However, he also wants to start a Dansville Histori- cal Society. Gailey, though, is busy being an Olivet College student and not yet having the money to just start up a society. “So, my hope is to begin to collect items, such as scan- ning items like the yearbooks and pictures, and be able to start possibly an online so- ciety and then once I have my own place and a job, finding a building or building my own to house all of the items,” Gailey said. Accord- ing to Gailey, he’s looking for any thing Dansville-relat- ed for the museum — every- thing from pictures, school, farming, family histories or other items. “My feeling is that every- one should be remembered, from those who made the papers to those who broke their backs to keep food on the table for their family,” Gailey said. “So many places focus on the headline names or the big events, and in many cases it is the little guys who are the true backbone of the community.” Then there’s the yearbook project. “One of the projects that I am currently doing is a yearbook project ,which en- tails finding yearbooks from 1925-1948 to help complete Dansville High School’s year- book collection,” Gailey said. Gailey said he’s not looking to buy or obtain someone’s yearbook, but to simply make a scan of the yearbook and other Dansville school-relat- ed material. After he repro- duces the yearbooks and the techniques are perfected, he eventually wants to sell them to anyone interested. The price of the year- books from 1925-1948, he said, will range from $20-$30. Gailey said he’s looking into a company that can scan hard- cover books and hopes to have those from 1949-1999 completed on an on-demand basis. Gailey said the finished products would be returned in three to four months. The cost of the yearbooks from 1949-1999 will range from $35-$45. Gailey also said he’s looking for yearbooks from 1925-1945. He already has volumes from 1946-1948, but they are a part of the soft- cover books that will cheap- er to make, so they will be priced in the same range as the older volumes. “The cost is greater than this for me, but the hope is that more than one person will want that same year, and after about three yearbooks of the same year, the money will become profit to use to- ward reproducing more year- books,” Gailey said. Gailey said he’s also inter- ested in any other Dansville- related memorabilia, such as pictures and family his- tories. For details, contact Gailey at (517) 589-8473 or [email protected]. Mason Auto Body Repair is proof of that. Bruce Wigginton, president of the body shop located at 805 Kerns Road, is thinking long-term in that regard. “We all have children,” Wigginton said. “We’re going to have grandchildren.” So it stands to reason that people want a clean envi- ronment for the next generations. But they still have a business to run now. To be environmentally conscious, Wigginton has taken steps to comply with federal stan- dards even before they were required. And it’s saving money. “It’s just a win-win situation for us,”Wigginton said. “We didn’t have to change.” But change they did, which resulted in the Michigan De- partment of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) and the Automotive Service Association of Michigan hon- oring the company for its efforts at a recent awards pre- sentation. Small business, big results Wigginton said Mason Auto Body Repair has been in town since 1976, and has been in the current building since 1986. Four years ago, Wigginton said, the company switched to high-efficiency T 5 fluorescent lights. The company now sees a lower electrical bills to the tune of an annual savings of $4,000. That’s a lesson for businesses looking to cut costs. “So they’re using substantially less electricity, but we’re getting better lighting,” Wigginton said. Automotive Service Association of Michigan President Ray Fisher called Wigginton a “forefunner” who takes a common-sense business approach combined with en- vironmental awareness, mentioning the lightbulb switch as an example. “He didn’t look at things through a fun- nel,” Fisher said. “He looked at things through a broad picture.” Wigginton acknowledged that many businesses don’t see the “big picture.” He said the payback is short- term even with the up-front expenses. For example, it cost $16,000 to switch to high-efficien- cy lights in his shop, but he got the return on his invest- ment in only four years, Wigginton said. Mason Auto Body Parts also recycles paper, radiators, scrap metal and cardboard, and reuses paint thinner as a cleanser, he said. Again, that makes good business sense, according to Wigginton, because not only is waste kept from being put into the environment, the shop reduces cost by not pay- ing disposal costs. Recently, the shop has started using water-borne paints, which Wigginton noted are very low in VOCs, or volatile organic compounds. Wigginton said that by making the switch to water-borne paints, the shop is reducing carbon emissions into the air. “It makes a big difference,” said Wigginton, who point- ed out that National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) will regulate the lowering of VOCs. “Obviously, they’re very harmful to the environ- ment,” Wigginton said. Wigginton said his shop will continue to be proactive by upgrading painting booths so air is cleaned before it’s emitted. There also will be probably be an upgrade of the heating and air-conditioning systems. Jeffrey Kreisler, general manager at Mason Auto Body Repair, said the painters on site have to be pass a test to show they can spray a vehicle properly. “Basically, what it boils down to is you can’t be waste- ful,” Kreisler said. Kreisler said he agrees “100 percent” with the philosophy of running the shop in a way that’s good for the environment. Even though there’s more work up front, Kreisler said it has a long-term benefit: “The piece of mind knowing you’re not emitting these things into the environment.” Proactive for environment By CHRISTIE BLECK [email protected] Painter Scott Gorrell works among environmentally friendly water-borne paints at Mason Auto Body Repair. Letters to the editor

