MISSION GOD IS CALLING US TO

GOD IS CALLING US TO

Reach out to the world around us and share the everlasting love of Jesus Christ!

VISION

A Spirited (Acts 2), Growing (Matthew 28) and Christ–centered (John 13) community filled with hope!

CORE VALUES1. Jesus is life. The rest is details.

Jesus Christ alone is our hope, and the only real and lasting hope for the world (John 14:6). We love him. For this reason, we don’t apologize for the gospel or for putting our relationship with him first in our lives (Romans 1:16). We strive to respond faithfully to the call of Jesus to follow him above all else in this world, which so often competes for our time, energy and attention (Luke 14:15–24).

2. Lost people matter to God and

so they matter to us. Jesus was sent to reconcile a lost world to

God (Luke 15:1–32), and he calls us to do the same. We like unchurched people, and we know what a difference Jesus can make in their lives. For this reason, we seek to reach out to the world around us and share the everlasting love of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19–20, John 20:21, 1 Corinthians 9:19–27, Lutheran Church of Hope mission statement).

3. We worship God, not tradition.

Where tradition helps to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ and further the mission of our church, we embrace it. Where tradition becomes a wall between God and his people, we seek to tear it down (John 2:13–22, Matthew 23:13–36, John 9:1–41). While the gospel message of Jesus Christ remains unchanged (Hebrews 13:8), the manner in which it is proclaimed must change for it to be communicated effectively in a changing world (Mark 2:21–22). In our worship and in our ministry, we intentionally offer a wide variety of options from traditional to contemporary and we remain open to new waves of innovation sent to the church by the Holy Spirit of God – all for the sake of Christian mission (Psalm 146–150, Acts 2:1–42)

4. Following Jesus is a growing experience.

We can’t outgrow Christian faith. As modern day disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to move from spiritual infancy to spiritual maturity (Philippians 3:13–14, Ephesians 4:12–14). For this reason, we strive to bring people into an ever–growing relationship with Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19). This growth best happens in small groups (Acts 2:42–47). As we grow in faith, we turn our hearts to God, giving of ourselves and our resources – freely and cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7).

5. We are one body, united in

Jesus Christ. We are a church of individuals, different in

many ways, yet called together by God to be one in ministry and mission. As members of the same body, we become more effective when we work in harmony as a unified whole (John 17:20–23). Among us, love for one another is the norm (John 13:34, Romans 13:8), conflicts are resolved according to the teaching of Jesus (Matthew 18:15–17), and we seek to build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11). We rejoice together, and we suffer together (1 Corinthians 12:25–27).

DES MOINES STAFF

THANK YOU FOR PICKING UP THIS BOOKLET. Welcome to Hope! We don't think it's any accident you've picked up this visitor guide for Hope’s Des Moines campus! In fact, we've been praying for you! This guide will help give you a quick taste of who we are as a church, what we're about and places you can get plugged in.

In short, we are one church in multiple locations. We are a church with a crystal-clear mission from God: to reach out to the world around us and share the everlasting love of Jesus Christ! That mission is at the heart of everything we do and everything we offer at all six of our greater Des Moines area campuses.

If you’re looking for a perfect church, this definitely isn’t it! However, if you’re looking for a place to belong, to make an impact through service and, most importantly, to grow in your relationship with Jesus, there’s a place for you here!

So, look around, and if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to myself or any one of our incredible staff. Welcome to Hope – we're glad you're here!

How do I get the full details on classes? Do I needto register?Descriptions of all opportunities are available at hopedesmoines.org/calendar. Please take a few minutes to register for the classes that you plan to attend. By doing so, you help our teams adequately prepare so we can provide you with appropriate materials, accommodations and childcare.

Can I take classes or go to programs at a Hope location I don’t normally attend for worship? Yes. The leadership team hopes you will make yourself at home at the campuses in West Des Moines, Ankeny, Ames, Des Moines, Grimes and Waukee to take full advantage of what’s offered at all six campuses.

Is childcare available?Childcare is offered at all worship services (infants – age 3) and for many classes and events (infants – age 12). Please check the individual class pages online to find the details. To ensure the safety and well-being of the children in Hope’s care, we take great care to staff the nursery appropriately. When registering, please indicate the names and ages of your children needing care. Walk-ins will be warmly welcomed as space allows.

When is the nursery open?Childcare for infants – age 3 is offered at all worship services and for many classes and events. The nursery opens 15 minutes prior to the start of events and worship.

Is there a way to hear last week’s sermon? I was out of town and missed it.Yes! Visit hopedesmoines.org/sermons for a podcast, or watch messages from Hope West Des Moines' previous weekend’s services at hopeonline.tv.

How do I reach a pastor in an emergency? The after-hours number for emergencies is (515) 875-5300. Your call will be answered by a contracted answering service. Your information will be relayed to Hope’s Care Ministry for responses. This number is for urgent care needs. During business hours, Tuesdays, 1:00-4:00 pm and Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm, call Hope at (515) 282-4481 for emergencies.

ADULT MINISTRYLIFE GROUPS“We’re better together!” We tend to say that a lot around here. And, we say it because it’s true. The purpose of Hope’s Life Groups is to bring people together in growing, Christ-centered relationships. Life Groups are small groups of Christ-followers who meet regularly to grow relationships, study God’s Word, and serve the world around them. If you are interested in joining a Life Group, visit hopedesmoines.org/connect

PRAYER [email protected]

It’s God’s desire that we "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Through prayer, God connects to us and then we connect to each other. The Prayer Ministry supports Hope’s mission to “reach out to the world around us and share the everlasting love of Jesus Christ” through various forms of prayer. In addition to the below opportunities, a weekly Prayer Bulletin is also available, consisting of prayers submitted by members of our Hope family. Weekend Prayer: Trained prayer partners are available after every weekend worship service inside the Worship Center

under the video screens to the left and right of the stage. To join this team, visit hopedesmoines.org/prayer. Let Prayer Change your Life: A step-by-step approach for creating or enhancing daily one-on one time with God. This

course provides structure to daily devotions, prayers, sermon notes, Bible study and more so the time you spend with God is meaningful, inspiring and ultimately life-changing.

School for Listening Prayer: Many people experience prayer to be a one-way street, kind of like talking to a brick wall. But the Bible says prayer is dynamic a two-way conversation with God where lives are transformed. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll discover together the many ways God speaks to us and how to respond to what we hear.

CREATIVE ARTS [email protected]

Our Creative Arts Ministry offers Christ-centered experiences to express your faith and engage hearts and minds through the arts. Activities for all ages and ability levels encourage creative expression as a means to glorify God, strengthen faith in Christ Jesus and be led by the Holy Spirit.

Ongoing classes & events throughout the year: Live Art: Throughout the year, we invite gifted members of our congregation to paint or draw as the Spirit leads during the

service. For more information or to donate your talent, email [email protected]. Creative Team: This is a dynamic group of artists, painters, photographers, videographers, designers, builders, dreamers and

visionaries who seek to further the Kingdom by using their creative gifts. Be a part of designing stage sets for worship; live painting for worship or events; planning art outreach events; and telling stories of Hope members through video, pictures and story.

Open Art Studio: Enjoy an evening of creating in fellowship with others (ages high school and up). Bring your own supplies or use those available for a supply fee of $5.

ONLINE GIVINGWhat does the Bible really say about money? Actually, quite a bit, which is why we can’t ignore the subject. When it comes to giving, we try not to overcomplicate it. Why? Because it’s not complicated – it’s a matter of faith! God’s revelation and not human reason. If you consider Hope your church home, then please pray, listen and give according to what God lays on your heart.
