On behalf of theacademic communityof our university Iinvite you to join meon a short and denseintellectual itinerary.By the end of this“journey” you willdiscover a part of ourcountry’s culture, which reverberates

both traditions and present European achievements, and focuseson the genesis and evolution of the easternmost modernHumboldtian academic institution. Founded in a time of scientificeffervescence and emulation of great European ideas, AlexandruIoan Cuza University of Iaşi has been a bridge between the secularvalues of the civilized Western society and the spiritual beliefsshared by the local people. Our university has gradually turnedinto a forum of free ideas, a unity of education in the spirit of thatwhich is true, good and beautiful, as well as an emblematicallandmark of this region. Free from the constraints of thetotalitarian system, in the past two decades, our academiccommunity has been rebuilding the formative vocation ofcharacters, with determination in the creative transmission ofquality knowledge and respect for the world’s miraculous diversity.

Today, with its fifteen faculties, Alexandru Ioan Cuza Universityoffers to all inquisitive young minds a large diversity of academicprograms whichare aimed to open the way towards their personal fulfillment andsocial recognition. In a world characterized by rapid and profoundchanges, where knowledge is the most valuable asset, AlexandruIoan Cuza University aims to strengthen the flexibility of learning,to create opportunities for the intellectual and professionaldevelopment of its students, to assist quality research and tocontribute to the society’s cultural and economic growth.Due to its performances, our university has signed partnershipswith more than 200 prestigious academic institutions throughoutthe world and has actively promoted the development of theEuropean Higher Education Area. Travelling abroad is a relevant partof education; more so if the visit isacademic. The Erasmus Programme providesexcellent educational opportunitiesfor all students. Our university sent and receivedthe first Erasmus (Socrates, by thattime) students and teaching staff in1998. Over these 14 years, more

than 4,500 outgoing students and almost 900 incoming studentsturned Erasmus at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University into an ongoingsuccess story. All the meetings we have with the outgoingstudents just before their leave and then with the incomingstudents of that year are rewarding through the refreshingdiscussions with very good, highly motivated students. Many ofour best students become Erasmus students and consequentlyleave us for one or two semesters. Each of them visits one of our300 partner institutions. Some of them are enrolled in jointdegrees with our partner universities. All outgoing studentsreturn not only more advanced in their studies, but also moreconfident in themselves. Furthermore, they increase, year afteryear, the trust and willingness to cooperate between ouruniversity and our partners.

The Erasmus team and the other student services do their best tomake our incoming students feel that Alexandru Ioan CuzaUniversity is their home away from home. The fact that so manyincoming students came for one semester and then asked for asecond semester here is their touching way of saying that ourwork reached its goals. Upon their return, they are the mostcredible ambassadors of our university, of the city of Iasi.

Our university expands the scope of its Erasmus - like exchangesby coordinating 3 Erasmus Mundus projects which join together35 universities from the EU and seven neighbor countries inEurope and Asia.Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is ranked 67 in Europe by thenumber of outgoing Erasmus students. Such a standing is theresult of a university-wide work - teaching staff andadministrative staff supporting mobile students before, duringand after their visit abroad.Whether we say it at the beginning of your Erasmus visits (that is,you are incoming students) or after its completion – welcome toAlexandru Ioan Cuza University!

“…Forever the traveler and the wanderer, I always found Iaşi to be a restful place tostop by (…). I remember its cheerfulness as being entirely intellectual, presided overby the icon of my literary friends, gathered in debates and readings (…). A day spentin Iasi was for me a discreet and finely nuanced celebration. In Iasi I felt closer thanelsewhere to the ideal place where everyone would like to spend their life. Therewas, in this royal city, enveloped in the melancholy of unbearably grand memories, more wit and more worship of all things intellectual than in any other Romaniancentre…”

THE METROPOLITAN CATHEDRALBd. Ștefan cel Mare Și Sfânt nr. 46, Iași

The Metropolitan Cathedral of Iași, the largest in the country, was builtbetween 1833-1839.The present shape of the building is due to King Carol I ofHohenzollern who, in 1881 (the year when Romania became akingdom), decided to have the cathedral rebuilt after the fall of its hugecupola. Both inside and outside, the building is richly decorated in theBaroque style. In 1888, after the fire at the Trei Ierarhi Church, the precious relics ofSaint Parascheva were brought into the new cathedral. TREI IERARHI MONASTERYBd. Ștefan cel Mare Și Sfânt nr. 62, Iași

This church owes its fame to the extraordinary stone embroidery thatdecorates its exterior walls. There are over 30 styles of decorativepatterns and they are all unrepeatable. The occidental architectural styles (Gothic, Renaissance) combine withoriental ones (of Armenian, Georgian, Persian, Arab, and Ottomaninspiration), in a very daring conception, whose result is however avery harmonious creation. The church has the shape and the look of acasket for relics, specially conceived to house the relics of SaintParascheva (1641).The church was built between 1633-1642 and restored between 1884-1904.
