Welcome

Vice-Chancellor's WelcomeComing to University is an exciting and challenging time. It is a time when we meet new people, many of whom will become life long friends; it is also a time of discovery as we begin the next stage in our education. For you, as an international student, the prospect must seem quite daunting as you not only leave your family but you leave your home country to come to Britain and begin your studies at Keele. You can be assured that a warm welcome awaits you on campus. We currently have students from over 90 countries, so you can be assured that there is a real multi-cultural, cosmopolitan feel to the campus.Once on campus you will find that you quickly settle in and I would encourage you to make the most of the University orientation programme thatis designed to help you meet new people, discover what the University and the surrounding area has to offer, as well as ensuring you are equipped to begin your studies with sessions to help you get the most from our library and computing facilities. Within your first few weeks you will also have the opportunity to meet with your course team and your personal tutor or institutional coordinator. As well as the academic support you will get from your Faculty, we also have a very experienced team dedicated to supporting our international student community. They have worked with thousands of students over the years so you can be assured that whatever question or concern you have they will be able to help. Remember that if you have any concerns, no matter how small or simple they may seem, please speak with our International Student Support Team.Professor Nick FoskettVice-Chancellor

IntroductionWelcome to the Accelerated International Foundation Year. In this pack you will find information about the course and also guidance on arranging visas and travelling to the UK. Most of this information can also be found on our website, which contains much more additional advice for you so it is well worth browsing. Further information will be sent to you regarding the timetable for the induction week. The AIFY is an intensive course and so is taught in small numbers in order to ensure you achieve the support you need. You will have support for English Language, either Foundation English or English for Academic Purposes and also study a British Culture module, which should be fun. You will also develop your Learning Skills and Communication Skills in order to help you adapt to studying in a UK university setting. In addition to your chosen academic modules you will also complete a class in Elementary Mathematics. Therefore, by the end of the course it is expected that you will be a well-rounded academic student with a high level of core skills as well as enhanced subject specific knowledge for your chosen degrees. As the course is intensive you will need to be very organised to meet the assignment deadlines and be able to study for your exams. You will have a personal tutor (me!) available to guide you through this process. As well as the Foundation Year Centre there are many support staff available, especially the International Student Support and the Language Learning Unit teams, who are there to offer you help and guidance. Although you will be studying the majority of the course over the summer months, when the campus is quiet as the main student body is away, you will not be the only students present. There are pre-sessional English students on campus, as well as post-graduate students. There will be a number of social and cultural visits arranged over the time of your course in order to help you mix with the other students and experience a little more of the UK. So despite the AIFY being very work-focussed you will have time to enjoy yourself too!For 2014 the start date is Monday 31st March. It is therefore best to plan to arrive and settle in to your accommodation on the weekend before (Saturday 30th - Sunday 31st). If you do plan to arrive early then please let me, or the International Student Support team know and I will try and ensure you have some support arranged.I look forward to meeting you and do hope you will have a positive and rewarding experience as you commence your UK educational experience.Allison GardnerHead of the Accelerated International Foundation Year

FinancePayment of Tuition FeesDetails of your tuition fees will be included with your offer letter. All international students will receive an invoice, once they have arrived at Keele, which will be sent to their Keele email account. If you are responsible for your own fees and wish to pay instalments by Direct Debit, then you will also need to complete and submit a Direct Debit form. The Direct Debit form can be accessed online at: http://www.keele.ac.uk/finance/income/paymentmethods/.You will be required to pay your tuition fees by set dates, details of which are available online at: http://www.keele.ac.uk/finance/income/paymentdates/.Many students will find it most convenient to pay their fees in advance before enrolling at Keele. Details of how you can do this are available online at: http://www.keele.ac.uk/finance/income/paymentmethods/.Please note that all forms of payment must be in British Pounds Stirling - the Euro is not a currency in the UK.Maintenance FundsYou will need to provide evidence showing that you have access to the following amount of money:Course LengthFunds Required

9 months or less800 living costs for each month of your course PLUS the full tuition fee.

