  • OBJECTIVESTo ensure Mouwasat Hospital employees are aware of the standards and safe practices to be followed when using Plum A care infusion Pump and Terumo Syringe Pump.

  • Procedure for Plum CarePPG NUR 95Infusion PumpIs a device used for the controlled administration of intravenous fluids with accuracy and sterility.

  • Policy

The life care infusion pump must be used for all critical caredrugs which needs accurate delivery of medicine. All drugs which are incorporated in IVF needs controlled administration. The life care 5000 must be used to transfuse blood or plasma.

  • SYRINGE PUMPPOLICY: PPG NUR 94This policy and procedure guide and describes the procedure of intravenous infusion or antibiotic administration by using different types of infusion pump in Mouwasat Hospital.

DEFINITION:Device used to administer medications or IV fluids slowly and accurately over a desired length of time by using a syringe.

  • POLICYNeeds written order to use syringe pump. The medications and in fluids which needs to be given via syringe pump to be given as per guidelines to the medication.

TYPES OF SYRINGE PUMP:TERUMO Syringe PumpASENA Syringe PumpVICKERS Syringe PumpATOM Syringe Pump

  • TERUMO SYRINGE PUMP

LOADING A SYRINGE: Use appropriate syringe.Aseptic technique is strict while attaching the IV line to the syringe.TERUMO recommend LUER-LOCK connectorIf the flange of the syringe is not properly engaged in the slit, flow rate accuracy and alarm functions cannot be guaranteed. If the plunger is not firmly held against the slider siphoning or reverse flow may occur.

  • PRIMING

Press and hold the purge switch until the solution drips from the tip of the IV needle. To clear the volume delivered, press the switch for 1.5 seconds. Short buzzer sound and the volume delivered are clear to 0.0Connecting the IV line of the patient, and check the setting of the flow rate and the start the infusion by pressing the START button. If you need to change the flow rate during infusion, press STOP switch and change the settings.

  • SETTING THE FLOW RATECheck the indicator rate is on; if it is off turn the switch to turn it on.Enter the desired flow rate by using dial method. The flow rate cannot be set while the pump is infusing. The maximum flow rate is 999.9 and the minimum rate is .1 ml.

  • COMPLETING THE INFUSIONPress the STOP switch to stop the operation.Close the IV line.Remove the syringe. Turn the power OFF.

  • CLEANING AND STORAGEPower off and disconnect power cord.Clean the machine with appropriate chemical as per the operation manual.-chlorhexidine gluconate The syringe pump cannot be autoclaved and use any dryer or similar device to dry it.Avoid water spills.Never store in hot or humid place.

  • ALARMS AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS

ALARMS/ CAUSES CORRECTIVE ACTIONSyringe disengagement during infusion syringe size 1Press the STOP switch to the buzzer.Close the IV line.Prime the IV line.Open the IV line.Press the START switch to restart infusion. The plunger/ clutch is disengaged during infusionSilence the buzzer by pressing STOP switchClose the IV line.Load the TERUMO brand properly. Reset the syringe and verify the plunger is held firmly against the slider.Prime the IV line.Open the IV line.Press the START switch to restart infusion.

  • ALARMS AND CORRECTIVE ACTIONS

The line is occludedPress the STOP switch to the buzzer.Check for a kinked or clogged tubing.Prime the line and make sure the plunger is held firmly against the slider.Eliminate the cause of occlusion. Then restart the infusion.Battery is running lowPlug the pump into the AC or DC main as soon as possible.Cannot startCheck the flow rate if it is 0.0 ml/uReset the flow rate (less than 300 ml/u)Reset delivery limit.Nearly empty or the syringe is emptyMake silence the buzzer.Replace the syringe to continue the infusion.