Oesterle appreciativeThank you to each individual that supported Candie

Oesterle in her quest for the Vevay Township clerk’s posi-tion.

Your kindness, generosity and kind works about mymother were greatly appreciated. In my eyes, my motherlost nothing. Rather she gained the knowledge that the life-long friendships she has established in the community en-dure. She gained the respect of many who watched herfight a good, clean campaign.

And her grace and courage, despite difficult circum-stances, have inspired many, including me. I have neverbeen more proud of her or more proud to be a memberof the Oesterle family than now. And a special thank youto those employees of the township office who made thepast few months extremely difficult and made it clear fu-ture employment was not an option. Thank you for show-ing the entire township what a winner my mother really is.

Angela J. OesterleMason

Grateful to Big BoyThis is a thank you for the free breakfast that the Big

Boy restaurant of Mason provided for veterans on VeteransDay. What a great thing to do. It was really appreciated.

Community comes throughOn Nov. 20 a wonderful event happened. Approximate-

ly 60 community-minded individuals helped move a ton ofleaves in Rayner Park.

The event kicked off at 9 a.m. as close friends and fam-ily showed up and immediately pitched in. Minimal to noinstruction was required.

A couple of men used a trailer and moved sticks (somethe size of logs). The city provided two 9-hp and two 8-hpleaf blowers and four rakes.

Volunteers spent an average of two hours nonstop, theyoungest being was a toddler. I am 60 and I don’t think I

was the oldest. The 4-H and Honor Society also were rep-resented.

Everyone there has a good story. A cross-section of thetype of person involved includes: Rick, who has playedSanta for thousands of kids; Jim, who maintains a Nation-al Wildlife Federation-certified wildlife habitat; Tony, whomaintains the native garden; and Jeff, the Professional Em-ployees of Sparrow Hospital (PECSH) president who re-cently made your life safer.

The park is closed for the winter. We will have moreprojects in the spring. Please see Facebook “Save RaynerPark” for updates or contact me at [email protected]

Caterers recommendedI recently hosted a ‘“Turkey Fest” for 40 children and 10

adults. I wanted to have a typical dinner of turkey, mashedpotatoes and gravy, stuffing, baby carrots and choice ofpie. Since I don’t cook, I called my dear friends at Ellie’sCountry Kitchen.” Brian Stiffler at the right time and placedelivered all of the above in cookers so everything waskept warm. The food was abundant and absolutely de-licious. Thank you, Brian and Ellie’s. Might I suggest ifanyone would like an affair catered, call Brian. It’s very af-fordable, and I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Mason police report

Between Nov. 16-22, police investigated55 reported incidents involving a varietyof activities. These are some of those inci-dents.

Some screamNov. 16: Officers responded to a Mason

residence after receiving a dispatched re-port from the complainant that during atelephone conversation, the complainantcould hear a woman screaming on the oth-er end and a male telling her everything wasall right there. Officers found the couple in-side the home, and interviews determinedthe suspect and the victim were both talk-ing to the complainant by phone when thesuspect became frustrated because the vic-tim refused to talk any more and reachedout, pushing the victim against the wall.

The complainant reported the screamsounded like that made when someone washurt. An audio recording made by the com-plainant substantiated the caller’s reasonfor concern. A neighbor, working outside, also reported hearing screaming comingfrom inside the residence. The suspect wasarrested and taken to the Ingham CountyJail and lodged. The Ingham County Prose-cutor’s Office issued a warrant charging thesuspect with domestic assault and battery.

