days ear-

lier than the printed version, and doesn't require trees to be

cut down. It costs the club almost nothing to produce and

share. You can print out a select page or the entirety. In ad-

dition to the full color images, more info and photos are often

included in the digital version.

Alfa Romeo in Books and Magazines!


Probably the most interesting and compelling Alfa Romeo related

book came out in 2009. Ferninando Valetti – Alfa Romeo,

Mauthausen and Return, was written by Manuela Valletti Ghezzi

about the author‟s father. It is an interesting story.

Ferninando Valetti , born in Verona, Italy in 1921, graduated engi-

neering school and went directly to work for Alfa Romeo in 1938. It-

aly suffered tremendous social stress during this period and it was

during this time some of Ferninando‟s coworkers encouraged him to

help lead a strike. When those coworkers were arrested by the fas-

cist run government in 1944, they fingered Valetti as the ring leader.

From there, he was first taken to St. Vittore Prison Camp, then

Mauthausen and Gusen prison camps. Some eighteen months later he was freed by the Allies. Upon his release

he was so emaciated he spent the next two years recovering in a nursing home. He eventually returned to Alfa

Romeo as the executive of logistics for the marque in 1961 until his retirement in 1978. For years he did not speak

of his internment and it was only near the end of his life did he share his story. The story is further expanded by

the inclusion of several black and white photos, timeline, and bibliography.

The book is not a long read – there are only fifty pages; but it is a compelling read. Very few Alfa related books

tell the human side of the marque – the people who made Alfa Romeo and its cars the reputation we still value to this day. Griffith Borgesson

did it with his excellent work “The Alfa Romeo Tradition” back in 1993 and similar works “La Mia Alfa” by Gian Paolo Garcea ; “Alfa Romeo – Dei

Nostri Sogni” by Davide De Bertolis; and the writings of Pat Braden. Highly recommended and available from Books4Cars

( www.Books4cars.com ).

Speaking of books, this graphic novel was talked about on the AlfaBB. It is called Red Bella about a

serial killer in Naples Italy who kills who she feels are bad guys. An Alfa Romeo 164 is featured and

driven a lot in the storyline. There are plenty of fun graphics with the car as well. Here is the long

Early June… Autoweek published a very nice article about enjoying the family Alfa Romeo. The arti-

cle is written by a young man in Michigan named Bart Constant… nephew of our own club member,

Barry Constant. Barry is not referenced by name in the article, but Bart includes him in the family‟s

passion and efforts. The history of the family Alfa included Barry driving the car in High School when

most everyone else drove Muscle Cars. If you attended the 2007 AROC Convention in Detroit, you

may have seen this same car… Barry brought it to the show.

Automobile magazine‟s July issue has a design critique of the Alfa 4C written by Robert Cumberford.

He clearly likes the car with his biggest complaint being the tiny hatch at the back that is supposed to

be a trunk.

Hemming’s Sports & Exotics has an interesting article about an Alfa 8C2300 that had a rough life

racing, weird motors, then a full restore… or perhaps more of a re-creation.

Kirkland Concours Tour d’Jour Sept 9th

The Kirkland Concours inaugural “Tour d‟ Jour” offers an opportunity to join like minded enthusiast for a very special day. This tour begins at

the LeMay Museum headquarters in Fife for private viewing of cars, the planned route takes in 90 miles of country roads and spectacular scen-

ery. A mid tour rest stop in Eatonville has been arranged at the Truly Scrumptious Bakery, before the final leg of the tour returns participants to

Griot‟s Garage World Headquarters for a hosted barbecue lunch and a chance to look around the amazing facility and cars.

