    Introduction

    Infrared Thermographic image is an excellent condition monitoring tool to assist in

    the reduction of maintenance costs on the electrical system and mechanical equipment and

    detect developing problems. The technique allows for the monitoring of temperatures and

    thermal patterns while the electrical system and mechanical equipment are online and

    operating under full load. Unlike many other test methods, Infrared Thermal Imaging can beused on a wide variety of electric components and mechanical equipment. It has been

    proven time after time to readily identify reliability and safety concerns, and to provide

    excellent short-term. For example, early detection of a single fault in a large transformer can

    easily save over one million dollars in maintenance costs.

    What is infrared?

    Infrared energy is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and behaves similarly to

    visible light. It travels through space at the speed of light and can be reflected, refracted,

    absorbed, and emitted. Has a wavelength longer than that of visible light. Infrared is usually

    divided into 3 spectral regions: near, mid and far-infrared.

    Where does infrared energy come from?

    All objects emit thermal energy (heat) during normal operation as a function of their

    temperature. This means all objects emit infrared radiation. Infrared energy is generated by

    the vibration and rotation of atoms and molecules. The higher the temperature of an object,

    the more the motion and hence the more infrared energy is emitted. This is the energy

    detected by infrared cameras which detect thermal radiation only, not temperature. And the

    most important factor that affects radiation emitted form a target is its emissivity. Emissivity

    is the ability of a body to emit radiation. Each material has its own emissivity.

    What is infrared thermography?All objects emit infrared radiation in the form of electromagnetic radiation in the

    infrared spectrum which allows Infrared thermal imaging to evaluate their operating

    condition. The hotter the object is, the more intense the infrared radiation emitted. This

    radiation is, however, outside of the human eye range. Infrared thermography is used to

    image and measure to detect this radiation. By detecting areas of abnormal temperature,

    infrared thermography can diagnose problem areas and their severity.

    • Infrared Thermography is the technique for producing an image of invisible infrared light

    emitted by objects due to their thermal condition.

    • An image produced by an infrared camera is called a thermogram or sometimes a

    thermograph.• Thermography allows one to make non-contact measurements of an object’s temperature.

    SKF cameras provide detailed photographs indicating each piece of operating component's

    "heat signature". The amount of temperature rise over the normal operating temperature

    provides a good indicator of the severity of a problem. This thermal profile, correctly

    interpreted, can reveal a great deal regarding the operating condition of the equipment

    being inspected. A probable cause and recommended action then can be suggested for each

    finding.

    Why does infrared thermography work?

    In mechanical and electrical applications, Infrared Thermal Imaging is more useful

    for locating a problem area than for indicating the root cause of the overheating. The heat is

    usually produced within a component that is not visible directly to the camera. That heat

    must conduct up through the material and present itself as a pattern on the surface of the

    object in order for the infrared camera to sense it.

    Most component or processes are designed to eliminate thermal energy under normal

    operation; simply identifying a thermal pattern does not mean a problem has been located.

    Once a normal thermal signature is obtained and understood, any deviation from this

    normal signature will then provide evidence of a suspect problem developing.

    Why infrared thermography surveys are important?

    Infrared Thermal Imaging is an electronic technique that quite literally allows us to

    see thermal energy. Infrared thermographic imaging has been available for many years as a

    troubleshooting tool. With this new capability plant maintenance personnel have recognized

    Infrared Thermal Imaging as one of the most versatile and effective condition monitoringtools available today. Infrared Thermal Imaging enhances a company's ability to predict

    equipment and component failure and plan corrective action before a costly shutdown,

    component damage, or personal injury occurs.

    How infrared thermography is performed?

    Performed on operating equipment and machinery, an infrared survey is a

    nondestructive test that does not interrupt normal business operations. Measurements are

    made:

      While the plant is operating.

     

    Without contacting the target object.

      With the equipment under full load.

      From a safe distance from energized electrical component, rotating equipment or

    equipment in hostile environments.

      Points in the same target, and compare them.

      Real time imaging allows us to do very fast scanning of stationary targets with immediate

    results.

      The real time character of infrared thermography lets us capture very fast moving target.

    After the survey is completed, a report is prepared and can be delivered on-site in either

    electronic format.

    Electrical Inspection

    One of the biggest problems in electrical systems is excessive temperatures. This

    excessive heat from distribution and transmission systems for hot spots can be generated by

    loose connections, damage, load imbalances and other failure mechanisms. Most electrical

    system (such as transformers, Panel Boards, Control Panels, bus bars, transmission lines,

    isolation disconnects, , relays, wiring ,Switchboards, Power Cabling, Cable Terminations,

    Fuse Disconnects and holders) has allowable operating temperature limits that can be used

    as guidelines.

    Order and scope of work 

    As a partnership between Pepsico Company & Industrial Services Center- DATCO, 

    DATCO  submit offer dated 07/09/2015 for Infrared Thermal Imaging Inspection on site.

    Pepsico release a PO no. 4500505075 dated 24/11/2015.

    General Information 

    Description of survey

    The inspection covered the components of the electrical system and the electric

    insulation systems that were under load at the time of survey dated 21/12/2015. All

    components of the electrical systems conform to coding system. The electric insulation

    systems rated by NEMA, UL and IEC standards according to as insulation class or thermal

    classification of each system.

    Coding System

    A code is assigned to each of the discovered faults. The purpose behind such procedure is to

    classify the faults depending on the degree of seriousness of each fault. The more serious

    the fault the more urgent it has to be corrected.