Long drive for nothing?Nov. 16: An officer was dispatched to

Bond Skate Park for three trespassers skat-ing inside the park. The park is closed forthe season, clearly posted as such, with allaccess ways secured. The officers found thesuspects’ car parked in front of the “closedfor season” sign and contacted the trio, whohad to climb the fence to exit the park. Allthree acknowledged knowing the park wasclosed for the season but not having beenaware of this nor finding out until they haddriven all the way from Howell. They re-ported they decided to skate anyway aftersuch a long drive. They were sent on theirway with a citation each for violation of citypark rules.

Driver-text failNov. 17: While patrolling near the down-

town, an officer stopped a car for numeroustraffic offenses and discovered the driverwas texting while driving. The officer alsonoted the distinct odor of marijuana, whichled to further investigation. Although nodrugs were located, the officer did find ablack air soft replica pistol, a set of hand-cuffs, a collapsible baton, a folding knifeand a dark blue uniform jacket — samestyle issued to police and security person-nel. The driver was released from the scenewith a citation for the traffic offense anddriving while texting, and the baton wasseized. It turned out the collapsible batonwas stolen from a residence in Lansing, butthe owner will not prosecute.

Suspicions warrantedNov. 18: While patrolling South Jeffer-

son near South Street, an officer noticeda car with an equipment violation whose

driver appeared to be doing what she couldto avoid the officer following her. After hisattention and suspicions were aroused, theofficer obtained information that the ve-hicle’s owner had a suspended driver’s li-cense and was wanted on two contemptcharges, both originating from driving whilesuspended charges.

The driver was contacted and admittedto “freaking out” upon seeing the officerand having knowledge of the suspensionand warrants. She was arrested and takento the Ingham County Jail, where she waslodged for the two warrants and a newcharge of driving while license suspended. The car was turned over to a family mem-ber who was called to pick it up.

Got pot?Nov. 19: Officers were called to a Mason

home regarding a property dispute. Theresident would not relinquish the propertybelonging to a former friend because shedidn’t want to allow the other back into herresidence. It was at first thought the dis-pute was resolved with the first call, but theresident kept calling back about repeatedphone calls by the suspect who she claimedwas threatening her.

Officers went to the place the suspectwas staying and soon found it was the homeof a medical marijuana user who was notpresent. The suspect was, however, and hadhelped himself to the medicinal stash. Itwas reported he was hiding in the basementfrom the officers because of this. Once hehad been flushed out of his hiding placeby the residence occupant, he was citedfor marijuana use. The medicinal marijuanauser was warned regarding the law that re-quired her stash be in a locked storage area— not to be shared by anyone. The Pros-ecutor’s Office will be consulted to deter-mine if the medicinal marijuana cardholdershould be charged for violating the act.

Scrap-ing byNov. 20: A suspicious vehicle was report-

ed to be frequenting Brookdale Avenue. Thecomplainant stated he keeps seeing an oc-cupied blue mini-van parked on the streetin his neighborhood early in the morning.Whenever another vehicle drives by, themini-van leaves, which seems suspicious. He described the vehicle as having a bro-ken-out rear window that was covered overwith plastic. The complainant provided aregistration plate, and the vehicle owner,a Lansing resident, was located. The vehi-cle owner admitted to coming into Mason, hunting scrap metal to supplement her in-come and help pay the medical costs of herthree children. She said she only picks upwhat she finds put out for garbage. She alsoapologized and said she would cease doingwhat she was if it was illegal. She was toldthat no evidence was present to indicatea crime. The complainant was apprised ofthe officer’s findings.

Ironing out disputeNov. 21: An officer was dispatched to a

residential facility on Kerns Road where astaff member reported being assaulted by a17-year-old resident. The victim stated thesuspect was playing loud music and refusedto turn it down. When the victim went toturn the music down herself, the suspectbegan yelling and pushed her. She fell back-wards, almost on top of a baby sitting onthe floor. The victim stated the suspectthen threatened her with a curling iron andshe wanted the suspect arrested. The as-sault was corroborated by a nearby wit-ness. The suspect was arrested for assaultand taken to the Ingham County Jail, whereshe was lodged. A warrant for assault andbattery was issued the following day by theIngham County prosecutor.

Assault warrants issuedNov. 21: An officer was dispatched to a

disturbance in the hallway of a Mason areaapartment house. The caller reported a loudargument and fighting between a male andfemale and blood sprayed about. The officerfound blood spatters and smears through-out the hallway, indicating someone wasprobably seriously injured.