In the interest of safety, participation in the tour will be limited to 50 cars from selected clubs. This year NWARC (Alfa Romeo) is one of the se-

lected clubs. The cost is $70 per car for two people, which includes a small donation to the beneficiaries of the Kirkland Concours d‟ Elegance. If

you want to participate in the inaugural Kirkland Concours Tour d‟Jour, send an email with names, club, make, model, year, color of car you will

The first car on track didn‟t happen until close to 5:10 PM, but that didn‟t dampen the spirits of the 47 drivers registered for our June Lapping Evening event. The weather didn‟t dampen it either, in fact, it was overcast to start but the sun came out half way through our evening. Fred Wright worked as trackmaster, Gordy Hyde as

Starter, and with a large number of Instructors and turnworkers, the event was off to a great start.

We had around a dozen Alfa Romeos at the track with about a half dozen running laps. A great looking and

sounding 1985 GTV6 driven by Michael Harris got faster as the evening went along. John Gates got a couple laps in driving his well dialed in Giulietta Spider. Tom Nuxoll brought out his Black GTV while Terry Larsen drove his 1966 Giulia Sprint GT with the sunroof. Terry‟s car may soon see a Twin Spark 2 liter motor. We also got to see Joe English driving his GTV around until his transmission decided to stay in second gear. That shortened his evening and he enjoyed a trip home on a truck. One funny difference was no Milanos were running. They have

been out in force over the last couple seasons. I know we have a few good and fast examples in our midst nor-mally.

The day went rather smooth with a little excitement for turn stations that can sometimes be sleepy. Turn 2 had a few cars off the track, with only feelings and gravel being knocked around. With enough turnworkers we staffed the Turn 4 station and they even had a couple cars challenged to stay on track… one with simply a fuel starvation issue… the gas tank was „bout empty.

The exit to Turn 8 became trouble for one black Mazda Miata, though rather fast on the pavement, he spun a couple times. No metal was bent thanks for the quick work of other drivers, and the waving yellow flag at Turn 7.

There was one short delay at one point when, over the radios, we heard that a deer was running around near Turn 7. A few of us from Turns 6, and 9 went to help herd the errant wildlife back off the racetrack before a car,

driver, or the deer were hurt. In the end Rob George was able to usher the deer back to the wilds and cars were back on track.

The evening ended as late as we‟ve ever gone, around 9:40 PM, with cars finally getting the checkered flag for the last time while their headlights lit the track.

The volunteers did a great job of tech, registration, turnworking, track setup and picking up the cones and sup-plies. The provided dinners were good, and cars were fast. What a nice way to spend an evening!

For Sale: 1972 Alfa GT Veloce 2000 Looks and runs fabulous - original plum color Resto-

ration by Group 2 Motorsports, Seattle, new headliner, seats (flying buttress) and carpet Engine

built by Conrad Stevenson, with 20k miles, Redline Weber Individual Throttle Body intake mani-

fold, with a GOTECH Electronic Fuel Injection system (smooth and reliable). The suspension was

completely refurbished with new bushings, ball joints and tie rods throughout. Sport springs and

Bilstien shocks were installed as well. Cromodora five spoke wheels fitted. Complete disassem-

bly to a bare shell, sandblasted and rust removal, including fitting of new floor panels. New

weather stripping and windshield gaskets were installed. Brightwork cleaned, and Cibie Euro-

pean headlights fitted. The battery is a sealed gel type unit of aircraft sizing, and is fitted to the

trunk with it's lightweight mount bracket. New gas tank fitted.

I have put about 1500 fun miles on it in two years of ownership, with lots of double takes and

suspension - with poly bushings, Rugh sport springs, Bilstein shocks, adjustable upper front

arm.

Complete engine rebuild with Hannifer Stage 1 head work with new race springs and 11mm

cams, 10:1 pistons, Ingram HP Spica pump to match, Crane Cam ignition, High voltage coil.

Transmission rebuilt by Ingram, Diff upgraded to 4.10 for nice cruising. Interior in decent

shape with recent seat covers. New top. Gas tank cleaned and sealed by Seattle radiator.

Radio upgraded to Alpine 4 x 65 W with 4 coax speakers discreetly mounted. This runs and

drives better than new and is ready for a late summer cruise as it sits. Eventually the new

owner may want to address the body and paint as it is patina rich but still looks good from

20 feet.
