What is the purpose of Kinsman
Farm?
Remove barriers for new and beginning farmers to develop new
agriculture enterprises
Provide hands-on training and demonstrate innovative production
models and techniques
Foster a strong network of sustainable urban farm businesses
Revitalize a large tract of vacant land in the Kinsman Neighborhood
as a part of the Urban Agriculture Innovation Zone
Develop new models that support urban agriculture

What resources will be available
at Kinsman Farm? ¼ acre farm plots for lease – Land $250 year
(1st lease agreement for 1 year)
Option to renew annually
Farm Preparation
Farms were cleared of debris and
obstructions.
Soil will be amended prior to receiving your
plot. A tiller will be available to further prep
individual sites.
Fencing
Entire farm was fenced (individual plot is not
fenced)
Water access
Fees based on agreements was established.
Frost free yard hydrant
Water fees will incur
based upon City of
Cleveland Dept. of Water
rates and policies.

Tiller and general garden/lawn equipment will be
available for use.
Hand tools and other tools must be provided by
farmers.
Limited Storage (10 sq. ft. of indoor storage)

What will be expected of Kinsman Farmers?
Responsible use of resources: water, land, tools, equipment.
Growing produce for market.
Using healthy growing methods.
Sustainable practices are required. Pesticide and fertilizer applications need to follow BMP.
Being courteous, cooperative and neighborly
This farm is a community effort, the farmers ARE that community.

What will be expected of Kinsman Farmers?
Lease agreement
Fees to be established based on costs and
national models.
Adherence to all rules and guidelines of the Farm.
Keeping a tidy plot
Maintaining crop growth and health
Keeping weed growth and non-production
area growth in check.
Working cooperatively with fellow farmers.
Participating in cooperative opportunities.

Leasing
All leases will be directly through the West Creek
Preservation Committee and the farmer.
You will sign a one year lease with option to renew for
three years.
There are fees associated with the farm, including:
Land access (required)
Water usage (required)
Tool/Equipment Rental (optional)

Required reporting
Demographic information of the farmer
Economic Output of your farm -- All sales in dollar
amount, gross income, expenses.
Production from the farm - Includes types and quantity
(in pounds, or reasonable measurement)
In addition to the above reporting, we will be surveying
farmers on production knowledge, farming methods
and business methods.

KF Application Process
Eligibility:
At least one of the partners listed on this application
must have completed the Ohio State University
Extension Market Gardener Training Program (MGTP)
prior to application or is currently enrolled in the class.
A completed farm business plan must be submitted
along with the application
Applicant is a beginning farmer or rancher (a person
that has not operated a farm or ranch; or has operated
a farm or ranch for not more than 10 years)
Applicants must participate in program events,
evaluation, networking opportunities and work in
community hours with fellow new farmers.

A completed farm business plan must be submitted along with the
application, including:
Executive Summary (1 page)
Mission of Your Enterprise (1 page)
Ownership of Your Enterprise (1-2 pages)
Partners (individuals involved, youth, community members,
organizations, etc.) (1 -3 pages)
Scope of Products & Services (1-2 pages)
Analysis of Markets (3-5 pages)
Management Plan (1-2 pages)
Financial Plan (1-3 pages)
A ¼ acre site plan (1 pages) 15 page

Application Process/
Acceptance into the Program
Once the application is submitted and the eligibility criteria has
been met, the application will be reviewed by the Land
Committee.
Land Committee, the governing body for the Kinsman Farm:
Ohio State University Extension
The West Creek Preservation Committee
Burten, Bell, Carr Development Corporation
1-2 current farmers from the Kinsman Farm
After initial review, final candidates will be contacted for a formal
presentation & interview for the Land Committee.

1) The Selection Committee will review the application, business plan, and presentation and make the final decision.
If the application is approved, the Selection Committee will assign a plot. Your requests taken into consideration.
2) The West Creek Preservation Committee will prepare contracts and a lease agreement.
It is expect that the farmers will have access to their site before or on May 2014.