When the officer approached the apart-ment door, he noticed the blood-covereddoor knob turning and called out for thedoor to be opened. When no response wasforthcoming and it was obvious someoneinside was badly hurt, the officer tried toenter but soon found the door barricaded

from the inside — it was later found thattwo sofas had been stacked, leaning againstthe door. Having had prior experience withthe suspect, the officer decided to call forhelp and place himself in a position to ob-serve both apartment entrances, since thesuspect had run out the back door during aprior incident, thus eluding the officer.

The officer called for assistance, andfour Ingham County deputies responded.Contact was finally made with the suspect, who claimed his wife and baby were insidewith him and he would only surrender ifshot. Neighboring apartments were evacu-ated before the officer and deputies gainedaccess by forcing the door open enough toallow a tight fit through.

They were then confronted with an ex-cited male suspect who was covered withblood and standing with the dining roomtable over his head, which he was aboutto hurl. The officer subdued the suspect byapplying an electro muscular devise (Tas-er), causing the suspect to fall to the floorwhere he was immediately handcuffed. Fur-ther investigation found the man and hiswife had been involved in an argument overhis being at a neighbor’s watching sportsand not at home with the family. Althoughhe first claimed his wife stabbed him, thesuspect recanted, stating she pushed him

through a window and he cut both arms, which was the origin of all the blood mark-ings and trail.

The suspect was left at a medical facil-ity to be treated for injuries. It was discov-ered from family members that the victimhad fled the home with the baby prior to thepolice arriving.

She was safe, but the deputy interview-ing her found evidence she had been as-saulted by the suspect.

The Ingham County prosecutor issueda two-count warrant charging the suspectwith resisting and obstructing Police anddomestic assault-second.

Multi-talented ‘friend’Nov. 22: A Mason resident reported a

friend had broken into his apartment. Heclaimed the friend was able to shrink him-self at will and slip under the door to gainentry — and that the friend could alsomake himself invisible. The officers foundno evidence to substantiate the claimsand had medical personnel come to give thecomplainant a medical evaluation. The com-plainant was cooperative, but declined go-ing to the hospital for assistance. Throughquestioning, it was determined the man wasnot a danger to himself or others so he wasrequested to go inside his residence.

Roberta Jean HensleyMason

Formerly of StockbridgeAge 76, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at her

home. She was born July 2, 1934 in Stockbridge, the daughterof Merle and Merna (Bush) Schroeder. Roberta was a grand-ma to everyone. She was a member of the Eastern Star andshe loved flowers, windchimes and reading. She is survived by six children, Jerry (Luanne) Hensley ofWaterford, Mary Clark of Holt, Merlene (Bill) Snider of Ma-son, Bob (Debbie) Hensley of Grand Ledge, Paul Hensley ofMason and Karen (Don) Toddy of Mason; 13 grandchildren;16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe (Delores) Schroederof Stockbridge; her niece Christy Schroeder of Florida; andfour great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in deathby her granddaughter, Jennifer Clark, and her brother, Rob-ert Schroeder.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 19, 2010 at11:00 a.m. from the Caskey-Mitchell Funeral Home, Stock-bridge with Pastor Brian Johnson officiating. Burial will fol-low at Oaklawn Cemetery, Stockbridge.

Two hours later, anotherofficer was dispatched tothe residence after the samecomplainant claimed therewere two people outsidemaking threats and he wasafraid to leave his homebecause of them. The offi-cer found no one outside, nor would the complainantanswer the door. Dispatchtried a call back, which alsowent unanswered. The res-idence was found secure, with no signs of suspiciousactivity.

B&E, part twoNov. 22: Officers were

called to the area near Syc-amore and Rogers for a dis-orderly person in the street, carrying a trash can, yellingat an unseen second per-son. Officers found the sameman from the earlier break-ing-and-entering report, thistime complaining of beingbeaten up and stabbed re-peatedly with needles. Whiletalking with officers, the manat one point yelled “ouch!”

and his knee buckled, atwhich time he asked if theofficers had seen him getstabbed yet again. This dis-play convinced the officersthe man qualified for an eval-uation, so he was transport-ed to an area medical facilitywhere he was turned over.
