What Type of Biobased Products Are Available?
Wide variety of biobased products are commercially available
Common biobased feedstocks:– Soy, corn and other vegetable oils– Wheat, straw, rice, potato starch– Citrus
3
Lubricants
Use of vegetable oils to replace petroleum base stock oils in lubricant applications
Current Applications
Performance/Benefits
Hydraulic Fluids Rail & Flange Oils
Two-Cycle Engine Oils Wire Rope Lubricants
Bar/Chain/Penetrating Oils Metal Cutting Fluid
Greases Transformer Fluid
Higher viscosity Higher flash point
Lower evaporative loss Readily biodegradable
Enhanced lubricity
4
Plastics
Natural oils used to replace petroleum (1) to make polyols used in polyurethane and (2) as ingredients in polyester resins. Corn, wheat and other starch/ sugars can be used to make polymers for plastic applications.
Current Applications
Performance/Benefits
Carpet backing and fiber face Food serviceware
Spray foam insulation Clothing
Foam for furnishings Packaging
Molded composites
Reduced VOC/HAP Emissions Improved environmental life cycle
Cure times/energy use Durability/Biodegradability
Strength/weight - Rigid and flexible applications
LEED Credit
5
Solvents
Methyl soyate, ethyl lactate, citrus are some of the most common biosolvents used to replace petro-chemical ingredients
Current Applications
Performance/Benefits
Industrial Cleaners/Degreasers Adhesive/Mastic/Graffiti Removers
Parts Cleaners Hand Cleaners
Paint Strippers Janitorial Cleaners
Coating & Ink Removal Deicers
Dwell times Low / negligible VOC emissions
Enhanced solvency Not HAPS/ODCs
Virtually non-toxic High Flash/Boiling Point
6
Coatings, Adhesives, & Other Products
Use of vegetable oils and other biobased ingredients, such as soy flour, to replace petro-chemical ingredients in certain applications and/or applying modified vegetable oil for use in unique applications.
Current Applications
Benefits of Various Applications
Roof and other coatings Wood adhesives & glues
Paints & sealants & fabric coatings Truck bed liners
Soy ink Remediation/spill cleanup
Toner for printers & copiers Asphalt restoration and repair
Low VOC emissions Enhanced performance
LEED & Energy Star Enhanced recycling
Lower petro/toxic chemical use

Who is Using Biobased Products?
Many federal agencies, including DoD, are already using biobased productsDoD examples include: Painter Stripper at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Floor Cleaner at Seymour Johnson AFB, Other Industrial Cleaners at Fort Lewis, Fort Bragg, Pope AFB, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Dover AFB, Insulation at Fort Lewis and Ft. Stewart; Building Panels at Forth Hood, Biobased Bags at Columbus AFB, Transformer Fluid at over 155 Military Facilities, Biowalls at NWIRP in McGregor, TX, and Composite Panels for Military VehiclesMore will do so as the Federal BioPreferred Program (FB4P) is implemented
8
DoD’s Interest in Using Biobased Products
Part of DoD’s Green Procurement Program StrategyAffirmative procurement preference requirement for biobased products contained in the 2002 Farm Bill August 17, 2006 memorandum from Under Secretary of Defense Krieg
“DoD activities are encouraged to purchase and use biobased alternative products and to initiate projects which further demonstrate the value and utility of these materials in DoD applications.”
9
DoD’s Biobased Product Showcase & Educational Event
Held September 12 &13, 2006 on the ConcourseInformation sharing among the biobased product industry and DoD staffRemarks by DEPSEC England, Secretary of Agriculture Johanns, Senators Harkin and Lugar, and Congresswoman Kaptur