More than 9 months (e.g. Bachelor Degrees)7,200 living costs for the year PLUS the first year's tuition fee. You will need an additional 4,050 available to you for the year for each of your dependants.

Preparing your financial evidenceThe new Points Based System for entry to the UK means that you must have sufficient money available to you before you arrive in the UK and that you can access this money. If you do not need a visa to study in the UK then you are still required to have sufficient funds available to cover your tuition fees and living costs. This is a big financial commitment and you must consider this very carefully. You might be eligible to work part time in the UK but it is important that you do not rely on money earned from working as a source of income. You should always plan financially for a situation where you will not be working in the UK as part time work is increasingly difficult to source in the UK.Evidence of FundsThere are very specific rules on which documents will be accepted, and what each document must show in the Tier 4 Policy Guidance, paragraphs 162-194. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/applicationforms/pbsTier4migrantguidance.pdfSome examples of the type of documents you can use to prove that you have these funds available are as follows: A personal bank or building society statement in your name A building society passbook An official letter from your bank An official letter from a regulated financial institution confirming when the funds will be released to you Letter of official financial sponsorship Letter of official government sponsorshipProof of shares, bonds or pensions are NOT acceptable as evidence of available funds. If you have an officialsponsor (not including family)for all or part of your fees you must also enclose a copy of the award letter from your sponsor with the details of the payments they will make. This will reduce the amount of funds you are required to show. Please check with International Student Support if you think you qualify as a sponsored student.Bringing money in to the countryIt is very unsafe to travel with large amounts of cash, so we recommend that you pay your tuition fees online in advance. You MUST NOT bring your tuition fees in cash to the UK.If you currently live outside the EEA or Switzerland, you are required to declare any money you are carrying with you if it is more than 10,000 Euros or equivalent, and this includes bank drafts and travellers cheques.Bank AccountsIt is essential that you open a UK bank account once you have arrived in the UK and enrolled at Keele, but it may take a few weeks before you will be able to use this account. Because of this, we recommend you bring around 300 in cash and a further 300 in travellers cheques to cover your general living expenses for the first few weeks you are in the UK.Keele University has a branch of Santander Bank on campus. For convenience, you may find it beneficial to open an account with Santander if you will be living on campus, however, you should research the benefits and disadvantages of an account with each major UK bank before you decide to open an account so that you can choose a bank that is right for you.International Student Support has produced a booklet entitled 'Opening a UK Bank Account', which will shortly be available to download from here and will also be available to collect from the Student Support and Development Services Reception. We recommend that you consult this booklet before opening an account. To open a bank account in the UK, you will need Passport and visa Your University letter of acceptance that you received at your home residential address (the bank is looking for evidence that the University has corresponded with you at your place of residence) Proof of your term-time address (the StudentRecords and ExamsOffice can provide this on request; students living off campus should take their rental contract) A recent bank statement or credit card statement from your home bank, translated into English and containing your residential address (the statement must be less than three months old)

