Weir has been a key player in the nuclear industry for many years, supplying valves to projects around the globe. Following on from its successful bid in 2015 for a contract at Fuqing 5&6 project in China, the company recently secured a landmark contract for the modernization of the SEBIM pressurizer safety valves on the french nuclear fleet. It’s a challenging time to be in the nuclear industry but continuing to invest in high quality products and people is proving to be a successful strategy for Weir Power & Industrial FranceWorking in partnership with our customer is crucial to our joint success and one of the ways we do that is by sharing our engineering expertise through customer personnel training or qualifications process. When you

consider that Weir’s valves will be in use for the life of the nuclear plant – up to 60 years – that commitment to supporting products is indefinite and ensures a strong partnership well into the future. In the case of Weir Power & Industrial France, the business’ relationship with the French electric utility company EDF dates back over 35 years. EDF partner with a confidential pilot operated safety valves company so called SEBIM, supplying French navy ships boilers to ensure high level of safety and reliability since 1969. Mid 80’s the SEBIM Group started expansion on export market (China, South Korea, Republic of South Africa ) on the Framatome reactor design. In the 90’s, using strong technical experience and creative skills, a New Technology was

developed, qualified and implemented in various reactor technology such as VVER, RBMK, CANDU in New construction and safety improve-ment programs after Chernobyl accident. Despite challenging time, the Company remains dedicated to nuclear and were fully operational to support Chinese Group CGN and CNEIC during the nuclear renaissance and ensure the safety of over 39 reactors in China. For the last 20 years, the company launched several product development program as well as ASME section III nuclear standard certification aiming to bring to our customers an advance safety solution in various countries such as France, India, China, USA, … but also on Generation and III and Genera-tion IV reactors such as the Hualong and HTR.

Continued, reliable operation of auxiliary feedwater pumps is vital to nuclear plant safety during a station blackout. The Turbine Water Lubricated (TWL) Pump is a combined centrifugal pump and turbine designed specifically for nuclear safety applications. It requires no external power or additional support systems to provide continued, remote operation during prolonged periods of power outage.Installation at Krško:In commercial operation since January 1983, the Krško nuclear power plant in Slovenia is a major electrical power contrib-

utor to Slovenia and Croatia with an excellent operating record for over 30 years. The recent project to supply a TWL to Krško is significant because it was the first time that the TWL has been used to replace an ageing turbine driven pump for an auxiliary feed system. It was installed in October 2016 and prepared for commissioning. Thanks to the TWL’s integrated design and small installed footprint it took a remarkably short amount of time to install. Because of these features it can be installed relatively easily on an existing site with minimal

disruption. The TWL is an important upgrade to Krško which is a Westinghouse design 2-loop Pressurized Water Reactor generating over 5 billion KWh of electrical energy representing almost 40% of the total electricity produced in Slovenia. The TWL pump assists in ensuring that this source of clean, secure energy continues to be supplied safely.SPXFLOW continues to serve the needs of the global nuclear sector and has already supplied the TWL to many countries including China, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the UK.

Meeting the needs of the modern nuclear industry

As a leading manufacturer of industrial valves for severe applications, Velan is highly involved in research and development of new technologies for nuclear reactors. One of our latest innovation projects was focused on the development of a new generation of measurement tools applicable in the nuclear containment constraint. Velan has developed and successfully qualified OMERUS® (patented design), the tool allowing the measuring of hard faced deposit coating thickness of gate and check valves. The working principle of OMERUS® is based on the back-diffusion of ultrasonic waves on multi-layer coating of the valve. The operator follows the sealing seat area with a specific probe and follows up the different coating layers of the hard deposit in real time projected on a screen. In just few minutes, OMERUS® records the scrolling scan with a high level of accuracy. The result analysis is made upon the information edited on the automatic printable report. Thanks to the small size of the tool, the operator can

easily use it in the congested location of the reactor building reducing that way the time of his presence and his dosimetry in the contaminated area.Velan offers also a new trans-portable leak test bench for valves called METEOR®. METEOR® is a conditional maintenance tool allowing a leak-tightness testing in flexible wedge gate valves and parallel slide gate valves. The measurement operation can be easily performed in the reactor building and does not require the disassembling of plumbing equipment. The principle of use relies on instantaneous averaged measurement of the leak flow-rate. After the automatic venting and filling, the operator is able to analyze the quantifica-tion of the volume injected into the circuit with a high level of accuracy. Both of these new products complete a large range of maintenance tools specifically designed by Velan to insure a safe and efficient on-site operations of valves in the nuclear reactor conditions.

Special issue WNE 2018 - Paris Nord Villepinte - France Exhibitors

A safety valve is a device designed to protect equipment under pressure from exposure to overpressure, i.e. in excess of the maximum admissible. It is covered by the EU Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/CE. A saftey valve operates only in the event of emergency. The safety valve is designed to open only in the presence of an essentially non-recurrent condition. if forced to open, it should prompt inspection of the system it protects, in order to identify the causes of its opening. Pressure regulating valves are not subject to the same regula-tions as safety valves. Their

purpose is to ensure stability and control of valve inlet pressure. Unlike the safety valve, Pressure Regulators are designed for repeated, even cyclical operation, and therefore to withstand fatigue. Their construction must optimize their performance over time and resist the wearing, scouring or similar conditions that affect fitness for purpose. Indirect action technology from Etna-Industrie (also mentioned as proportional valves) enables to use the same product as safety-valves or regulators. It is necessary to specify the final use of the product at the time of order.

Etna-Industrie is the fluid regulation specialist at your service and will be happy to welcome you at our booth.
