Clubs in other communi-ties would do well to follow Williston's ex-ample; pick out the week-day afternoon ofleast course traffic and open the gates tothe local teen-age golfers.

"Every newspaper advertisement ongolf clubs that a store runs during Julyand August-and there are plenty ofthese ads-should snap the pro out of thedopey old notion that there's no use try-ing to sell clubs after mid-season. Themere fact that so many members haveenough desire for clubs to buy them afterJune, without selling effort on the part ofthe pro, is an indication of what busi-ness might be done if the pro would goafter the business."

What Glynn thinks about the club sell-ing possibilities during the latter part ofthe season is strongly endorsed by theremarks of other pros who stand at thtop of their profes 'ion as businessmen.

The pro has a tough enough job tryingto make a living in a six or seven monthseason, but if he lets this comparatively

The Galion club, like many of the golfclubs in towns of Galion's size, began itslively revival in 1937, under the presi-dency of A. E. Evans. A membershipcampaign was conducted during the win-ter with the old standby member as thesolicitors. Th campaign wa not asweep-up proposition but took th policyof asking only Galion's mo t active citi-zens to join. A strong point was madeof the fact that an invitation to join theclub was a mark of distinction not to belightly regarded. Aft e I' th leadingbusiness and social citizen signed up,the others who could afford th club andwho had other proper qualifications be-came eager to join.

New Jersey Golf League Most PopularWith B-Class Golfers

E'VE heard a lot about how playerget hot and turn in low round when

they're not in competition and the pre -sure i n't on, but here is a case wherehigh handicap golfer have been scoringmuch better in competitive play than whenlittle or nothing depend upon the outcomof the round. All this is taking place inthe Orange Mountain Golf League in the

ewark, . J. di trict where both andB divi ion take part in te m competition.

The A league has been a success fromthe start, doing much to promote good fel-lowship and golf interest in the commu-nity, but it wasn't until this year that theB league really came into its own-andnow it's the place where most of the funis to be had. Open only to players withhandicaps of not less than 12, the teamidea has gone over big this year with thehigh handicap players at the six clubs inthe district taking part in the league; andobservers point out that the brand of golfbeing played this season by those in the'bush' league is uniformly better thantheir games in any previous year.

Ben Leonard, who directs the Montclairsquad, winner of last year's class Brace,says the following of the league: "Our Bmatches are the real thing. Men whonever played in competition before get abig kick out of it. It increases their in-terest and improves their play. We haveone man who never had be n below 90and playing in the team matches he shotan 81 at Essex County.

"At first we had troubl getting eightplayer for the team, but it is different to-day. We always have a complete teamready and on occasion we have had awaiting Ii t."

E sex ounty, Essex Fells, Rock Spring,Glen Ridge, Montclair and Upper Mont-clair make up the league and each hastwo eight-men teams in the competition.When the A team play at home the Bteam play away, and vice versa. Play irun off in foursomes, with two singlesmatches and a fourball match.

PERATING problems of the National and Western Opens have beengiven such thorough study by the golf associations and the officials of

the tournament clubs during the past several years one need not wonder thatthe National Open at Cherry Hillsand the Western Open at Westwoodwere run in practically perfect shape.Especially impressive was the man-ner in which the clubhouse traffic washandled at Cherry Hills.

Lacking the clubhouse area of mostclubs at which major tournaments arerun, it was thought by an outsider ob-server, prior to the tournament, thatCherry Hills would be swamped and theservice problem would have the manager,officials and guests on the verge of war-fare. In actual operation, Cherry Hillsserved with speed and neatness thathasn't been beaten by any of the clubs.Part of the answer was in the coopera-tion of other Denver district club man-agers with Manager Lawrence Marrin ofCherry Hills in loaning him expert wait-er. Another factor that solved the prob-lem was the service of meals al fresco ona veranda adjoining the dining room. Anoutside bar, serviced from the clubhouse,also was set-up and took part of therush load off the inside of the house.

The use of emergency outdoor spots forserving the buffet luncheons was highlysuccessful at Merion Cricket club duringthe 1934 Open, and at Oakland Hills in1937, but at Cherry Hills this was handledwith ideal speed. Golf tournaments oweconsiderably more than is realized to thefine spirit of helpfulness that managersof tournament clubs display in advisingthe manager who e club is unaccustomed

Green ection'Value hows

The U.S.G.A. Green ection's valuableinfluence was evident in the condition ofthe courses at Cherry Hills and West-wood. At both places the Green Sectionturf culture recommendation have beencarefully heeded. John Meade is chair-man and Henry Hughes, greenkeeper at

herry Hills. At We twood, the positionsare occupied, respectively, by L 0 Baumanand Albert Linkoger. Greens at bothclubs were virtually as perfect as puttingsurfaces could be. Fairway lies atCherry Hills were firmer than at West-wood, for th simple and adequate rea onthat turf culture in the St. Louis di trictr quir s longer fairway grass. Newspapers reported in great detailthe complaints some pros made about thenarrowness of fairways at Cherry Hillsand the luxuriant, closely-knit roughimmediately adjoining the fairways atthat club. Regardless of the valid prosand cons of the argument, the public's re-action to the complaint was that if thestars didn't like the rough, why didn'tthey keep out of it, as they were supposedto be able to do? Veteran tournamentplayers commented that the rough wasn'tany tougher than it used to be prior to1920. The oldsters ribbed the youngerplayers who complained, by saying thatthe low scores of the modern generationwere made on courses where there wasno rough that really could qualify asrough under the earlier definition.Rough Pre entProblem

Some players pointed out that therough bordering the fairway was muchtougher than that farther away, for thereason that the cut-in fairways had beenwell fertilized and watered. Consequently,so these fellows said, a very wild shotfrequently ended in a better lie than dida shot that just rolled into the fairwayborder. Ralph Guldahl, a smart playeras well as a mechanically great one, tookcare of this by using a spoon off mosttee so he wouldn't get a roll that mighttake a curved ball into the fairway fringe.Guldahl also showed keen headwork inshooting for the green rather than theflag, because the greens, in many in-stance", were bordered by long grass. The reduction in maintenance co ts r -sulting from use of this long gra as ~greens hazard is anoth r rea on why itwill keep growing. The ordinary m m-bel' is in there often, but he is reconciledto trouble.

Capt. Charles Clark, veteran pre-mqr, of theWillowick fee course at Cleveland, gives sometestimony on the value of fee courses as nur-series for private club membership. In the 10years Cap has managed Willowick, 131 of itsregular players have become private clubm mbers in Cleveland.