AccommodationWhether you are living on campus, in Liberty Court or in private, rented accommodation, the Student Accommodation team are here to help you.Full details of the accommodation available and how to apply are on the following website: http://www.keele.ac.uk/studyatkeele/accommodation/internationalstudents/Please note that as you are arriving in April not all room types maybe available. As you will be arriving during the Easter holidays not all students maybe present and many will be revising for exams or completing assignments. At the end of the normal academic year, when the majority of students leave, you will be offered a new room with other summer students so that you have companions living with you. Again this is in order that you do not feel lonely during the quieter times on campus. You are offered a room in our student accommodation for the duration of your studies, providing you apply by the University's deadline each year as a returning student. You will need to make an advance payment of 450 to secure your room before you arrive. This 450 payment is split between a 150 room deposit, which is refundable (less any damages or outstanding debts) when you vacate your room and 300 payable towards the first instalment of your accommodation fees.If you already have a UK bank account and would like to pay by Direct Debit, you should complete the online form and return it to Keele. You can also complete a mandate online through eVision (see Getting Connected. Contact the accommodation office for information regarding deadlines for payment.Details of the room that you have been allocated will be sent to you separately before you arrive. What to bring with you:ClothingThe British climate is unpredictable and very changeable, which means that cold, windy and wet weather can occur at any time of the year. It is rarely hotter than 30 degrees celsius and temperatures drop below 0 degrees celsius during the winter months. Therefore, you will need warm and waterproof clothing for your stay in the UK. If possible you should bring some warm clothing with you, but it may be cheaper and save on luggage space to buy suitable clothes when you get here. The average September temperatures are 15 degrees celsius and in January, depending on the severity of Winter, it is around -5 to +10 degrees and so it can feel cold when you arrive. It is advisable to dress in several thin laters such as a t-shirt, shirt and jumper/sweater/pullover so that you can adjust to the different temperatures inside and outside. You will have to wash your own clothes while you are here (there are launderettes attached to each Hall of Residence on campus), so choose clothes that are easy to keep clean for everyday use as dry cleaning can be expensive in the UK.Dress at the University is generally informal but it is suggested that you bring your national dress, traditional clothes or a smart outfit for some of the formal events.Electrical appliancesThe standard electricity supply in the UK is 220 / 240 volts, 50 cycles AC, and the standard outlet is a 13-amp square 3-pin plug. Each room on University campus is equipped with one 13-amp socket. If you are going to be living in university accommodation, you must ensure that any electrical appliances you bring comply with UK and EU Electrical Safety standards. If youare not bringinga computer, there is an IT Suite on the Ground Floor of the Library which is now open 24 hours a day.

Bed linen and cooking equipmentThere are plenty of shops in Hanley and Newcastle selling items of bed linen. We do not provide cooking equipment but again, there are a number of shops in the area where you can purchase items such as pots, pans, crockery and cutlery. Alternatively, a company called Gailarde produce special bedding and kitchenware packs that can be delivered directly to you, although it can be quite expensive. You can find their products and prices at http://www.easybedpacks.com.You may wish to pack other items such as towels, dish cloths, tea towels, coat hangers, a battery alarm clock, a small backpack or rucksack, a torch or flashlight, a good English dictionary, laundry bag and camera.Medical / Optical prescriptionsIf you are being treated or have an on-going condition such as diabetes, see your doctor before you leave to get photocopies of medical records and prescriptions to give to the University doctor. Make sure you have the full name and address of your family doctor in your home country. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you should also see your optician to get a copy of your prescription. If you wear contact lenses you should get advice from your optician on what solutions to use here. Lenses and solutions can be expensive in the UK although it is now much cheaper to order online. If you want to order contact lenses online, you will have to have an eye examination at an opticians in the UK and then provide this prescription to the online lens supplier.TelevisionBritish TV sets use the PAL system; if you are bringing any DVDs from home, you need to check whether they can be played or whether you need a multi-region player. If you wantwatch liveTV in your study bedroom you must buy a license for this by law. You will need to buy this license to watch TV in the UK as the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is sponsored only by this income.Photos, posters and "things from home"Don't forget to bring things that will brighten up your room and remind you of home. You'll also have plenty of new photos to add as your first year goes by!DO NOT BRINGFoodThe local markets and shopping areas of Stoke-on-Trent sell many different foods from around the world, so you do not need to bring this with you. If you want to bring certain items of food with you then please look at the Customs section of this website, as there are many products that you cannot bring into the UK.

Electrical itemsThe University accommodation provides a kettle, toaster and a microwave in most halls, so you will not need to bring these with you. Please DO NOT bring any electrical item with you that is not specifically designed for use in the UK, for example rice cookers. This is a fire hazard and any item that does not meet the requirements or is not Portable Appliance Tested will be confiscated. UK rice cookers can easily be purchased from the local Chinese supermarket and importer. Please note: mini fridges and heaters are NOT allowed in University accommodation.Books and study materialsIf you buy textbooks at home they will take up a lot of your luggage allowance. We recommend you borrow texts from the library or you can buy them from the Students' Union second-hand book sales. There is a Waterstones bookshop on campus.

You should obtain travel insurance before departure. You should insure your personal property against loss or theft as soon as possible after arriving. There are many companies that offer personal insurance, and some of them are specifically for international students.
