What is referencing?

In academic writing, “referencing” is:• acknowledging a direct source of information

used (e.g. a quotation); or• acknowledging a source of supportive

information used.

Two parts of referencing…

CitationsCitations are “in-text” references, e.g.:

From Thompson, S. (Ed.). 2007. Planning Australia: An overview of urban and regional planning. Melbourne: Cambridge University Press

Shaped by the work of engineers and architects, early planning ideas were chiefly influenced by modernist thought in relation to industrial urbanisation, as technologies that enabled the regulation of building form and location became available (Healy, 1997, pp. 17-18). At this time, planning incorporated utopian notions of city and neighbourhood form and structure.

So what is EndNote?

• EndNote is, firstly, a database manager, specialising in storing, managing and locating bibliographic references in your private reference "library".

• It is also a bibliography-maker which can locate cited works in its databases and build and format appropriate lists automatically.

Advantages of using EndNote

• EndNote comes with over 1,000 pre-defined styles (each appropriate to a particular journal or other publication medium), but it can also "learn" almost any of the thousands of other styles used in less popular publication media.

• You can also build, store and share your own customised styles.
