    Information Literacy Lessons Orientation

    Please sign-up for a time to bring your class to the media center for orientation.o Photostory with puppet character for primary gradeso Photostory with photos involving actual students for intermediate gradeso Media Specialist Instruction and student hands-on activitieso Check-out procedures

    Read-aloudsRead-alouds can be scheduled for all grade-levels. The average read-aloud activity willtake 15-20 minutes. Students are encouraged to check-out books after the read-aloudactivity. Read-alouds must be scheduled, but can be scheduled on a weekly re-occurring

    basis. NOTE: Please indicate if there is a particular topic you have in mind whenscheduling read-alouds to allow the MS adequate time to find a relevant book thatcorrelates with your curriculum goals.

    o Picture books - grades K-5o Chapter books - grades 3-5o Read from a variety of genres - include award winning books (Caldecott, Georgia

    Picture Book and Georgia Book Awards, Newbery, etc.)o Discuss story elements (main idea, sequence, cause and effect, character,

    setting)o Discuss parts of the book (cover, spine, title page, copyright, dedication, table of

    contents, glossary, index, appendix, bibliography)

    Locating information in the media centero Kindergarten - E book section and non-fiction sectionso 1st grade Discuss fiction and non-fiction and how to locate books using the

    authors last name (fiction section) and the call number (non-fiction)o 2nd grade Discuss fiction and non-fiction plus Dewey Decimal call number

    arrangement ; Using Follett OPACo 3rd to 5 th grades Locate a book using Follett OPAC; Locate books in the fiction

    section using alphabetical arrangement; Locate books in the non-fiction sectionusing Dewey Decimal; Locate reference materials

    Research (generally 4 and 5 th grades)As with all information literacy skills, research skills are best taught in the context of curriculum content. Please collaborate with the media specialist to discuss curriculumneeds with regard to research. The media specialist will be more than happy tocustomize each research lesson to better meet the individual curriculum plans you arecreating. Most lessons will take one or more full class periods.

    o Locate print information in the media center including locating information inreference materials

    o Locate information in databases (ex. Galileo) stored on the Internet

    o Finding credible Internet sources for research projectso Copyright Lawo Note-taking and paraphrasingo Plagiarism and citing sourceso Cross-referencing

    Technology and Web 2.0 Tools When applicable, technology will be incorporated into teacher/media specialistcollaborated lesson plans. For students to excel in the 21 st century, they must be able toincorporate technology into all aspects of their lives.
